TEXTBOOK: American Heart Association's - 2006
HEARTSAVER FIRST AID with CPR & AED -
STUDENT WORKBOOK
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to review the American Heart Association's Heartsaver First Aid
information. In addition to the First Aid Review, the course reviews Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation information. The course is NOT designed
to in any way, "certify" students as First Aid, CPR, or AED providers. Rather, the intent is to
provide the most current information available in a review format. To gain certification, students
will need to contact a Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor, to schedule a time for the student to
practice, and demonstrate those skill required for certification.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:
This course has been designed for "online" self-study. The following methods should be used by
each student as you work your way through the assignment, exam, and discussion issues of each
section, during a three-week time frame. Each week will begin at 8:00 am on Monday morning
of the week and end on the following Sunday evening at Midnight.
1. (FIRST WEEK OF SECTION)
Read assigned pages for the section from the "Text". Then, answer the questions
from the text for the assigned section by way of email to instructor.
2. (SECOND WEEK OF SECTION)
Using the information given in the textbook, answer the Section Exam questions
found in the "COURSE DOCUMENTS" section of the Black Board for each
section assigned.
3. (THIRD WEEK OF THE SECTION)
Use the "DISCUSSION BOARD" to respond to each "Topic" during the time
frame for each of the sections.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completing this course, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the information in and "Standards" of First Aid,
CPR and AED as set by the American Heart Association.
2. Be prepared to practice and demonstrate skills required for certification in the
areas of study, (for those seeking certification).
COURSE TOPICS/UNITS:
Refer to Course Schedule Section of this document.
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
Students will demonstrate, through the written exams and discussions, the knowledge of
the materials covered during the course.
GRADING PLAN:
Points will be awarded for each set of unit questions, discussion responses, and exams.
The scores for each of these are available by looking in the "Grade Center" portion of
Blackboard. There are a total of 243 points available from all of these assignments. Grades for
this course will be based on the percentage of correct answers given on the section questions and
exams along with the number of points awarded for the discussion board responses.

EVALUATION:
The total of all scores earned from the assignments, exams and discussions will be added
together. This total score will then be divided by the 243 points that are possible, giving the total
percentage score. The percentage score will be used to calculate the final grade for the class.
**SPECIAL NOTE: Each set of section questions, section exams, and discussion questions will
be available for ONLY the week that it is assigned. IF THE WORK IS NOT DONE WHILE
THE ASSIGNMENT/EXAM/ DISCUSSION IS "AVAILABLE", THERE WILL BE NO
CREDIT GIVEN FOR THOSE POINTS. NO MAKE UPS WILL BE ALLOWED!
GRADING:
Using the points awarded from the assignments, discussion responses, and unit exams,
the following grade scale will be used to calculate the final grade for this course:
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
93% - 100% = A (225 points earned = 92.5 %)
85% - 92% = B (206 points earned = 84.7 %)
75% - 84% = C (182 points earned = 74.8 %)
60% - 74% = D (145 points earned = 59.6%)
59% and BELOW = F (144 points earned = 59.2 %) - or below
Due to the "online" format of this course, the following "PARTICIPATION
REQUIREMENTS" will be followed:
Documentation of "signing in" will be done by the instructor's ability to recognize each
time the student has entered the course on Black Board. The MINIMUM times that a student
will be required to enter the course is:
ONCE EACH WEEK OF CLASS: per the assignment schedule -- Each assignment,
exam, and discussion question WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR A 0NE WEEK PERIOD OF TIME
AFTER WHICH THEY "GO AWAY"!
COURSE COMPONENT SPECIFICS:
Refer to the "EVALUATION" section above.
STUDENT DISCIPLINE POLICY:
Pursuant to the FSCC Student Code of Conduct (see college catalog), a progressive
disciplinary system will be applied for violations of the college standards for student conduct:
1. Verbal warning, 2. Formal written counseling stipulating the consequences, 3. Enactment
of consequences, and 4. Dismissal from the course.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Academic Integrity will be maintained by all students enrolled in this course. Breaches
of academic integrity will include, but not be limited to: Plagiarism or "Cheating" in any form.
Failure on the part of a fellow student to inform the instructor of such acts know to them, would
also be considered as a breach of academic integrity. The immediate consequence of such a
breach (first occasion) will be a grade of "0" for that assignment AND the student will be placed
on probation for the duration of his/her studies in any Nursing / Allied Health courses. The
incident will be reported to the Director of Nursing / Allied Health and the Dean of Students at
FSCC, who may invoke other consequences as set by FSCC policy. A second occasion, during
the student's studies in the Nursing / Allied Health Department, will result in the dismissal of the
student from the department.
