FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, London & New York, 24th March:
The 12-part lecture programme at The International Ceramics Fair & Seminar, taking place this year from the 11 th -14 th June at
the Park Lane Hotel on Piccadilly, has become a “must” for ceramics aficionados from all over the world.
First introduced at the launch of the fair nearly 30 years ago, it remains as popular as ever, with the line-up of speakers for the
2009 fair as impressive as ever. Many lecturers use the opportunity to unveil their most recent discoveries and research.
A new departure this year is a panel discussion on Thursday 11 th June (2.15-3.15pm) combining academic, commercial and
artistic viewpoints. Dame Rosalind Savill, Director of The Wallace Collection, London, Adrian Sassoon, exhibitor at the fair,
the celebrated potter Kate Malone and glass artist Angela Jarman, come together for Inspired by The Wallace Collection,
London – Contemporary Ceramics and Glass. They will air their views, their differing responses to and how they have been
inspired by the world famous collections, which include 18 th century French painting, furniture, porcelain and Old Masters,
housed in this most elegant of museums, situated in a town-house in London’s Manchester Square.
Both Kate Malone and Angela Jarman were among the artists invited by Adrian Sassoon to make objects inspired by works of
art in The Wallace Collection. The photograph above shows Kate Malone working in her studio in Spain, against a backdrop
of images of porcelain in the Wallace and of her own drawings inspired by pieces in the collection. She is particularly excited
by the patterns on 18 th Century Sèvres Porcelain and is making new vessels using decoration inspired by these surfaces. The
other ceramic artists involved are: Tanya Brett, Christie Brown, Claire Curneen, Michael Eden, Michael Flynn, Charlotte
Hodes, Walter Keeler, Andrew Wicks, with glass artists Katharine Coleman and Catherine Hough showing alongside Angela
Jarman.
Renowned for his lively models in porcelain Michael Flynn, who visited the Wallace collection many times as a child, is
inspired by two busts by Houdon, the Kiss Given and the Kiss Received. The Armoury collection and particularly the helmets
have fired the imagination of the glass artist Angela Jarman and her new cast glass pieces will have references to them. The
animal sculptor Tanya Brett has been drawn to a set of equestrian armour from around 1500 etched with zodiac signs and
subjects from the Old Testament. These symbols will be incorporated into a new ceramic sculpture.
Prices: approximately £1,500-5,000

Other topics under discussion this year in the lecture programme include the Taxa report created by J.J. Kaendler for Meissen
between 1739 and 1746, in which he listed his porcelain models. The distinguished academic and collector Professor Dr
Johannes Rafael is the lecturer. In addition, Reino Liefkes, Senior Curator, Ceramics and Glass, at the Victoria and Albert
Museum talks about the new ceramics galleries at the museum and Dr Ekaterina Khmelnitskaya, Curator of Russian
porcelain, The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia, examines Russian Imperial porcelain in the Winter Palace
during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I (1825-1855).
