Solution Overview
Deduplication
UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHALLENGES
Industry-standard backup practices inherently create large amounts of
duplicate data because the backup system repeatedly copies the same data
to secondary storage. This makes it increasingly difficult to complete
backups on time and increases the pressure to manage the storage,
protection, backup, and recovery of data throughout an organization. This
requires efficiency improvements in staff, infrastructure, and processes.
The proliferation
of duplicate data has pushed
organizations to rethink how
they back up and find new ways
to optimize storage capacity
utilization. With information
growing 50-60% annually, the
cost of managing and protecting
data rises continuously in spite
of limited IT budgets. For this
reason, data deduplication is
a key component of modern
storage strategies. By eliminating
redundant data, companies can
keep more data online longer at
significantly lower costs.
FALCONSTOR SOLUTION
FalconStor® Deduplication technology was designed to conquer the
challenges of expansive data stores by eliminating duplicate data across the
backup infrastructure. Data deduplication reduces capacity requirements,
which conserves physical space and energy usage, minimizes operational
costs, and allows companies to retain more data online, longer.
BUSINESS VALUE
FalconStor Deduplication solutions bring immediate cost savings by allowing
you to use less disk space to store backup data. Lasting benefits and cost savings
continue over time due to the unique attributes of FalconStor technology:
Global Deduplication. Islands of redundant data across an enterprise
compromise storage space. FalconStor Deduplication technology provides a
shared global deduplication repository that spans multiple application
sources, environments, and storage protocols, maximizing space savings.
Backup data from any node is deduplicated against all data in the repository,
for true global deduplication. This improves and accelerates data restores,
making it easier to meet or exceed service level agreements (SLAs).
High Performance. To minimize backup windows and ensure maximum
efficiency for applications and production systems, high performance is a must.
FalconStor Deduplication solutions provide industry-leading performance levels
that bring your production systems back online faster. FalconStor Deduplication
technology supports the latest high-speed SAN storage protocols, achieving
single node backup speeds of over 1.6GB/s (5.8 TB/hour) per node. Unique
read-ahead technology provides fast restore, even from deduplicated tapes.
FalconStor Deduplication technology can sustain the fastest deduplication
speeds in the industry, ranging from 28TB/hour to 40TB/hour.
Keeping it under control
Flexibility. Not all data is alike; some
types yield better deduplication results
than others. With FalconStor
Deduplication you can choose from
any combination of four deduplication
methods to align deduplication
processes with business goals and
unique requirements.
• Inline deduplication minimizes
storage requirements. It is ideal for
small storage configurations or
environments where immediate
replication is needed.
• Post-process deduplication occurs
after backup completes, therefore it
can be scheduled to run at any time.
A recommended best practice is to
leverage post-process deduplication
to minimize the initial backup time,
and switch to inline deduplication for
subsequent backups.
• Concurrent deduplication starts
when the first set of records is written
so that it runs concurrently with
backup. Deduplication engines work
immediately, making optimal use of
available CPU resources.
• No dedupe is for data that does not
deduplicate effectively, such as
pre-compressed data or data
exported to tape. Selectively turning
off deduplication saves CPU cycles,
helping you focus time and resources
on data that provides the highest
deduplication ratios and value.
Scalability. Organizations need a
deduplication solution that works
today and is built for tomorrow. Some
systems can only expand with a forklift
upgrade, forcing IT teams to purchase
additional equipment and capacity.
With FalconStor Deduplication, you can
scale capacity to the backup target disk
pool and build backup architectures
around deduplication. Repositories can
start small and grow through clustering
and storage expansion without the
need for disruptive replacements,
saving production and staff time.
High Availability (HA). Because a
consolidated deduplication repository
includes large amounts of vital data, it
cannot be vulnerable to single points
of failure. FalconStor Deduplication
offers advanced HA backup nodes to
enable failover for ongoing recovery.
HA cluster deduplication nodes
operate independently from backup
nodes, enabling you to add nodes to
meet tight backup windows and
long-term retention requirements.
Secure and Safe. Offsite replication is a
must to ensure data protection and
overall peace-of-mind. FalconStor
Deduplication includes WAN-optimized
replication with compression and
encryption to minimize network
bandwidth needs and safeguard data
integrity during transport.
Tape Integration. To minimize the
impact on backup procedures,
FalconStor Deduplication technology
directly integrates with physical tape.
Advanced tape management
functionality includes automated tape
caching, multi-tape exports, and tape
stacking to simplify operations,
decrease media consumption, and
shrink tape handling costs.
