Don’t forget the Mothers Day Stall tomorrow 9.00 am - 10.30 am.
Next week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will take the NAPLAN tests. Every student
enrolled at Alma in those grades should be here for the tests. Please ensure the children
have had a good night’s sleep prior to the tests, a hearty breakfast and are at school on
time. The tests run over three days—Tuesday 15th (Language Conventions and Writing),
Wednesday 16th ( Reading) and Thursday 17th May (Numeracy). There will be a “catch
up” day on Friday 18th for any child who was absent due to illness. If you have any queries
about the NAPLAN process or arrangements, please contact the school.
This term, Alma Public School is taking part in the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion.
Please read the information inside our newsletter for details.
Our next P&C meeting is next Tuesday night. There will be a short AGM followed by an
ordinary meeting. I cannot encourage you enough to be involved in the P&C.
At a P&C meeting earlier this year there was a discussion held about the annual school
concert. Staff had expressed serious concerns about the amount of classroom time that is
lost in third term in preparation for the concert. I took those concerns to a meeting of the
P&C for further discussion. The result is that in 2012 we will NOT have a stand alone
school concert. Instead, classes/stages will each present a quality item at Presentation
Day. While this will extend our presentation activities, it will certainly give valuable learning
time back to teachers and students in Term 3.
This Friday is the Barrier Cross Country. Our best wishes go to those students who will be
representing Alma Public School. I am sure that I will hear stories back about great
sportsmanship and students of ours rising to the challenge. Good luck to you all.
Our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden is looking fabulous. Sandwich Hopcraft has
been working with each of the Year 3-6 classes and Mrs DeGoumois has been visiting
other schools with SAKGs who are a bit ahead of us. Between them, they have lots of
ideas and plans and they are enthusing the staff with their passion for the project.
Applications are now open for Year 4 students who wish to apply for entry to
an Opportunity Class (gifted and talented) in 2013 (in Year 5). The nearest class is in
Orange, but there may also be an opportunity to apply for i-extend which is a virtual
classroom for gifted and talented students.

This year you will receive a sticker card.
Each time you go shop at Woolworths
you can request one
Earn & Learn sticker
for every $10 you spend.
Attach your stickers to the Earn & Learn sticker
card and when your card is full, return it to
school and place it in the collection box in the
office foyer.
More cards are available from the administration
office or Miss Marsh.
The more full cards we
collect….the more great learning
resources we can redeem!!

There has been an outbreak of head lice
at the school. Head lice are very
common so there is no need to be
alarmed, however they should be treated
quickly to prevent them from spreading:
We are asking that all parents examine
their child’s hair and look for the following
signs:
• Persistent scratching, particularly
behind the ears and the nape of the neck
accompanied by a red rash,
• Tiny silver white eggs at the base of
the hair shaft,
• Small pale brown lice. You may wish
to use a magnifying glass and fine
toothed comb under strong light to help
identify lice.
Any items which may harbour lice such as
bed linen, towels, hats and combs should
be washed in hot soapy water. To
prevent head lice in the future, all family
members should avoid sharing items
such as clothing, brushes or hats from
each other or from friends.
Please make an effort to stop the cycle of
infestation by checking your child’s hair.
