2.3.6 Trial 7 Chemical seed dressings for control of root rot pathogens of English<br />

spinach<br />

The isolates Pythium 05/986, Phytophthora 05/986 and Rhizoctonia 04/793 were grown on the<br />

selective agar Potato carrot agar (PCA) for 12 days at 25 o C. These were homogenised and diluted in<br />

distilled water and made up to volume, 200 ml was added per pot (one plate per 3 L pot). This was<br />

incorporated into the top 3 cm of medium, consisting of peat, perlite and sand at a 1:1:1 ratio (pH 6.3<br />

and EC 450ms). Uncolonised and homogenised PCA was used as Nil pathogen treatments. A pool<br />

solution of the fungicides was made and volumes added to individual treatments. The seed was treated<br />

and allowed to air-dry overnight in a fume hood. It was sown the next day. A total of 50 seeds were<br />

uniformly sown in each pot. There were 16 treatments, which were replicated five times. Details of<br />

each treatment are presented below in Table A6.<br />
