Washington Reading Corps Hiring 

Solid Ground is now hiring for AmeriCorps members to serve in our communities through the Washington 

Reading Corps. These are full time positions for 10½ months, starting October 1, 2013. Members receive a 

monthly stipend of $1,150, plus a $5,550 education award at the end of their term of service. If you receive SSI 

benefits, TANF, food stamps, or other government entitlements your eligibility will not be affected by the 

AmeriCorps income. Through the Washington Reading Corps, AmeriCorps members at sites throughout 

Shoreline, Seattle, South King County, and Bellevue, provide direct daily literacy tutoring and help schools to 

harness the talent and energies of parents and community members as volunteer tutors. Members will be placed 

in schools, early childhood centers, and community centers, typically serving at one site: a school, non-profit, or 

preschool. Members will provide one-on-one and small group tutoring, recruit and train community volunteers in 

under-served schools, and develop their own leadership skills by participating in team trainings and by leading 

local service projects. The WRC, as a program of Solid Ground, is committed to undoing racism. Members will 

engage in year-long training to explore and understand the relationship of racism, illiteracy, and poverty. For

What is the Veterans' Assistance Fund?

How do I Apply for Veterans’ Assistance Fund? 

What Is The Veterans' Assistance Fund? 

Washington law requires each county to establish a fund for needy veterans and their families and the families of 

deceased veterans. The law is at Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 73.08.010. You may hear it called the 

"Veterans Assistance Fund" or "Veterans Relief." 

What type of Assistance is Available? 

It depends on what county you live in. Some counties provide direct cash assistance to pay for emergency needs 

such as shelter, utilities, medical needs, or food. Others provide vouchers for specific needs. There are set limits 

on the number of times per year that you can get assistance and the amount of cash help that you can get. The 

limits also vary by county. 

Am I Eligible For Veterans' Assistance? 

You must be a veteran, or the widow/widower, spouse or domestic partner, or dependent children of an eligible 

veteran. The criteria for eligibility are: 

1. You must be indigent (in financial need); and 

2. The veteran must have received an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions; 

and 

3. The veteran must have served in at least one of the following capacities: 

a. As a member in any branch of the armed forces of the U.S., including the national guard and armed 

forces reserves, and has fulfilled his/her initial military service obligation; 

b. As a member of the women's air forces service pilots; 

c. As a member of the armed forces reserves, National Guard, or Coast Guard, and has been called into 

federal service by a presidential select reserve call up for at least 180 days; 

d. As a civil services crewmember with service aboard a U.S. army transport service or U.S. Naval 

transportation service vessel in oceangoing service from December 7, 1941 through December 31, 

1946; 

e. As a member of the Philippine armed forces/scouts during the period of armed conflict from December 

7, 1941 through August 15, 1945; or 

f. As a U.S. documented merchant mariner with service aboard an oceangoing vessel operated by the 

Department of Defense, or its agents, from both June 25, 1950, through July 27, 1953, in Korean 

territorial waters and from August 5, 1964, through May 7, 1975, in Vietnam territorial waters, and who 

received a military commendation. 

State law no longer requires you to live in Washington for one year before you can get veterans' assistance. 

Your county may have set its own minimum state and county residency requirements. 

Dependent family members of a current member of the National Guard or armed forces reserves deployed to 

serve in an armed conflict may also qualify for assistance if you meet the eligibility criteria. 

How Do I Apply For Veterans’ Assistance Fund? 

In most counties, the fund is administered by one or more veterans' service organizations (VSO) such as VFW, 

American Legion, or D.A.V. Each county has its own plan. Where and how to apply varies. To find out how to 

apply in your county, call the county government main office. Ask for the person who has the Veterans

PEARLS Support For Veterans 

The Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS) is a community-integrated program to treat older 

adults with disabilities who also have minor depression, including veterans age 55+; their spouses, widows, and 

domestic partners; and ADS-funded case management clients. The program is an outgrowth of a five-year 

research project conducted in collaboration with the UW Health Promotion Research Center, which showed 

PEARLS home-based depression management counseling significantly reduced depression symptoms and 

improved health status in chronically medically ill older adults with minor depression. PEARLS counseling 

supplements—without competing— with other services for veterans. For more information, including brochures

HERO (Heroes Employment Reintegration Opportunity) 

King County Council offers an internship program to help veterans reintegrate into the civilian job market and 

to tap the skills and knowledge of veterans living in King County. The HERO (Heroes Employment Reintegration 

Opportunity) program is a competitive selection process open to any military veteran who meets King County 

Veteran's Program (KCVP) qualifications. Participants receive an hourly wage for 30 hours of work per week for 

six months. To better ensure his or her success, each intern will be matched to a King County employee who is 

also a veteran and provided with a comprehensive support plan, including connections to other community 

resources for veterans. During and after their six-month stint, HERO participants receive one-on-one assistance 

in writing their resume and searching for employment and get help applying for King County job openings for 

which they qualify. The hero program started in January 2013 and is projected to run through mid-2014, with 

about a dozen interns participating in each six-month session. If you are interested in applying to the HERO

Applications must be postmarked by May 31, 2013.

Late applications NOT accepted. 

Limit of one application per household 

Applications MUST be signed

ELIGIBILITY: 60+ years of age (55+ for Native Am/Alaskan); resident King County, income at or below 185% 

Federal Poverty Level.

NOTE: Due to the large number of applicants and an inadequate level of funding, there are not enough vouchers

be given to applicants who did not receive vouchers in 2012. Based on prior year’s data, only approximately onehalf 

(50%) of applicants can expect to receive vouchers in 2013.

advance their career, and anyone who wants to improve their communication or leadership skills should come 

and see how our club can help! At each meeting we practice communication and leadership skills in a variety of 

ways. At a typical meeting, members deliver prepared speeches, practice impromptu speaking during a "Table 

Topics" session, and offer positive and constructive evaluations and feedback. Members take turns leading the 

various aspects of the meetings, and work from the Toastmasters self-paced educational manuals. The group 

meets every Thursday from Noon – 1 PM in Room 4096 of the Seattle Municipal Tower, 700 5 th Ave., Seattle WA.
