A Cosmos of Creativity
Shakespeare lies at the centre of our dramatic
universe. Here at Stratford, we celebrate him in
our theatres by honouring his text and by placing
it in the context of the work of his predecessors,
contemporaries and successors, so we can better
understand his breathtaking achievement. In doing
so, we range freely through the best and most
enduring works of the dramatic canon.
This season, you can explore the diversity of
Shakespeare’s genius in three such very different
plays as Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and
Julius Caesar. You also have a rare opportunity
to compare his work to that of his friend and
rival Ben Jonson, whose Bartholomew Fair is a
brilliant satire of life in London, Shakespeare’s
adopted city, or with that of Jean Racine,
whose Phèdre is searing drama from a different
dramatic tradition. Both these plays are
masterpieces in their own right – and to see
them performed is to discover how radical
are the differences between the world’s
greatest playwright and his nearest peers.
Shakespeare’s unprecedented
exploration of the human comedy paved
the way for such subsequent dramatists
as Anton Chekhov, Edmond Rostand and
Oscar Wilde, whose work also features on our
stages this season. His influence reveals itself
even in our two musicals, one of which shares
its ancestry with The Comedy of Errors while the
other draws directly on Romeo and Juliet.
Our own writers here in Canada owe no less to
Shakespeare and the extraordinary creative ferment
of his age. George F. Walker’s Canadian classic
Zastrozzi uses the Jacobean revenge tragedy as its
point of departure, while Sunil Kuruvilla’s Rice Boy,
newly revised for our production, is rooted, like
some of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, in the tensions
between parents and children. So too is Morris
Panych’s The Trespassers, a brand-new play that
receives its world première here this season.
We are delighted to welcome you to this, our
57th season. We hope you will enjoy exploring with
us the astonishingly varied dramatic universe that
Shakespeare helped to create and that will always
honour him as its centre.

On Letters as Literature

A civilization survives through its language. Great
edifices may crumble, landscapes may alter
unrecognizably, trades and industries may change
and disappear, but as long as a language continues to
be spoken, the genus of a people will persist.
A living language is in constant flux, neologisms
springing up spontaneously as archaic forms fall out
of favour – sometimes, though not inevitably, for
good. A civilization begins to achieve permanence,
as far as mere mortals can know it, from the moment
it begins to commit its speech to a writing system.
Great literature is the stabilizing element that can
raise language, through constant, careful tending,
to a peak of refinement, eloquence, subtlety, grace
and beauty. A people can articulate its soul. Poetry
becomes possible. Literature is the great conserver:
it holds together what by experiment has been
found best in the language, establishing preferred
usage, setting standards, recognizing grammatical
and syntactical patterns, facilitating and stimulating
thought. Language is, as Steven Pinker reminds us in
his 2007 work, the very “Stuff of Thought.”
Both the English and French languages have been
spectacularly blessed over the many centuries of their
evolution by legions of writers of genius who have
raised each to a status of lingua franca in the modern
world comparable to that of Latin in the ancient.
Prominent among the many forms and genres in
both has been the simple personal letter. A modest
communication from friend to friend, among family
members, perhaps between strangers.
Numbers of our greatest authors have been
also our greatest correspondents. A personal
letter offers a chance to set aside the task of
the moment and enjoy spontaneous, informal
discourse for its own sake. Lytton Strachey, an
inveterate letter-writer, maintained that “No good
letter was ever written to convey information, or
to please its recipient: it may achieve both these
results incidentally; but its fundamental purpose
is to express the personality of the writer.”
So successful have some authors been at this that
their letters have been as treasurable as anything they
wrote. Diderot, Rousseau, Byron, Flaubert, Thackeray,
George Eliot, Swinburne and Henry James all fall
into this category. Voltaire was a peripatetic who
would wander from one lectern to another, each
containing a different work in progress, and one of
these would be certain to contain a letter. In the end,
correspondence fills nearly a third of the volumes in
his entire output.
Letters have become an esteemed literary form in
themselves. Mme de Sévigné lives on exclusively in
her letters; and Guèze de Balzac, if unable to attend
the salon of Mme de Rambouillet, would compose a
letter to be read out, passed around and commented
upon as earnestly as on a new poem. If in a hurry, he
would apologize, assuring the countess that had he
had more time the letter would have been shorter!
No marvel, then, that as extended prose fiction began
to appear in the late 17th and early 18th centuries,
the epistolary form was found to present a sound
organizing principle for the new form of the novel.
Oscar Wilde is certainly one of the most engaging
writers of letters in English. We know from countless
anecdotes and reports what a mesmerizing
conversationalist he could be; how he led in every
encounter while never seeming to dominate;
how, rather than ostentatiously parade his own
inexhaustible wit, he stimulated others to shine.
We know how he could hold an audience (even
sometimes a would-be hostile one) spellbound while
lecturing on some topic about which he may or
may not have actually known very much. We have
the reports of his sardonic curtain speeches in the
theatre. But we no longer have him. Fortunately,
the man remains vividly present to us in these
incomparable letters, especially on a rare occasion
when we can hear them performed in a live reading.
The schoolboy is here, writing carefully home to
Mama; there is the ever-so-smart undergraduate
organizing heaven and hell; the dazzling lecturer

on aesthetics making very sure he looks the
part, and being in equal measure impressed and
condescending among the rough miners of the
American Wild West. He deluges a publisher with
names of aristocratic ladies who might favour
him with articles if Oscar became editor of a new
periodical; he descants on critics, inveighs against
censorship, seeks productions for his plays and is very
free with advice to theatre professionals on how to do
their jobs. And everywhere there is his Nemesis, Lord
Alfred Douglas, for whose love he destroys himself.
Wilde rises to magnificent heights in his rage against
the treatment of children and other victims of an
unjust society in the prison system; and finally he puts
a brave face on disaster, performing his life to the last
as surely as ever he had lived his art. The man is in his
letters. Letters, perhaps, even more valuable than some
of his works? What would we not give for a sheaf of
letters from William Shakespeare as revealing as these?
The early 20th century was similarly rich in epistles
from notables, Katherine Mansfield and D. H.
Lawrence among them. Since the end of the Second
World War, technology has made such startling and
lightning-speed advances and the pace of life has
accelerated so unrecognizably that once again we
are led to question whether the personal letter might
not have become yet another casualty of progress.
Time has shrunk. There is e-mail now; forests are
disappearing and paper is becoming an endangered
commodity; and literacy has collapsed in our
schools under the relentless onslaught of the more
mindless manifestations of so-called pop culture.
Futurists are trumpeting joyously the disappearance
of handwriting and books within twenty years and
of the alphabet soon after that. Our young, and nolonger-so-young,
are walking into walls and under
moving vehicles while utterly absorbed in their tiny
texty-pushy-thumby toys.
Video and surveillance cameras we will have in
abundance, to be sure, but will they bear witness to
our personal and social human experience quite as
effectively, quite as intimately, quite as contagiously,
quite as inspirationally as the letter has done
throughout the centuries? Will anybody care?

Wilde at Heart
When I first read Oscar Wilde’s letters, fifty years
ago, I thought, “What a wonderful autobiography.”
The idea of a one-man show, however, did not
occur till the approach of the 2000 season, when
Richard Monette, the Festival’s artistic director at
the time, decided to mount a series of events to
commemorate the centenary of Wilde’s death. Ever
Yours, Oscar evolved out of that; and then, when I
knew we were going to be doing The Importance of
Being Earnest in 2009, I thought this would make the
perfect companion piece.
Working on this show and on Earnest at the
same time has underlined for me the terrible irony
of Wilde’s fall from grace at the very height of his
success. Earnest opened on St. Valentine’s Day, 1895;
four days later, on February 18, the Marquess of
Queensberry left his famously misspelled card, “For
Oscar Wilde posing somdomite,” at Wilde’s club. By
responding with a suit of libel, Wilde took a fateful
and irrevocable step toward his own destruction –
and it is heartbreaking to be witness to the pain of
that destruction through the medium of his letters.
The great thing about Ever Yours, Oscar, so
brilliantly compiled by Peter Wylde, is that it gives
us a glimpse of its subject that we find nowhere
else. And we see into the hearts of two distinctly
different Wildes: the one before prison and the one
afterwards. In his earlier letters we see a gradually
increasing hubris, culminating in the catastrophe
with Queensberry; after his prison experience – from
which he never recovered, mentally or physically – a
deeper note of humanity is sounded.
Oscar Wilde once said that he put all his genius
into his life and only his talent into his work. I hope
that this performance, together with our production
of The Importance of Being Earnest, will give you some
sense of the extraordinary nature of both.

and the Stratford
Shakespeare Festival,
both in its last year
under canvas and in the Tyrone Guthrie production
of Tamburlaine the Great on Broadway. He performed
with and subsequently co-managed the Straw
Hat Players for three seasons in Port Carling and
Peterborough, Ontario.
He took his BA with first-class honours at
the University of Toronto in 1962 and went on
to graduate work at Harvard and to teaching
in the Slavic department of Smith College in
Massachusetts. In 1973 he became literary manager
of Toronto Arts Productions at the St. Lawrence
Centre, where his translation of Chekhov’s Three
Sisters had been produced the year before. He was
head of acting at George Brown Theatre School for
thirteen years (1986-1999), teaching also at the Royal
Conservatory Opera School, the National Theatre
School of Canada (1980-2001), Stratford’s Birmingham
Conservatory and, since 2000, Ryerson University
Theatre School.
His directing credits include work with the Toronto
Children’s Opera Chorus and Pacific Opera Victoria
in British Columbia. He continues to work as a
professional actor and appeared in the Canadian
Stage production of The Beard of Avon at the Bluma
Appel Theatre in Toronto.
He occasionally lectures on the cultural and
historical backgrounds of classic plays at first
rehearsals for professional acting companies such as
Soulpepper and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
He was recently embalmed in a taped interview for
the archives of Theatre Museum Canada. He salutes
his many outstanding graduates who are gracing all
four Stratford stages yet again this season.
Oscar Wilde
Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in
Dublin on October 16, 1854. Tutored at home until
age 10, he attended the Portora Royal School in
Enniskillen before embarking on studies at Trinity
College, Dublin, and Magdalen College, Oxford,
where he distinguished himself both by his academic
brilliance and his flamboyance of manner and dress.
After university, he settled in London, where he
became a spokesman for the Aesthetic Movement,
noted for its espousal of “art for art’s sake.” He
went on to lecture on the subject in a celebrated
tour of Canada and the United States. Married
with two children, he supported his family as a
journalist, later serving as editor of The Woman’s
World. Throughout this period he produced a
wide variety of prose works, from fairy tales such
as The Happy Prince to the controversial novel The
Picture of Dorian Gray. His first successful play, Lady
Windermere’s Fan, was produced in 1892, beginning
a brief but brilliant theatrical career that culminated
with The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).
In 1895, Wilde’s failed attempt to sue the
Marquess of Queensberry for libel led to his being
charged with “gross indecency.” At issue was his
relationship with the Marquess’s son, Lord Alfred
Douglas. Wilde was convicted and sentenced
to two years’ hard labour. Upon completion of
his sentence, he moved to the continent, living
mainly in France. On November 30, 1900, only
three-and-a-half years after his release, he died in
Paris of cerebral meningitis. He was 46 years old.

Brian Bedford – director, actor
27th season: Director of The Importance of Being Earnest and Ever
Yours, Oscar. Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest and
Performer of Ever Yours, Oscar. After training at the Royal Academy
of Dramatic Art and appearances in London’s West End and with
the Royal Shakespeare Company, Brian Bedford came to North
America in John Gielgud’s production of Peter Shaffer’s Five Finger Exercise. He has
acted and directed in Los Angeles, San Diego, Washington, D.C., Chicago and, for
26 seasons, at Stratford, Canada. His one-man Shakespeare show, The Lunatic, The
Lover, and the Poet, has taken him around the world. Starring in many Broadway
productions, he has received six Best Actor Tony nominations and won the award
for Molière’s The School for Wives. Other awards include the Obie, Outer Critics
Circle, N.Y. Drama Desk and L.A. Critics Award. Mr. Bedford has made numerous
appearances on television and film, and supplied the voice of Robin Hood in Walt
Disney’s animated film. In 1997, he was inducted into the American Theater Hall
of Fame.
Kevin Fraser – lighting designer
23rd season: Lighting designer of The Importance of Being Earnest,
West Side Story, Ever Yours, Oscar and A Funny Thing Happened on
the Way to the Forum. Kevin has designed lighting for many theatre
and opera productions across Canada. Stratford designs include
The Music Man, Cabaret, My One and Only, To Kill a Mockingbird,
Shakespeare’s Will, South Pacific, The Glass Menagerie, Orpheus Descending,
Guys and Dolls, The King and I, My Fair Lady, Inherit the Wind, Alice Through the
Looking Glass and many more. Other recent credits include Medea at the Canon
Theatre in Toronto (Mirvish Productions) and The Marriage of Figaro (Canadian
Opera Company). For more than 20 years Kevin has been resident lighting
designer for Toronto’s Opera Atelier. Kevin has received five Dora Mavor Moore
Award nominations (Toronto) and one Jessie Richardson Award nomination
(Vancouver). Kevin is a graduate of Ryerson Theatre School and a member of
Associated Designers of Canada.
Holly Korhonen – assistant stage manager
Eighth season: Assistant stage manager of The Importance of Being
Earnest and Ever Yours, Oscar. Holly is thrilled to be back working
at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival after enjoying a long-awaited
winter vacation. Credits include Cabaret, My One and Only, The
Comedy of Errors, South Pacific, Oliver!, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Edward
II, The Count of Monte Cristo, Anything Goes, Henry VI: Revenge in France and Revolt
in England (Stratford Shakespeare Festival); The Love List, My Fair Lady and Noises
Off (Thousand Islands Playhouse); Strawberries in January, A Guide to Mourning
and Mary’s Wedding (Globe Theatre); Miracle on 34th Street (Grand Theatre); and
Zadie’s Shoes and Belle (Factory Theatre). Holly was also the stage manager for
the Birmingham Conservatory in 2006 and 2007. She is grateful to have been a

Janine Ralph – production stage manager

20th season: Production stage manager of the Tom Patterson
Theatre. Stage manager of Ever Yours, Oscar. Janine is delighted
to be returning for her second season as production stage
manager at the Tom Patterson Theatre, where last season she
was also privileged to work with Michael Langham and Simon Callow on There
Reigns Love. For the Stratford Shakespeare Festival Janine has stage-managed a
variety of musicals and plays at both the Avon and Festival theatres, including
The Gondoliers, Gypsy, Carousel, Henry V, An Enemy of the People, The Merry Wives of
Windsor, One Tiger to a Hill and Henry VIII. Janine also worked on the Asian Games’
opening and closing ceremonies in Doha, Qatar, and has worked in a variety of
theatres in Ontario and for BBC TV in England.
Jennifer Schamehorn – production stage manager

Third season: Production stage manager of the Tom Patterson
Theatre. Stage manager of Ever Yours, Oscar. Jennifer’s favourite stage

Pentecost (Stratford Shakespeare Festival); Dialogues of the Carmelites (Wilfrid Laurier

She also spent 14 years as a resident stage manager for the Sunshine Festival Theatre
Company in Orillia. Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Toronto and is thrilled
to be starting graduate studies in drama this fall at the University of Guelph. She
makes her home in Stratford with her husband, Andy, and daughters, Mary and

Gillian Wolpert – assistant lighting designer
Third season: Assistant lighting designer of Three Sisters,
Bartholomew Fair, Ever Yours, Oscar and Phèdre. Gillian is delighted
to be returning for her third season in Stratford after serving as
assistant lighting designer on Oklahoma!, King Lear, Cabaret and
The Music Man. Gillian is a Jessie Richardson Award-nominated
lighting designer whose recent work includes the Toronto première of Soulless
(505 Productions), The Taxi Project (PEN Canada), Jesus My Boy and Driving Miss
Daisy (Pacific Theatre), A Man of No Importance (Acting Up Stage), The Unfortunate

staff. We’re here to help.
In case of emergency
Theatres and exits are equipped with
emergency lighting. Our staff are trained
in evacuation procedures. You are
requested to follow their instructions
and remain calm. You will be directed
to a meeting area, where you are to
remain unless otherwise advised by staff
or emergency personnel. If you discover
a fire, you should activate the nearest
fire alarm and, immediately following
evacuation, identify yourself to a staff
member and provide details.

auditorium and bring only bottled water
inside. Cameras are not permitted. Please
