A Teacher’s Reflections
‘An Effective Teacher’
By: Marty Brock
NOTE: As part of his Baker certification
this past fall, Nick Tomasic had to interview
a mentor (Marty) about the attributes of
effective teaching. The following is Marty’s
response:
The core quality a great teacher must have
is a near fanatical enthusiasm for the subject
matter. It has to be tempered with realism
and an understanding of what a student
brings to the equation, but a teacher
who does not love what he is teaching
is doomed to failure.
kid’s excitement if he works at it…and
some teachers seem to be dedicated to
doing just that.
From the student’s point of view, the chief
attribute is a generally positive attitude
about learning. That comes from home. If
parents distrust teachers, kids will too.
Most human beings react to enthusiasm
with curiosity and to cynicism
with disdain. If you see someone
coming out of a restaurant rubbing his
stomach and saying “yummy,” you are
more disposed to go in and have dinner
yourself. If he comes out complaining
about the food and the service, you are
most likely to be reluctant to spend
your money there.
Another attribute for a successful
teacher is likeability. It’s not essential,
but it’s helpful. You are more likely to
follow the advice of someone you
admire and respect than someone you
detest.
The teacher who doesn’t communicate
“why” someone should learn whatever
it is he is teaching is going to fail to
reach any student who has not arrived
pre-programmed. The “burnout” may
even be able to destroy the pre-programmed
