Trustees<br />
Eunice Ashman Lewin was appointed to the SUNY Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees in February 2010.<br />
She serves on the board committees for audit; educ<strong>at</strong>ion, college readiness and success;<br />
communic<strong>at</strong>ions and external affairs; and academic medical centers and hospitals.<br />
Lewin is a commissioner <strong>of</strong> the Niagara Frontier Transport<strong>at</strong>ion Authority, a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Community Leadership Council for Say Yes to Educ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>Buffalo</strong>, a founding<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the Roswell Park Alliance and a board member for the Independent Health<br />
Found<strong>at</strong>ion. She is an emeritus member <strong>of</strong> the Canisius College Board <strong>of</strong> Regents, as<br />
well as a member <strong>of</strong> the Erie County chapter <strong>of</strong> Links and the Hispanic Women’s<br />
League. She is an origin<strong>at</strong>or <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Buffalo</strong> Niagara Guitar Festival.<br />
Among Lewin’s numerous regional and st<strong>at</strong>ewide honors are the <strong>Buffalo</strong> Urban<br />
League’s William L. Evans and Whitney M. Young Jr. Humanitarian Award, the<br />
Distinguished Alumni Award from UB’s Gradu<strong>at</strong>e <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, the Ebony and<br />
Ivory Civic Award, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, the N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
Conference for Community and Justice <strong>of</strong> Western New York 50th Annual Cit<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Award and the Marcus Garvey Community Service Award. She is a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Western New York Women’s Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame.<br />
In June 2010, she retired after a 30-year career as a bilingual social worker for the <strong>Buffalo</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Committee on Special Educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Lewin was born in Guantanamo, Cuba; her family immigr<strong>at</strong>ed to the United St<strong>at</strong>es in 1967. She earned a<br />
bachelor’s degree in sociology from Marymount Manh<strong>at</strong>tan College before moving to <strong>Buffalo</strong> in 1976. She holds<br />
master’s degrees in American and Puerto Rican studies, and in educ<strong>at</strong>ional administr<strong>at</strong>ion from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>Buffalo</strong>.<br />
S<strong>at</strong>ish K. Trip<strong>at</strong>hi<br />
President<br />
An intern<strong>at</strong>ionally distinguished researcher and transform<strong>at</strong>ive higher educ<strong>at</strong>ion leader,<br />
S<strong>at</strong>ish K. Trip<strong>at</strong>hi, PhD, was appointed the 15th president <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Buffalo</strong> on<br />
April 18, 2011.<br />
Trip<strong>at</strong>hi, who served as UB’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs<br />
from 2004-11, has led the university in achieving significant growth in research activity,<br />
enhanced student quality and diversity, and an expanded intern<strong>at</strong>ional presence. As<br />
president, he is committed to building on this strong found<strong>at</strong>ion, moving UB into the<br />
highest ranks <strong>of</strong> the n<strong>at</strong>ion’s leading research universities.<br />
Trip<strong>at</strong>hi served as dean <strong>of</strong> the Bourns College <strong>of</strong> Engineering <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
California-Riverside from 1997-2004. Previously, he spent 19 years as a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />
computer science <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Maryland, and held visiting pr<strong>of</strong>essorships <strong>at</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Paris-Sud in France and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Erlangen-Nuremberg in<br />
Germany.<br />
The first intern<strong>at</strong>ional-born president in UB’s history, he gradu<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> the top <strong>of</strong> his class<br />
from Banaras Hindu <strong>University</strong> in India and holds a doctor<strong>at</strong>e in computer science from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto,<br />
as well as three master’s degrees—one in computer science from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto and two in st<strong>at</strong>istics<br />
from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alberta and Banaras Hindu <strong>University</strong>. A fellow <strong>of</strong> the IEEE and the American Associ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
for the Advancement <strong>of</strong> Science, he was awarded the honorary doctor<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> science from the Indian Institute <strong>of</strong><br />
Inform<strong>at</strong>ion Technology, Allahabad.<br />
An active leader in the n<strong>at</strong>ional higher educ<strong>at</strong>ion community, Trip<strong>at</strong>hi serves on the board <strong>of</strong> directors <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Council for Higher Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Accredit<strong>at</strong>ion. He was appointed by Gov. Cuomo as co-chair <strong>of</strong> the Western New<br />
York Regional Economic Development Council.<br />

The Alfiero Center<br />
An architectural masterpiece <strong>of</strong> glass,<br />
brick, space and light, the three-story,<br />
23,000 square-foot building was named<br />
in honor <strong>of</strong> the chair and CEO <strong>of</strong><br />
Protective Industries, Sal H. Alfiero, who<br />
made a $2 million gift to the school. The<br />
Alfiero Center is UB’s first academic<br />
facility to be funded primarily through<br />
priv<strong>at</strong>e don<strong>at</strong>ions and is entirely<br />
student-focused. Adjoining the Jacobs<br />
<strong>Management</strong> Center on UB’s North<br />
Campus, the st<strong>at</strong>e-<strong>of</strong>-the-art facility<br />
serves as the hub <strong>of</strong> student life and<br />
activity <strong>at</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Management</strong>.<br />
