CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE 

At the outset, let me wish all our members a very Happy 

and Prosperous New Year 2013. 

I have many ticklish memories of 1970 when World Expo 

was held in Osaka (Japan). I vividly remember how the 

city had transformed itself for the event. Nothing less than 

a bride preparing for the big day!! Several years had 

gone into preparation. And when it started, it attracted 

millions of visitors, nationally and internationally. I had never 

seen such a human congregation. It was indeed 

amazing to see people queuing outside pavilions of 

various nations to enlighten themselves about culture and 

heritage. It took me around five days to go through just 

important countries. 

Dubai was part of the Trucial States at that time. In business 

meetings, it was not unusual to expect principals, at least 

in Japan, to bring an Atlas and ask us to guide them as to 

where exactly Dubai was located. UAE was formed in 

1971. And with that the nation embarked upon a flight 

which is the envy of the world. 

Dubai is a candidate city for World Expo 2020 which 

when held will keep on attracting world attention for six 

long months. And several decades thereafter. There are 

five candidates to host Expo 2020 - Dubai (UAE), 

Ayutthaya (Thailand), Ekaterinburg (Russia), 

Izmir (Turkey), and São Paulo (Brazil). Following a vote by 

the 160 BIE member nations, the winning city will be 

announced in November 2013. And until then we all 

have to create such a global atmosphere so that Dubai 

bags the event. 

Dubai is one of the most hyper-connected cities in the 

world and an absolutely ace choice for holding a world class 

exposition. A country hosting over 200 nationalities is 

always a mini expo. It's theme "Connecting Minds, 

Creating the Future" is so aptly thought of and clearly 

manifests the Vision and Mission of His Highness Sheikh 

Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and 

Vice President of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Delightful experience with Micky 

Mehta - Thanks to the club 

I used to see Micky Mehta on the TV with lots of 

celebrities in Bombay and thanks to India Club, 

we got the opportunity to meet him in person. 

Meeting him and listening to him was a real 

delight for me. He has a very practical 

meaningful attitude for life and I gained a lot 

from him. Spending 2 days with him and 

learning his exercises in the water was great too. 

Best Letter 

His positive vibration with all the India Club 

members was amazing. His teaching will be with 

me throughout my life. According to him, be 

positive, practical and most importantly, do one 

good deed everyday and be focussed in life in 

whatever we do. Three cheers for him! I wish he 

can make more trips to the club and we all can 

benefit with his mind and body knowledge.

Eid Celebration – Qawali Night 

When I heard about “Eid Celebration – 

Qawali Night”, I just could not resist 

from attending, as this was something 

I cannot afford to miss. I have always 

noted that India Club has the art of 

giving the best shot at any festive 

events, from “Holi” to “Onam” and from 

“Navratri” to “EID Celebrations”. 

The entire ambience was changed to 

suit the theme of music. Pleasant 

weather, Outdoor setting under the 

open sky, along with great music took 

me to a different world, enabling my 

mind to totally unwind. Toshi’s performance 

was at its best, from “Raag” to 

“Sufi”. The music filled the air with so 

much of energy, that the guests were 

on the floor dancing to the rhythm, 

enjoying every beat of the music. 

A big thanks to India club for all their 

efforts and initiative to keep us 

connected to our roots. I look forward 

to many more such events, as such 

musical events enhance our love for 

music & bring synergy of both body & 

mind.

Two great nights of Dandiya 

Dhamaka! 

The eagerly awaited, the most 

popular dance festival - Dandiya Night 

was amazing! It was awesome to see 

everyone dressed in colourful costumes 

- ghagra cholis with mirror work, etc. 

All were mesmerized by the dancers 

spinning to the choreographed tunes 

with the colourful dance sticks! Each 

one was in their own groups, enjoying 

the fun, dancing to the latest re-mixes 

and beats. The bright lights, the ethnic 

wear, the ethnic jewelry, the loud music 

added to the enthusiasm of the 

crowds. 

It was enthralling to see the youngsters 

dance to the beat of the fusion music. 

A troupe dancing to the traditional 

Garba dance took the cake. 

One and all enjoyed the evening.

MOHAN VALRANI 

– The Action Man

A bright vision combined with the zeal and 

desire to fulfil his dreams has made Valrani cross 

many milestones in his fruitful life 

Mohan Valrani is the senior vice chairman of the Al 

Shirawi Group of Companies. Apart from being one of 

the most successful Indian businessmen in the UAE, 

Valrani is also actively involved in several philanthropic, 

community and social activities. He is a 

Founder-Trustee of the India Club and has been its 

Chairman twice in the past. Mohan Valrani is also a 

founder-member and is on the board of trustees of the 

Indian High School (IHS). 

Along with his fellow founder-trustees, it was Valrani’s 

vision and far-sightedness that led to the expansion of 

the India Club and took it to where it is today – one of 

the largest Indian clubs in the world. 

When Valrani first arrived in Dubai in 1966, India Club 

was located in small premises in Bur Dubai near the 

then customs office. Then the late and generous Ruler 

of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum 

granted a bigger plot of land for the new premises of 

India Club to be built at the spot where it is located 

now. “Since I was in the construction business, the 

community accorded me the responsibility of building 

the first phase of the new India Club premises. I was 

also the Chairman when the club moved to its present 

location,” said Valrani. 

So what was it that made these community leaders 

think of building an India club in Dubai? “When we 

first arrived here, we came as bachelors, so there was 

no sense of community as such. But as more and 

more families began arriving, the need for a 

community centre where these families could meet 

and socialise grew. So the club was started and then 

it just kept on growing. I am proud to say that many 

eminent personalities from both the UAE and India 

have visited our club and today it is one of the best 

Indian clubs outside India. We never imagined that a 

100,000 sq. ft. plot would be small for us. Our 

membership has grown from 100 to 2,500 and is still 

growing. We would have expanded further had it not 

been for the space constraint.” 

With all these achievements, India Club has 

established itself as an institution among the Indian 

community in Dubai, but isn’t it true that many former 

regulars now choose to go to other places for 

entertainment? “The fact that our membership keeps 

on growing speaks for itself. When the club was 

started, there was nowhere to go for families, no 

entertainment options. With this club, we developed 

community spirit and today as a community centre, 

we are very active. Several luminaries keep on visiting 

the club regularly and we also celebrate all the 

festivals with great gusto and enthusiasm. There are 

dedicated clubs for various nationalities in Dubai but 

no other club matches ours. But at the same time, 

times have changed. With the advent of new technology 

our best friend now is the iPad so there is not 

much time for socialising. 

Dubai has grown in all directions and many people 

have shifted to new Dubai. And the proof of the 

pudding lies in its eating. So we have to introduce the 

right facilities and create the right environment for 

more and more people to want to come to the club.” 

So is there any plan of expanding India Club? “Well, 

space is the keyword here. Expansion is on the cards 

but our main problem at the existing premises is the 

space constraint. The trustees are discussing this 

matter seriously and we feel that we need to start a 

branch in a new location preferably in new Dubai,” 

Valrani said with a touch of excitement. Given the fact 

that the youngsters need to drive the growth of the 

club, surely the trustee must be seeking their opinions 

too? “Today’s youngsters are more active and very 

quick to send their suggestions. And we receive so 

many e-mails with suggestions from members to 

improve the facilities. This ensures that our members 

are actively involved in whatever happens at their 

club.” In recent days, under the Chairmanship and 

guidance of Dr Ram Buxani, the club has launched 

several new initiatives. “True! Dr Buxani is doing 

an excellent job. He has introduced the business 

networking evenings, the Friday brunch and other 

fresh ideas. I think the club is on the right track.” 

Given that he and his companies have played such 

an important role in Dubai’s progress, how does 

Mohan Valrani envisage the future of Dubai? “Despite 

the ups and downs, Dubai has emerged as a 

world-class city. Today it is counted among the top 

three cities of Asia and the top 10 cities of the world. 

I see a very bright future for Dubai and feel that it will 

continue to grow in the years to come.”

Celebrations ‘2012 

Dance as if nobody is watching! It’s the 

time of the year for Dandiya and Garba! 

NAVRATRI DANDIYA DHAMAKA was celebrated 

with amazing grandeur by India Club on 15th 

October & 25th October 2012. Enchanting & 

Entertaining DJ Scorpio performed on 15th 

October ’12, while Dubai’s Hottest & Sizzling DJ - 

the winner of the Prestigious Masala Awards for 

Best Asian DJ - DJ Tushar performed on 25th 

October ‘12. The icing on the cake was a Dhol 

player, who entertained all on both the days. The 

Dhol Player was on the floor mingling with the 

crowd during the event. Traditional garba and 

dandiya dances were performed by the dance 

troupe from Maayavi Dance Drama Concepts on 

both the days. 

An overwhelming response indeed ! A record crowd 

of over 7,000 Members / Guests at the Dandiya 

Dhamaka Festivities on both days! Food courts 

served yummy Tandoori / Indian / Chinese Cuisine, 

thereby adding to the festive ambience. An exclusive 

food stall for Members fasting during Navratri, 

was also put up. 

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ram Buxani, 

Chairman, India Club and Mr. Nauman Ehasan, 

Head of Marketing, Britannia by lighting the 

traditional lamp. The entire décor and lighting 

created the right setting for the Navratri 

celebrations.

A two day exhibition was held on 5th & 6th 

October at the Mehfil hall to commemorate 

Gandhi Jayanti. 

On exhibit were the paintings of Bapuji, 

“Father of the Nation” done by a renowned 

artist from Mumbai Mr. Ashok Modi. 

The exhibition was inaugurated by

Mr. Bharatbhai Shah. Mr. Modi has a passion 

for sketching besides his profession.

Consulate General of India, Dubai.

India Club Annual Inter-State 

Badminton Tournament 2012 

The Annual India Club Inter State Badminton Tournament 

2012 (for Senior Members above 18 years) was conducted 

at the India Club from 16th October ’12 onwards. 

In all, 5 teams took part in the tournament. 

Each team consisted of six players; four lady players also 

participated in this event. The qualifying round was 

played on round robin basis. The final was played 

between Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. In the finals, 

Karnataka Team defeated Uttar Pradesh Team.

MICKEY MEHTA a leading Holistic Health Guru, 

for over 30 yrs, with successful 13 yrs old association 

with Femina Miss India, is an institution, Life 

coach, Philosopher, Author and has many Firsts 

to his credit in the Wellness Industry. He 

conducted two Workshops at the India Club 

Dubai, on the 29th and 30th of September. 

He started the Functional Workshop on a very 

energetic level, that mesmerized the members 

to soak in every word uttered by him. 

His Philosophy of being kind to yourself and to 

the workers, who help make your life easy at 

home, got everyone thinking. 

He demonstrated a few exercises and 

explained, how each one helped the various 

parts of the body. The evening ended with 

Meditation and a Q&A Session. 

Happy members left with a smile, but returned 

the next day for a Swimming Workshop. 

Members were given a brief on how physical 

activity, like walking or swimming help tone 

muscles. He advised to think positively, to 

reduce stress and achieve balance and 

harmony. Members proceeded to the 

swimming pool, where he made the members 

do the exercises. According to Mr. Mickey 

Mehta, age should never be categorized in 

number of years; accept the challenges by 

keeping your mind and body active and grow 

older gracefully. Regular Yoga helps keep the 

mind and body alert. Along with exercise, 

healthy food is important.

Vocal Touch – A Voice Workshop For Singers 

God respects me when I work; but God loves me 

when I sing. - Rabindranath Tagore 

A Voice Workshop was held on the 10th of November. This enjoyable 

and highly participatory session was designed to help Children and 

Adults to find their singing voice and to learn to project it with ease 

and confidence. 

Mr. Joseph Mora’s Vocal Coach and Choral Director, a qualified and 

experienced voice coach, began the session with Voice Warm-ups 

and Exercises. The Breathing Rap and the Breathing Exercises of Sips 

and Hisses was fun. The exercise for diction brought a lot of laughter 

with tongue twisters like “ Chester cheetah chews a chunk of cheap 

cheddar cheese” and “Give Papa a proper cup of coffee in a 

proper coffee cup”. This session is a step towards enabling our 

members learn the art of proper singing, by enriching their vocal 

skills, improving correct posture, implementing correct breathing 

techniques, refining diction, resulting in soul-stirring expressive 

singing.

Fresh Fruits for Better Health and Good Growth! 

It’s time we teach our children, the importance of 

consuming fresh fruits every day. 

The factory visit to Barakat on the 10th of November, was a 

step towards educating our children on the importance of 

fruits in their lives. The kids got an opportunity to see how 

nutritious fruit and vegetable juices were produced using 

no additives or preservatives, just the way you make them 

at home. The helpful team of professionals explained as to 

how the selected raw materials from around the world 

entered the preparation facility, and the end products 

maintained between 2 0 C and 4 0 C.

the laboratory staff 

tested every batch to 

ensure that the 

stringent standards are 

met. Moreover, the 

children got samples of 

fresh juices and freshly 

cut fruits. Let’s cultivate

Interview with Shobana 

Chandramohan 

Shobana Chandramohan is a very innovative 

and talented Entertainment Professional based 

in Dubai. A Singer par excellence, and an 

Emcee with a very witty and interactive style , 

she wins over the audience with her energy and 

positive attitude. With over 15 years of 

experience in the world of entertainment , 

in the last few years , Shobana has expanded 

her horizons beyond Dubai and has gone 

Global !! As a member of the India Club since 

the 90s, Shobana has conducted various 

events for the club over the years. 

Tell us about your journey of music. How and 

when it started ? 

School, college I was always there singing on 

the stage . I came to dubai in the 90s when 

there were 2 or 3 bands and I used to sing for 

them. 

How have things changed for a singer ? 

In the early days as a singer you were just 

expected to sing well but now it is much more 

demanding. Today so much importance is given 

to styling , looks, clothes, body language , 

audience interaction , connection , etc etc... 

How did you bring about so much of change in 

yourself and your performances ? 

I got to work in all forms of media. With TV came 

grooming, body language, and audience 

connection, with Radio it was wit, humour, voice 

modulation. I started bringing all these elements 

into my Live performances. I also enjoy dancing 

and getting others to join me as well. 

So how did you venture out of Dubai ? 

About 3 years ago, I did a dealer meet in Dubai 

for the TATA group from India and they invited 

me to perform at their international dealer meets 

– I did 7 or 8 exciting destinations in 1 year with 

them. 

What do you think is your main strength ? 

I am a good singer, strong on lyrics , people’s 

person, creative , witty , and also sensitive to 

family and relations. So I combined all this and 

created my own brand of entertainment - 

interactive singing for parties; unique ideas for 

weddings; fun concepts such as family 

introductions, games, couple interaction, TV style 

interviews of guests, shayari, comedy , karaoke, 

antakshari, special theme parties, 

Mehndi/sangeet songs, different approaches 

for corporate events. 

How many places have you performed ? 

Any special or favorite destinations ? 

I have performed in Bangkok, Phuket, 

Hua hin, Bali, Jakarta, Beijing, Mauritius, 

Langkawi, Istanbul , Lagos, Cape town, 

Hongkong, and also various places in India 

like Kolkata, Goa, Kerala, Chennai, Delhi, 

Nagpur, Gandhidham, Ahmedabad. 

My most special 

performance would be 

Beijing as it was my first 

international event and I 

actually sang on the great 

wall!! 

What are your future plans ? 

An album has been in the 

pipeline for too long, so

Karva Chauth festival was celebrated on 

the 2nd of November. 206 Ladies, 

adorned in complete finery of their 

wedding dress filled the Badminton 

Court, creating a beautiful pattern of 

colourful circles. 

The Puja started with the Karva 

Chauth Story and the collective 

singing by the women, as they 

performed the “feris”, passing their 

thalis around in circles, seven times. 

The Puja was followed by the Diya 

Painting Competition. As the 

Judges were selecting the 

winners, the ladies were singing 

and dancing to the popular 

Karva Chauth tunes. The ladies 

went home with lovely Prizes 

and Gift Hampers.

held on November 2, 2012. To 

ensure that the walk is more 

colourful, a Dhol player and some 

Bhangra dancers were brought 

along to walk with the team.

It’s a part of our tradition to respect and take good care of our 

elders who made us who we are. To ensure comfortable mobility 

of these Senior Citizens of the Club, we have now a golf cart in 

place, for their exclusive use within the Club.
