Mandatory Training
What is Mandatory Training and why do staff have to attend?
We all have an individual responsibility to ensure we attend the mandatory
training that is required for our job role on an ongoing basis.
Mandatory training is any training which needs to be completed in order to
comply with the legal framework within which we work.
For providers of health and social care some of these main standards are
defined by the Health & Safety Executive, the Health Care Commission, the
Commission for Social Care Inspectorate, the NHS Litigation Authority and
Counter Fraud and Security Management Service.
There is mandatory training that is common to all staff , for example ;
- Health and Safety
- Personal Safety
- Fire
- Infection Control
- Risk Management
- Incident Reporting
- Complaints handling
- Manual handling
- First Aid
- Data protection / confidentiality
- Safeguarding ( Children and Vulnerable Adults)
In Knowsley training is tiered in order to ensure that training is relevant to and
pitched at the appropriate level for the various staff groups
Some mandatory training is relevant to specific staff according to their role
and function e.g. Food Safety, Medicines Management, Mini Bus Driving etc.
Some of this training needs to be updated on a regular basis dependent on
the regulations. Keeping a record of this will help ensure you keep updated as
required.
How do I know what mandatory training to attend and how often I need
to update?
Each year the mandatory training is reviewed and agreed by Knowsley's
Strategic Workforce Development Group.
There are mandatory training matrices for both Health and Wellbeing staff
contained within the Workforce Development Prospectus. The matrices
provide a list of the training available, how often it should be updated and
guidance regarding which staff groups the training is relevant to.
These are guidance documents. Managers are expected to know what
training staff are expected to attend to perform their roles safely and
effectively.

If you are unsure about your mandatory training requirements members of the
Workforce Development Team will be happy to advise you.
Are there alternatives to classroom training?
Team sessions
Some training and update sessions can be delivered during team meetings,
e.g. Manual Handling Theory, Infection Control, and First Aid. Some of these
sessions can also be delivered outside of normal working hours.
Trainers are specified in course overviews within the Prospectus. Please
contact the trainer to enquire/ arrange a team session.
E learning
E learning is being introduced as part of a blended learning approach. This
will not completely replace classroom training but will provide an alternative
flexible method of learning.
The following sessions are some of the mandatory training that can be
completed via e learning that will be specified within the 2009/10 Prospectus
are
- Fire
- Equality & Diversity
- Health & Safety Awareness
- First Aid
- Anaphylaxis
- Safeguarding Adults and Children
- Mental Capacity Act
- Manual Handling Theory
- Infection Control ;
How can attendance of mandatory training be managed effectively
within services.
Please see the attached flowchart which describes the process for managing
mandatory training within Podiatry. I take this opportunity to give special
thanks to Steph MacGlashen for her work to produce this.
Attendance of mandatory training is managed proactively and effectively
within Podiatry by following this process. The department maintain their own
central records of staff training which is a required by external inspectors.
