LIFE AND MONEY WITH PHIL LENAHAN©
www.VeritasFinancialMinistries.com
In today’s Gospel, we read, “This is my commandment:
love one another as I love you” (Jn. !5:12). The love we
have for God must be reflected in the love we have for
those around us. A steward of Providence recognizes
the importance of cultivating a generous spirit as a
way of reflecting that love.
ADULT CHILDREN
It is important that adult children, those who are out
of school and most probably are working, register
with us as a separate person. The registration forms
supply us with information not on the parent’s records.
It will aid us in preparing for a wedding or for
issuing sponsor papers for Confirmation or Baptism.
The parent’s records are not up to date with information
about their children.
We ask these young adults to please obtain a registration
form and fill it out. Parents, remind your children
that they must do so. Thank you for your assistance.
PRAYER OF THE WEEK
Grant, almighty God,
that we may celebrate with heartfelt devotion these
days of joy,
which we keep in honor of the risen Lord,
and that what we relive in remembrance
we may always hold to in what we do.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the
Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
WHITE ELEPHANT NEWS
It is that time of the year again where I am asking you
to consider donating your unwanted items for our
White Elephant Sale which is held during our annual
festival in August. The money raised from this event
helps our school to thrive and is a major and important
event. The gross income from the White Elephant
sale for the last three years have been $11,000 plus in
2009, $13,000 plus in 2010, and $12,000 plus in
2011. As you can see your donations are very important
and there is much truth in the statement that one
man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Unfortunately, we are not equipped to accept your
drop off donations until our school session is over for
the summer. PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF YOUR
ITEMS AT THIS TIME. For the past several years the
downstairs of our school has been the drop off and
sorting/cleaning site for the White Elephant Sale. We
MUST wait until school has let out for the year before
we are able to accept your donations. Due to the proposed
renovations at our school building our drop off
site may have to be moved. The dates, times, and area
for drop offs will be announced shortly. Until that
time, please continue to hold onto your donations.
They are greatly needed and appreciated.
Should you have any questions, please contact
Elaine Barlow at 412‐480‐2425. Thank you.
GRAB BAGS
The Grab Bag Booth at the Festival survives due to the
donations of our friends and parishioners. All of our
Grab Bags are put together with items age appropriate
from these donations. The Grab Bags are made for
boys and girls aged one to twelve. Our biggest challenge
each year is to provide Grab Bags for the older
ten to twelve aged boys and girls. If you work for a
company who advertise on items which are age appropriate
for this age group we desperately need your
donations. Each of the last three years we have been
blessed with sleeves of hats from the Pittsburgh Pirates
and Bobble Heads. Without these donations, we
would be without age appropriate items. We also received
a gift of over l00 Beanie Babies for the younger
childrens bags. PLEASE. We would like to start our
bags early this year and would appreciate any and all
donations you may have for our Grab Bags. These donations
can be left at our Rectory Office and I will be
sure to get to them right away. Should you have any
questions, please call Elaine Barlow at 412‐480‐2425.
WHITE ELEPHANT HELP
If you can donate any of your time to receiving, fixing,
cleaning or sorting donated items through June, July
and into the Festival in August we really need your
help. Please call Elaine Barlow at 412‐480‐2425.

MORE FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS NEXT WEEK!

In the last few years, through better catechesis, the parishioners of Holy Trinity are finally started to accept
the Sacrament of Anointing as the help of God and his Church that it is truly intended to be. Participation has definitely
increased. Yet, last year an elderly woman walked into church on the day we were anointing and she was
struggling with a walker and had a terrific cough. When asked whether or not she would like to be anointed that
morning, she said “Oh no, that’s for them sick people!”
Seriously, the fact of the matter is that the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is probably one of the most
misunderstood sacraments. Most people are unaware of the graces available from the sacrament and, unfortunately,
many people still think of it as the Extreme Unction that a person receives on his or her deathbed. This is simply not
the case, so the hope is that this flyer will answer the question:
Who should be anointed?
The sacrament of anointing is intended for those who are in danger of death or are seriously ill. But, it is also
for those who are awaiting or recovering from critical surgery; the elderly who are notably weakened and dealing
with the debilitating effects of aging, even if no serious illness exists. The sacrament is also intended for those dealing
with a major chronic ailment like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or
multiple sclerosis; those battling serious mental illness; or sick children who have achieved sufficient maturity to understand
the nature of the sacrament and desire to receive it.
The sacrament of anointing can be repeated if the person, while suffering the same illness, takes a turn for
the worse. It can also be repeated if the person develops a new illness; if the person recovers and then relapses; or if
an elderly or chronically ill person wishes to receive the sacrament on an annual or biannual basis (Canon 1004).
A LITTLE HISTORY - The Sacrament of Anointing is one of the church’s seven sacraments. It is one of the two
sacraments of healing, along with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The other two groupings are the Sacraments of
Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation) and the Sacraments of Commitment (Marriage and Holy Orders).
Like all the sacraments, Holy Anointing was instituted by Christ during his earthly ministry. It is alluded to in
Mark, but is recommended to the faithful promulgated by James the Apostle and a cousin of Jesus. (Mark 6:13; Jas.
5:14-15) The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) says: “The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and
imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace
and fortitude.” (CCC 1520)
The sacrament’s name has changed over time. Where it was once called extreme unction, which means “the
last anointing”, and has been referred to as part of the “last rites”, it is now properly called “the anointing of the
sick.” But even from the earliest times, the sacrament of the anointing of the sick was cherished among Christians,
not only in immediate danger of death, but even at the beginning sign of danger from illness or old age. A sermon of
Caesar of Arles from around the year A.D. 500 contains the following: “As often as some infirmity overtakes a man,
let him who is ill receive the body and blood of Christ; let him humbly and in faith ask the presbyters (priests) for
blessed oil, to anoint his body, so that what was written may be fulfilled in him: ‘Is anyone among you sick? Let him
bring in the presbyters, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil; and the prayer of faith will save the sick
man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he be in sins, they will be forgiven him....See to it brethren, that whoever
is ill hasten to the church, both that he will receive health of body and will merit to obtain forgiveness of sins.”
WHY SHOULD YOU RECEIVE? - Anointing is intended to confer the grace of the Holy Spirit upon the Christian
who is facing a serious illness or the difficulties associated with old age. Neither the prayers nor the oil is a magical
healing potion that guarantees physical recovery. The sacrament may improve a person’s physical condition, but it is
most concerned with the person’s spiritual well-being. It assures the sick person of God’s continued presence, helps
the person bear their trials, strengthens the person against temptation, provides the forgiveness of sins, and prepares
the person for safe passage from life on earth to life in heaven.

SEMI-ANNUAL
Holy Trinity Parish
Sacrament of Anointing
AT ALL MASSES the weekend of May 19 and 20
The power of the Holy Spirit can help strengthen you in your struggle with serious
illness or the difficulties associated with old age. Will you turn down Jesus’ gift to you?
Read the reverse side of this flyer to see if you are eligible to receive this sacrament.
If you would like to partake in the celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick or
if you can bring someone who can benefit from the sacrament, please call Kathy Butler of our
Family Life and Social Ministry, Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm at 412-787-
2140 ext.116. She can make any special arrangements. You can also just let us know when you
arrive at Mass the weekend of May 19 and 20 that you would like to be anointed.
The liturgical actions - The two ritual actions involved with the sacrament of anointing are the
laying on of hands and the anointing with sacred oil. The priest will come to you.
The laying on of hands - The priest lays both of his hands side-by-side, palms down, on the top of
the head of the person in silence for several moments to call down the Holy Spirit.
The anointing - The priest anoints both the forehead and the hands of the person with blessed oil.
in the Sign of the Cross.
BY THE WAY… Let us know if someone in your household is unable to attend Mass anymore. It is our great
joy to be able to bring communion to any of our shut-ins on a regular basis. Please contact us if you know of
anybody in that situation. Remember that if you are planning any kind of surgery in the coming months, it is better
to be anointed now rather than gambling that you’ll be able to receive the sacrament the day before your surgery.
Also, similarly, in the case of an upcoming surgery you can ask a priest to anoint you after any Mass.
And please, if someone in your household becomes ill for any reason, especially from an illness that
brings with it even any slight danger of death, either immediate or over time, let us know about it. It will stay
confidential if you wish. Our families have depended on the Church to guide them on the journey of life for years
and years. Don’t wait until the last minute to help a friend or relative prepare for that final journey in their waning
months or years. Let us bring the comfort of Christ to them when they need it the most — NOW. Not at the last
minute. Any single, married, widowed, divorced or remarried Catholic can be anointed.
If the person has already passed away, the Church teaches that a prayer of commendation should be offered instead
of anointing. If it is uncertain whether the person has died or not, the sacrament should be administered.

Sixth Sunday of Easter
Prayer to Go Forth
and Bear Fruit
Ever-living God,
your Son Jesus laid down his life
for ours,
and called us not slaves, but friends.
Help us to honor his sacrifice
by going forth and bearing fruit
that endures,
that gladdens people’s hearts,
and nourishes them
for right thinking and action.
Give us sure hope in the Resurrection.
We ask this through our Lord
Jesus Christ,
your Son, who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever. Amen.
Joy and Friendship: The Final Commandment
Today’s Readings: Acts 10:25 – 26, 34 – 35, 44 – 48; Psalm 98:1,
2 – 3, 3 – 4 (See 2b); 1 John 4:7–10; John 15:9 –17. Today Jesus
tells his friends his purpose in coming: “that my joy may be
in you, and that your joy may be complete” (15:11). Because
Jesus set his eyes set on joyful loving, he endured the cross;
the Passion wasn’t redemptive simply because it was painful.
Suffering and joy seem like strange companions, but Jesus
promises we can both suffer and be joyous.
We may not think of ourselves as being God’s delight,
but that seems to be what Jesus says. We are more often
filled with doubt or self-recrimination, and that must grieve
the heart of God. Furthermore, Jesus calls those gathered for
his Last Supper not servants but friends (15:15), and we
know from the beloved Lenten story of raising Lazarus what
friendship with him means. It gives us the freedom to speak
as plainly as Martha did (“there will be a stench!”). It motivates
us to act not from fear as a slave might, but from
eagerness to please a friend.
Indeed, Jesus does not ask for brilliance, daring exploits,
or superhuman feats. Instead, he commands, “Abide in my
love,” enjoying a restful peace and security. His commandment
is not to jump through hoops, trying to please, but to
love each other. Not that it’s easy. Loving can be fraught
with difficulty. But it bears eternal fruit.

This Week at Home
Monday, May 14
Feast of Saint Matthias
Today’s Readings: Acts 1:15 –17, 20 – 26; Psalm 113:1 – 2, 3 – 4,
5 – 6, 7– 8 (8); John 15:9 –17. All we know about Matthias is
found in today’s reading from Acts: he is chosen by prayer
and by lots to replace Judas, taking up the mission Jesus gave
the apostles. We also are called to walk with the Lord Jesus
and to witness to his Resurrection.
Tuesday, May 15
Saint Isidore (1070 –1130)
Today’s Readings: Acts 16:22 – 34; Psalm 138:1– 2ab, 2cde – 3,
7c – 8 (7c); John 16:5 –11. Born in Madrid, Saint Isidore,
whose optional memorial we may celebrate today, was a simple
peasant who lived an ordinary life, working for a large
landowner. He was known for generosity to those poorer than
himself. One of the few canonized saints who was married,
Isidore and his wife Maria are patron saints of farmers. At
meals today, give thanks for farmers who grow our food.
Wednesday, May 16
How Could We Ever Repay?
Today’s Readings: Acts 17:15, 22 — 18:1; Psalm 148:1– 2,
11–12, 13, 14 (Alleluia); John 16:12 –15. During the tragic
shooting in Tucson, Arizona, in January of 2011, some made
heroic efforts to protect others, and died doing so. Imagine
being a survivor whose spouse or friend died saving your
life. You would want to live in a way that honored the person
and the gift. Christ gave his life to save ours. The Spirit of
truth in today’s Gospel can show us how to make some small
repayment in our lives.
If Celebrating the Ascension Today
Today’s Readings: Acts 1:1–11; Psalm 47:2 – 3, 6 –7, 8 – 9 (6);
Ephesians 1:17– 23 or 4:1–13; Mark 16:15 – 20. Today’s solemnity
is not about Jesus’ absence or about saying good bye, but
rather his continued presence among us. Ephesians 1:23
explains that Christ fills the universe, so we must learn to
expect him at every turn. It’s a great day for a picnic or procession,
burning incense, and celebratory music.
If Celebrating the Ascension Next
Sunday:
Today’s Readings: Acts 18:1– 8; Psalm 98:1, 2 – 3ab, 3cd – 4
(Alleluia); John 16:16 – 20. Today’s reading from Acts gives us
a fascinating window on Paul’s missionary work: the people
he met, how he supported himself, his frustrations, and his
successes with those who “came to believe.” Coming to
believe ever more deeply is a lifelong process. Where are you
in that process this year?
Friday, May 18
Saint John I
Today’s Readings: Acts 18:9 –18; Psalm 47:2 – 3, 4 – 5, 6 –7
(8a); John 16:20 – 23. Pope John, whose optional memorial we
may celebrate today, served from 523 to 526. He walked a
difficult line between his own orthodoxy and Theodoric,
ruler of Italy, who embraced the Arian heresy. Theodoric sent
him to Constantinople to persuade the Byzantine Emperor to
soften his harsh treatment of Arians in that region. On his
return John was imprisoned at Ravenna, where he died.
Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel would have given comfort:
“So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your
hearts will rejoice” (16:22).
Joy after Sorrow
Today’s Readings: Acts 18:23 – 28; Psalm 47:2 – 3, 8 – 9, 10
(8a); John 16:23b – 28. In today’s Gospel, Jesus promises his
disciples that joy will eventually eclipse suffering, just as the
joy of a child coming into the world replaces the pain of
childbirth. He says, “On that day you will ask nothing of me”
(16:23). But in the meantime, we will need to ask for help,
and he invites us to ask the Father in his name. “Ask and you
will receive . . . ” (24).
