CAFETERIA CHARGING
Beginning Monday, March 26, students in eighth grade are no longer allowed to charge any meals in the
cafeteria. When eighth graders move to the High School, they must have a negative balance here at the Middle
School. This change is put into practice so students become accustom to the “no charging” rules at the
High School next school year!
If you have any questions regarding your child’s cafeteria account, you can contact Mr. Hennigh at 610-916
-5726.
SPRING SPORTS
Junior High Sports practices begin on Monday, March 12, 2012. No athlete will be permitted to start practice
unless they have submitted the appropriate form to the Athletic Office. Also, make sure you bring appropriate
clothing for outdoor practices.
GRADE SIX RESPONSIBILITY
To encourage 6 th graders to be more responsible, a drawing is held each week for 6 th grade students who are
being responsible with school. To be eligible for the drawing, the student must have completed his/her
homework for all major subjects and remembered to bring necessary materials to class. The winner of the
drawing is announced each Friday morning.
The winners since the last newsletter are: Mary Brooks, Donald Ballou, Rylee Arena, Gabriella Ohnmacht

SPELLING BEE
Approximately 150 students participated in the preliminary spelling bee on Tuesday, January 24, 2012
during the ISTA period. From those competitors, the finalists for the Schuylkill Valley Middle School
spelling bee were selected. They were as follows:
Grade 8: Daniel Tetreault, Kevin Cook, Daisy Grace, Noel Maloco, Calliesta Watmuff,
Skyler Perera, Samantha Burkert, Noah Bohn, Evan Whitmoyer, Stefanie Williams, Alexus
Senishen and Cailynn Chase
Grade 7: Emily Lupold, Kylie Brown, Daniel Behler, Kale Graybill, Dylan Brown,
Aaron Danks, and Elyse Geiger
Grade 6: Michael Shott, Jacob Witman, Emily Gunkel, Richard Wolfson, Elijah Horst, and
Dawson Herb
These students competed in Schuylkill Valley’s Reading Eagle sponsored spelling bee which was held
in the Middle School gymnasium on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 9 a.m. Although eighth grade had the
largest representation, this year’s winner and runner up were a seventh grader and sixth grader respectively.
First place honors were awarded to Emily Lupold, and Elijah Horst earned runner-up status.
Somewhat unique words in this year’s competition included powwow, poi, and gunnysack. Some competitors
were eliminated by misspelling some of those unique words, and by the eighth round all spellers
with the exception of the two winners had been eliminated. In round 10, Elijah misspelled cockatoo,
putting Emily in position to win the contest. She correctly spelled seersucker in the one-person eleventh
round. Both winners were awarded with certificates and medals from Connie Andrews, the Newspaper
in Education Coordinator from The Reading Eagle. All participants received a certificate from
The Reading Eagle, beautifully inscribed by SVMS art teacher, Mrs. Seymour; in addition, all the contestants
were photographed for the school newspaper and yearbook.
Having attained their positions, Emily and Elijah qualify for the Championship Finals, scheduled for
Monday, March 12, 2012 at the Miller Center for the Arts at 7:00 p.m. Please make plans to attend and
support these superb spellers.
