Back To School Smoothies
To start the day, as an after-school snack, or anytime of day for kids of all ages, fruit smoothies are
nutritious, delicious, easy, fun, and ready in minutes! Begin with these recipes, then adapt them to make
your own.
Superb Smoothies: Freezing fresh fruit or using frozen fruit yields a thicker consistency Smoothie, and this
is how our family loves them, or you can add ice. To take advantage of seasonal fresh fruit at its peak,
select the ripest fruit for the sweetest flavor. Clean, peel, and slice fruit and freeze on a cookie sheet in
freezer. When frozen, transfer to freezer containers or freezer bags, mark, and store in freezer. You can
even measure out frozen amounts of fruit by recipe and bag, marking with recipe title. If you have leftover
Smoothie, freeze leftover as a frozen snack.
Food for Thought: The National Cancer Institute estimates that only one in three adults and one in five
children get the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. 1/2 cup of fruit equals one
serving. Just some of the benefits these fruits used in our Smoothies provide: All are high in Vitamin C and
fiber --- some are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin D and potassium; some are high in beta carotene, like
cantaloupes and apricots, Sunflower seeds are high in calcium and protein and tofu is high in protein with
no cholesterol. Nuts, like macadamias, pecans, almonds and pistachios are high in fiber, potassium,
magnesium, folic acid, and calcium. Can all this nutrition be a substitute for donuts or a bag of chips? Try a
Smoothie and see!
Straight "A" Smoothie
1-2 Ripe Bananas, fresh or frozen 1 Cup Strawberries, fresh or frozen
Outstanding Substitutions: Substitute 1 cup fresh or frozen peeled, sliced peaches or plums or kiwi or
mangoes or papaya for bananas or strawberries to the recipe and leave out yogurt and honey for a noncreamy
version with lots of versatility! Substitute a variety of juices for the orange juice --- my favorites are
by Looza in the juice department of Jungle Jim's --- they are all natural and come in flavors like Mango,
Passion Fruit, Apricot Nectar, Black Currant, and pure Cranberry Nectar. Check out the all natural juices
in the Health Food Department also, especially the Coconut-Pineapple. Substitute milk for juice and add 1/4
