The first question that people always ask is, “why does your 

column have such a high upper temperature limit compared 

to everyone else?” The technical answer is our proprietary 

bonding process called Engineered Self Cross-Linking (ESC). 

By carefully fractionating our base polymer, and using 

aggressive cross-linking catalysts, we produce a column that 

resists thermal degradation.What this means to you is that 

Zebron is so stable, most of the time it isn’t the polymer that 

breaks down, but the polyimide coating on the outside of the 

column.

To ensure that all Z-Guards are the highest possible quality, 

we individually test each one! The columns are attached to 

a reference Zebron ZB-5 column and are tested using our 

specially designed QC mix. We carefully monitor activity, bleed, 

and stability. This way, we are able to say with confidence that 

Z-Guards will provide the low activity and high quality your 

methods require. 

Z-Guard Columns will trap non-volatile residues and prevent 

them from contaminating your expensive analytical column. 

When you must cut the end off the guard column to remove 

contaminant buildup, the integrity of your analytical column 

remains intact. The fused silica tubing of the guard column is 

without stationary phase and deactivated to provide minimal 

peak distortion and good wettability for polar as well as 

nonpolar compounds. The lifetime of your analytical column 

can be significantly increased by the use of a guard column. 

Many analysts also use the guard column as a “retention 

gap” to improve peak shape and quantitation. These 

benefits are especially enhanced when polarity 

mismatches between solvent and stationary phase 

can’t be avoided, or injection techniques like splitless, 

direct or on-column distort peak shape and reduce 

sensitivity and quantitative accuracy. The improvement 

in analytical results and extended column lifetimes 

makes the use of a guard column or retention gap a 

smart idea indeed!

Guardian columns have the 5m or 10m guard built 

directly into the analytical column in one continuous 

length of tubing. Unlike traditional guard columns, which 

are known to be difficult to seal and prone to leaking 

after normal column maintenance, the Guardian 

system provides the same inert column protection, 

but eliminates the possibility of leaks. 

The Guardian system is excellent for environmental 

samples that rapidly degrade GC column performance 

such as EPA method 8270. The Guardian system 

allows routine column maintenance to be performed 

without worrying about creating leaks or having 

to update retention times when the column is cut. 

The “worry-free” aspect of the Guardian system 

makes it an essential add on to every Zebron ZB-
