Dear Parent/Guardian:
The school year is off to a great start. We have a couple of new staff members at the middle
school this year. High School Band Director, Mr. Kurt Schneiderhan will be joining us for part of
each school day. He will teach fifth grade band and will also give sectionals to fifth grade students.
Also new to our building this year as a personal care aide is Miss Eva Frank. Miss Frank joins us
after years of serving as an aide in the elementary school.
Our first middle school parent advisory committee meeting will be held on Monday, September
17 th at 9 AM in the guidance conference room of the middle school. All parents are welcome
to attend the meeting. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at
mmitchell@schuylkillvalley.org or at 610-916-5617. You do not have to wait for a parent advisory
committee meeting to raise questions, concerns, or provide positive feedback about our building. We
welcome parent input and strongly believe that an extremely key ingredient to student success is
strong, two-way communication between parents/guardians and teachers/administrators.
Finally, I am excited to announce that the school board voted to support and bring back our
off campus outdoor education program for our eighth grade students. The eighth graders will travel
to Hawk Mountain during the week of October 1 st and experience character education, team building,
as well as incorporating their school subject areas into the camp experience.
Sincerely,
Michael T. Mitchell, Jr.
Principal

REMINDER OF SCHOOL PROCEDURES
We understand that children forget things and mornings are busy, however, we do need to have guidelines.
If your child has an appointment and needs to be picked up from school early, you must send a written note with your child. Your
child should stop in the office on the way to homeroom to get a pass to leave early. At the time your child needs to be dismissed, they
will report to the office and you can sign them out of the building. This eliminates interruptions to classrooms and you do not have to
wait for the staff to find your child.
If your child forgets any items he/she may need for the day, you can drop them in the office and when your child has the opportunity
to stop by the office they can retrieve their items. Office staff will email teachers and let them know items are in the office. Office
staff only pages students to the office during the morning and afternoon announcements. Calls will not be made to classrooms to remind
students of forgotten items or to relay personal messages to students.
For parent pick-up at the end of the day, please remember to send a note with your child. Your child will drop that note off in the
office on their way to homeroom. Come into the office at the end of the day and sign your child out. Students who are parent pick ups
will be dismissed at second call, which is approximately 2:30 p.m. Any student who is a parent pick-up must be picked up no later
than 2:40 p.m. Supervision is not provided after school.
READ 25
The Pennsylvania State Standards recommend that all students read 25 books per year. At SVMS, we expect all students to complete
this standard and do reward students who do so at the end of the school year. Start the school year off with this goal in mind and set
aside 20 to 30 minutes a night for reading to help your child become a more fluent and stronger reader. Reading is an essential skill for
learning in all school subjects and for lifelong learning. We would love to have all of our students be rewarded for reaching the goal of
25 books!
HANDBOOKS
Your child received the updated Student Handbook. Please make sure you and your child are familiar with the content. It will be
beneficial to all of us if we work together to reinforce guidelines which will support the day-to-day schedule of the students. The book
presents information on organization, student, and time management concerns that often surface in the middle school years. You may
also want to check out the website, www.mydiscoverzone.com, that will provide more tips and activities for organization and study
skills.
BOOK FAIR
Book Fair October 12-October 19, 2012
BACK TO SCHOOL DANCE
The Back to School Dance will be held on Friday, September 21, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Admission
is $3.00. Drinks and snacks can be purchased for 50 cents. Students must be picked up promptly at 9:00 p.m., however, if a student
must leave early, a parent note should be presented upon arrival to the dance indicating what time the student will be picked up.
Appropriate dress code is enforced. If a student is academically ineligible or on privilege denial, they cannot attend the dance.
SIXTH GRADE RESPONSIBILITY
To encourage 6th graders to be more responsible, a drawing is held each week for 6th grade students . To be eligible for the drawing,
the student must have completed their homework for all major subjects and remembered to bring necessary materials to class. The winner
of the drawing is announced each Friday morning. Students receive a certificate from Sheetz.
The final winners for 2011-2012 school year were: Ben Tetreault, Katarina Werber, and Ashley Border.
