News April 2010 Eng:Layout 1 5/11/10 2:04 PM Page 30 Petroleum Institute News The PI receives Dr. Ove Hoegh-Guldberg to speak about Climate impact on Coral Reefs In line with the Petroleum Institute’s vision and commitment toward more academic and economic awareness about global warming and environment preservation among its students and as part of its series Leaders In Engineering And Applied Sciences Seminars, the PI hosted a speech under the theme ‘Climate Change and Coral Reefs: The Increasing Importance of Marine Resource Management’ delivered by Dr. Ove Hoegh-Gulderberg, Professor in Marine Studies and Director of the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia April 6. Dr. Hoegh-Gulderberg highlighted the crucial importance of oceans to world cultures. “This is where Abu Dhabi and Australia share great similarities through coastal people,” he said. [And] we are disturbing the coastlines and changing the very way these coasts have been for centuries and bringing physical and chemical abuses to the nature of the ocean due to climate change.” “In flaring and green house gases, despite our expansion, we as SPC and ADNOC are so proud to inform that we had reduced more than 74% of carbon flaring [emissions] from 1995 to 2009 in all our sectors; chemical, marketing, processing, protection, refining, exploration and production,” said Engineer Lubna Omar Al Ameri, Environmental Advisor at the Environment Health & Safety Division of the Supreme Petroleum Council, in addressing the audience. “We are committed to preserving our environment as a major crude oil producing company and country. We provide professional HSE services. We also have our HSE steering committee that oversee and coordinate related matter at the corporate level. We have the HSE SPC, the HSE steering committee and under these two entities, we have four subcommittees; environment, occupational health, oil spill and safety. We have also our 18 HSE divisions that report directly to their managers with close coordination with the SPC.
