When the Conficker virus was first identified in early 2009 it was learned that 30% of all home and office computers
using MicroSoft operating systems could be infected simply because the owners had not enabled automatic updates
to their system. Not sure what an Operating system is? Unsure if you enabled the automatic update? This course is
for you. If you own a computer, or use one in an office, and are puzzled by the phrase, automatic updates, you
should take this class. Managing your computer is not unlike learning what steps you need to take to keep your car
running. Did you learn how to put air in your tires, check the oil and other fluid levels? Most of us did this. Now
you can go take a simple course that can guide you through the process of learning what ordinary things you need
to know to keep your computer secure. This hands-on course will be led by Neil Spellman, a Network Security
Analyst at WPI, who has been teaching people how to effect security practices in their lives. The instruction is aimed
at people who use their computers regularly but have only a small degree of knowledge what software they own
and how it can be used to keep their personal information secure. You could spend $100 or $200 or you can learn
how to manage, configure and secure it yourself. (If you have a laptop computer, please bring it with you. If you
don’t have a laptop, please call the Night Life office one week before the class so we can arrange to have one available
for your use.) The class will be held in the WPI Campus Center, Chairman’s Room.
