<strong>Road</strong> Collision Facts - Cork<br />

• 559 people have been killed in road crashes in Cork over the period<br />

1996 to 2010<br />

• 1 in every 10 road deaths in Ireland occurred in Cork<br />

• 2,239 people were seriously injured in Cork over the period 1996 to<br />

2010<br />

• 2 out of every 10 deaths in Cork over the period were car drivers<br />

• 1 in 5 deaths was a pedestrian & over a third of these deaths were<br />

over 65 years of age<br />

• Almost a third of road deaths were aged 17 to 24, but...........

• A quarter of deaths were males aged 17<br />

to 24<br />

• 17 to 24 year olds are about four times<br />

• 17 to 24 year olds are about four times<br />

more likely to be killed in excessive speed<br />

collisions in Cork compared to the rest of<br />

• Overall a quarter of fatalities are a result of inappropriate or<br />

excessive speed<br />

• This rises to two thirds of fatalities for single vehicle collisions<br />

• Shockingly, 1 in 5 car drivers killed in Cork were not using a seatbelt<br />

& is still a problem<br />

• 1 in 5 deaths occurred during the evening rush hour (4pm to 7pm)<br />

• ¾ of fatalities occurred outside built up areas

• In 2011 Cork went in the opposite direction to the national trend with<br />

a 50% increase in fatalities. 27 lives were lost in Cork City and<br />

County an increase of nine deaths compared to the previous year.
