Environmental awareness
• Environmental awareness is increasing, moving from local
(noise, local air quality, tanker pollution) to global
worldwide issues (climate change, ozone layer…)
• The political world gets involved
Design
• Airbus’ approach to design and production takes account
of the entire aircraft life cycle, enabling key decisions and
improvements concerning environmental performance to
be implemented as early as possible in the process.
Critical design decisions effect environmental performance in
every phase of the life cycle
Aircraft environmental performance is being improved
through the development of:
– generic, multipurpose technologies (new materials, sensors and
effectors),
– specific technologies (airframe, propulsion, operations) that
directly target noise or emission reduction,
– synergies and architectures and
– potential aircraft configurations.
• Optimisation in terms of
Aircraft architecture
Weight (new advanced materials)
Aerodynamics
Trade-offs between issues (Noise, NOx, CO 2 …)
• An example: the Airbus-patented 0-splice inlet nacelle
Liner designed to reduce the noise generated by the engine
fan
Former design: two or three part + joining splice
– Counterproductive by adding aerodynamic noise
Reduce the number of splices
Supply chain
© AIRBUS S.A.S. All rights reserved. Confidential and proprietary document.
• Airbus activities are increasingly international and new
suppliers are emerging in areas where the company sells,
operates and manufactures its products.
• The A380 has been a catalyst for a raft of innovative new
technologies and a whole new way of working together
across the industry
Shared information,
Faster communication and
Closer collaboration
• Since 2002, Procurement has aimed to include
environmental criteria in the selection and qualification of
suppliers and to promote the introduction of environmental
requirements in contractual agreements.
Manufacturing: an example
© AIRBUS S.A.S. All rights reserved. Confidential and proprietary document.
• In the last few years, Airbus sites
and workforce have expanded in
response to growing market
demand for its aircraft, with total
energy consumption therefore
increasing by six percent
between 2004 and 2005.
However, when assessed
against levels of production,total
energy consumption actually
dropped by five percent, which
was mainly due to widespread
energy-saving measures across
the sites,including technological
improvements in the production
process and employee training
programmes
• Fuel is by all means minimised during operations
Pre-flight activities
– Clean aircraft
– Weight and balance
– Flight planning
In-flight activities
– Climb and descent profiles
– Flying close to the optimum, according to control authorisations
(step climbs, optimise speed…)
– Limit holding patterns
• Airbus supports its customers through regular advices and
the publication of dedicated brochures on fuel optimisation
Conclusion
© AIRBUS S.A.S. All rights reserved. Confidential and proprietary document.
• 40 years ago, aviation was considered as:
A dream
A way to open our eyes
A way to widen our horizon and build up exchanges
• Over this period
Awareness for environmental concerns has risen
Other means of evasion have been created and developed
(TV, phone, computers, internet…)
Aviation is not (yet) considered as a necessity (especially in
Europe)
• Strong opponents are gaining wider audience, including
towards policy makers
We must kill the myths
March 31, 07 Page 31
Conclusion: What’s next?
• Technology is key
• Infrastructure and operations must be a part of the
solution
• Co-operation between stakeholders is paramount
The way forward
© AIRBUS S.A.S. All rights reserved. Confidential and proprietary document.
• We must change the way we communicate.
Air transport is an easy target but cannot be a resigned victim.
• We must work together to establish the correct picture of air
transport
Avoid a too technical answer to emotional concerns
Emphasize what we bring to society and what society would
lose with less aviation
Be proud of our past records
Explain our efforts, the necessary tradeoffs, the need to clear
the scientific uncertainties;
Keep demonstrating that we are responsible
Indicate our objectives and commitments and report on them
Say what we do… and do what we say
Build trust on our sector
