Successful Scope Family Fun Day David Casha meeting Victoria’s Premier, The Hon Dr Denis Napthine MLA at the Scope Family Fun Day. More than 550 people enjoyed a fantastic family day out at the Scope Family Fun Day, on Saturday, 23rd March. We were delighted to see so many families, friends of Scope and people in the community, come together to explore the Collingwood Children’s Farm and participate in all the fun games and activities. This event was welcoming and inclusive for everyone in the community to enjoy. We were joined by Victorian Premier The Hon Dr Denis Napthine MLA and the Minister for Children and Early 8 www.scopevic.org.au Childhood Development Wendy Lovell. They announced the 14 community organisations that will deliver $3.7 million from the Victorian Coalition Government in Early Intervention Services to hundreds of children with additional needs. Scope is among the recipients of the 500 Early Childhood Intervention Service places. Special thanks to the Scope supporters and partners who helped make the event possible, including Coles, St John Vianney’s Primary School, Our Lady’s Primary School, Funtastic, Mix 101.1, the Rotary Club of Collingwood, Northcote SES Unit, the Collingwood Police Station, the Syndal North Girl Guides, the Collingwood Children’s Farm, and Perfect Events. Thank you to everyone who came down to join in the fun and to make the day a wonderful success.
Borneo Challenge Over the past eight months, Jenni Hendy has been busy raising money for Scope as part of the Scope Borneo Challenge. The final stage of the challenge was to take part in a trek through the Borneo jungle. lots of their home grown rice. We also had homemade rice wine and rice whisky whilst singing along to Karaoke in our best Malaysian. I became quite used to sitting on the floor to eat my meals as the Iban people do. They were such friendly people, who live simply as one big family supporting each other. Jenni Hendy with her guides during her trek through Borneo. On the 21st April, I flew out of Melbourne heading to Kuching in Malaysian Borneo. After a day in Kuching, it was time to head to the jungle. It was a five-hour drive, followed by a two-hour long boat ride to get there. What an adventure! We arrived in an area called the Upper Batang Ai, where some lovely young men from the Iban kept us safe, leading us through jungle each day. They built our camp from scratch with trees in the jungle. Sleeping out in the open and listening to the sounds of the jungle overnight was amazing. Trekking in the jungle was a challenge due to the heat and humidity, steep climbs and leeches. The trekking sure pushed me to my limits! We were all drenched in sweat but what a delight it was when we reached a pristine waterfall and had a swim. We sat out on the edge of salt lick, where the orangutans sharpen their teeth, and we could hear the gibbons calling each other in the distance. I loved staying at the Iban longhouse overnight. We ate freshly cooked fish, chicken, fern fronds, bamboo, wild ginger, water spinach, jungle fruit and On the last day we spent time volunteering at the Matang Wildlife Centre and Semengohh Nature Reserve. We cleaned the orangutan enclosures, made treats for them, hid food in their enclosures, and watched these amazing creatures go about their day. It was such a special experience. I left this challenge with some amazing memories and new friends. Thank you to my family, friends and work colleagues who gave up their own time without hesitation to support me with all my fundraising activities. I am proud to say that I almost doubled my target and raised $6,315 for Scope during this challenge. Jenni Hendy Southern Region Regional Manager Get me about The Get Me About website enables residents in the Eastern Region to get out and about in their community, by themselves, or with their friends and family. The Get Me About website was developed to provide local transport and mobility information to residents in the Eastern Metropolitan Region in one easy-to-find spot. Scope in the Eastern Region was a partner in the development of the website. The website also supports residents to attend health appointments by providing information about parking, accommodation options, and nearby facilities (e.g. ATM, supermarket, laundry, chemist and petrol station). This information is intended to improve the patient journey for people travelling away from home for their health. The partners of the Get Me About website project include Yarra Ranges Council, together with representatives from Scope, EACH, Eastern Regional Libraries, Neighbourhood Houses (CHAOS), Eastern Volunteers, and Yooralla. The Get Me About website was launched at the ‘Transport in the East’ Expo in February 2013, with more than 100 people in attendance.
