Member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
New York Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Trustees<br />
Council in Singapore prior to coming to UB.<br />
Eunice Ashman Lewin was appointed to the SUNY Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees in February 2010.<br />
She serves on the board committees for audit; educ<strong>at</strong>ion, college readiness and success;<br />
communic<strong>at</strong>ions and external affairs; and academic medical centers and hospitals.<br />
Lewin is a commissioner <strong>of</strong> the Niagara Frontier Transport<strong>at</strong>ion Authority, a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Community Leadership Council for Say Yes to Educ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>Buffalo</strong>, a founding<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the Roswell Park Alliance and a board member for the Independent Health<br />
Found<strong>at</strong>ion. She is an emeritus member <strong>of</strong> the Canisius College Board <strong>of</strong> Regents, as<br />
well as a member <strong>of</strong> the Erie County chapter <strong>of</strong> Links and the Hispanic Women’s<br />
League. She is an origin<strong>at</strong>or <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Buffalo</strong> Niagara Guitar Festival.<br />
Among Lewin’s numerous regional and st<strong>at</strong>ewide honors are the <strong>Buffalo</strong> Urban<br />
League’s William L. Evans and Whitney M. Young Jr. Humanitarian Award, the<br />
Distinguished Alumni Award from UB’s Gradu<strong>at</strong>e <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, the Ebony and<br />
Ivory Civic Award, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, the N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
Conference for Community and Justice <strong>of</strong> Western New York 50th Annual Cit<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Award and the Marcus Garvey Community Service Award. She is a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Western New York Women’s Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame.<br />
In June 2010, she retired after a 30-year career as a bilingual social worker for the <strong>Buffalo</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Committee on Special Educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Lewin was born in Guantanamo, Cuba; her family immigr<strong>at</strong>ed to the United St<strong>at</strong>es in 1967. She earned a<br />
bachelor’s degree in sociology from Marymount Manh<strong>at</strong>tan College before moving to <strong>Buffalo</strong> in 1976. She holds<br />
master’s degrees in American and Puerto Rican studies, and in educ<strong>at</strong>ional administr<strong>at</strong>ion from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>Buffalo</strong>.<br />
Charles F. Zukoski<br />
Provost and<br />
Executive Vice President<br />
for Academic Affairs<br />
An intern<strong>at</strong>ionally recognized scholar in chemical engineering and an accomplished<br />
leader in public-priv<strong>at</strong>e research partnerships, Charles F. Zukoski, PhD, was appointed<br />
provost and executive vice president for academic affairs in June 2012 following an<br />
intern<strong>at</strong>ional search.<br />
As the university’s second-ranking <strong>of</strong>ficer, the provost is responsible for leading the<br />
development and implement<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the university’s academic vision. A deep believer in<br />
the power <strong>of</strong> higher educ<strong>at</strong>ion to improve society, Zukoski is committed to the public<br />
research university as an institution th<strong>at</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>es opportunities for individuals to better<br />
their lives. Together with President S<strong>at</strong>ish K. Trip<strong>at</strong>hi, Zukoski is engaging the campus<br />
community with an initi<strong>at</strong>ive to capitalize on UB’s distinctive academic strengths.<br />
Zukoski joined UB from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Illinois <strong>at</strong> Urbana-Champaign, where he was<br />
the Elio Eliakim Tarika Chair <strong>of</strong> Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. At Illinois, he<br />
served as head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and as vice<br />
chancellor for research, where he led major changes in technology commercializ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
and economic engagement activities. A global citizen and leader in higher educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
intern<strong>at</strong>ionaliz<strong>at</strong>ion, he also was chairman <strong>of</strong> the Science and Engineering Research<br />
A member <strong>of</strong> the N<strong>at</strong>ional Academy <strong>of</strong> Engineering, Zukoski was named one <strong>of</strong> the Hundred Chemical Engineers<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Modern Era by the American Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemical Engineers. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from<br />
Reed College and a PhD in chemical engineering from Princeton <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Degrees<br />
Subject to completion <strong>of</strong> all degree requirements, degrees<br />
will be conferred as indic<strong>at</strong>ed upon those individuals<br />
listed herein who were identified by May 1, 2013, and<br />
upon such others as may meet the requirements <strong>of</strong> their<br />
respective degrees. Candid<strong>at</strong>es are listed according to<br />
actual d<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> degree conferral (September 2012,<br />
February 2013, and June 2013). Degree recipients will<br />
come forward to be congr<strong>at</strong>ul<strong>at</strong>ed during the<br />
<strong>commencement</strong> ceremony.<br />
The Gold Cord<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Buffalo</strong> pays special tribute to some <strong>of</strong><br />
its most accomplished gradu<strong>at</strong>es with the conferral <strong>of</strong> the<br />
gold cord. The gold cord is given in recognition <strong>of</strong> the<br />
outstanding achievement <strong>of</strong> students who are gradu<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
(or are projected to gradu<strong>at</strong>e) †† or †††. A long, braided<br />
neckpiece, the gold cord may be worn with the cap and<br />
gown <strong>at</strong> any <strong>commencement</strong> ceremony.<br />
L<strong>at</strong>in Honors<br />
Subject to completion <strong>of</strong> all degree requirements and<br />
s<strong>at</strong>isfaction <strong>of</strong> the following minimum criteria, L<strong>at</strong>in<br />
honors may be conferred as indic<strong>at</strong>ed upon the<br />
individuals listed herein and upon such others as may<br />
meet the requirements. To qualify for L<strong>at</strong>in honors,<br />
students must present a minimum <strong>of</strong> 60 credit hours <strong>of</strong><br />
UB undergradu<strong>at</strong>e coursework, <strong>at</strong> least 54 <strong>of</strong> which must<br />
be graded credits (i.e., not s<strong>at</strong>isfactory or uns<strong>at</strong>isfactory<br />
[grades <strong>of</strong> ‘S’ or ‘U’]). The UB GPA must be a minimum<br />
<strong>of</strong> 3.2 (to 3.499) for †, 3.5 (to 3.749) for †† and 3.75 (to<br />
4.0) for †††. To receive the L<strong>at</strong>in honors design<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />
the printed 2013 Commencement programs, candid<strong>at</strong>es<br />
for the June 2013 degree conferral d<strong>at</strong>e must qualify<br />
based upon their UB cumul<strong>at</strong>ive GPA through the Fall<br />
2012 semester and total number <strong>of</strong> UB credit hours<br />
projected through the Spring 2013 semester. Standings<br />
for L<strong>at</strong>in honors MAY change once final grades are<br />

Beta Alpha Psi 2012-2013<br />
Beta Alpha Psi, the N<strong>at</strong>ional Accounting Fr<strong>at</strong>ernity, is a scholastic and<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional organiz<strong>at</strong>ion whose primary objective is to encourage and give<br />
recognition to scholastic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional excellence in the field <strong>of</strong> accounting.<br />
In order to achieve these goals, the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion promotes the study and practice<br />
<strong>of</strong> accounting; provides opportunity for associ<strong>at</strong>ion with practicing accountants;<br />
and encourages a sense <strong>of</strong> ethical, social, and public responsibilities.<br />
Membership in the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion is open to all undergradu<strong>at</strong>e and gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />
accounting majors who have <strong>at</strong>tained the appropri<strong>at</strong>e cumul<strong>at</strong>ive grade point<br />
average and are in the top 35 percent <strong>of</strong> their class in all <strong>University</strong> courses<br />
