THE BIG GUY ARRIVES !
First Lady, Dawn and former First Lady, Linda Pahl, stand
next to the "Editorial Without Words" statue that they
helped carry into the Shrine Center! Potentate Dick Cassada
and Lady Dawn drove the 9‐foot statue in his pickup truck
back to CT from down South and delivered it to Sphinx
Shrine on Saturday, June 27th.
First Lady Linda helped kick off this Divan Ladies project in
her year (2007), and with the help of First Lady Alty Frink
last year, Lady Dawn is looking to bring the project to completion
within the year!
Be sure to be at Sphinx Shrine on Saturday, July 25th to see
the Grand Master of CT and his suite of officers commemorate
this statue being installed with a Cornerstone‐Laying
Ceremony!
This is a classic example of what we can all accomplish by
working hard toward a goal within Sphinx Shrine! The final
goal is in sight, and the Divan Ladies are asking that we all
get our donations in to help reach the $20,000 goal that will
not only enable the statue to be put in place, but to complete
the walkway with all the commemorative pavers!
Potentate's Message:
Hello Nobles,
There have been so many events that I have
wanted to share with my fraternal Dad (the person
who appointed me to the Divan) Robert Radar.
A long time friend, he will be missed very
much. Hopefully, he would have been pleased
by the results.
Well, half the year has gone by already. I cannot
believe how fast that happened. We have been
very busy at our Shrine with the top to bottom
cleaning by some of our members. All the carpets
have been shampooed; there was a lot of
mud taken out of them. Next, that same crew
painted the Sphinx Room, walls and trim. Painting went out into
the front hallway and it sure looks good. Next, all the exit light
fixtures have been replaced with the newer LED style. A special
thank you to David, Skip, Ron, Ed, Warren and Russ. It sure is
great when Nobles join in together to get a job done. In addition,
Tony made the Member’s Room rack for our flyers.
Next, the ‘Editorial without words’ will be on our property June
27th. First Lady Dawn is working hard to get it here and setup
for all to enjoy. So much so, she has enlisted me to drive to
Florida and pick up the ‘big guy’ and truck him home. Please
make your calendars for July 25. This is the date the Grand Master
and his Officers will come to our Temple and perform the
Corner Stone Ceremony on the site where the statue will stand.
This is a very interesting program and I hope you can make it.
After the ceremony, we have a 200 pound pig on the barbecue
for all to enjoy along with all the fixin’s. Cost will be $15 per
person. Yes, there will be Chicken for those who do not care for
pork. This is not a formal gathering so wear your cowboy outfits
with hats. Details in this issue of the Booster.
Potentate Dick Cassada
While you are reading this, your elected representatives
will be in San Antonio, TX making
many serious decisions regarding our Hospitals, a
possible change to our ceremonial ritual and
other items to come before the Nobility. We all
promise to vote with your interest in mind and
will use a business mind to make these decisions.
We had a terrific trip to the Boston Hospital for
Burn patients on April 4th. The Easter Candy
Hunt, although a little wet, was a huge success.
Sphinx Shriners was very well represented at all
the Memorial Day parades in May. Thanks to all
the Units and Clubs that participated. The Paper
Crusades are off and running and already, some
very good returns are coming in. The Arabian
Shrine Club has again set the bar high for others to catch. Come
on the rest of the Units and Clubs let’s beat them this year!
Last, at very short notice, David McDonough pulled off a deal
with Coleman Brothers for the Sphinx Shriners to be the sponsor
for the Carnival. It promises to prove a great fundraiser. Good
work David.
As we go to refreshment for July and August, everyone please
take good care and drive safely, if traveling. I look forward to
seeing you at our scheduled parades East Hampton Old Home
Days, NSA, MASA and Maple Sugar Bowl in the coming months.
Update on the "Big Guy…"
Remember – Most Worshipful Grand Master, Arthur Carlstrom
and his Grand Officers will be doing the corner stone ceremony
for the foundation of our Editorial Without Words statue at 3:30
PM on Saturday, July 25th. The Family Barbecue (pig roast, etc.)
will be following the ceremony. Be sure to sign up with your family
and friends.
More still needs to done with landscaping, lighting and other
items so we’re still seeking donations. Your purchase of a paver,
paver and statuette or a contribution in any amount will help us
meet our goal of $20,000. Many thanks to all those who have
already ‘claimed their name’ or have committed their time, services
and product to getting our Big Guy in place at his new home.
PLEASE SEE PAGE 11 for Donation Form
Thanks to all,
UNITS and CLUBS ‐ News
Directors Staff
Directors President Ed Pahl, Director
Paul MacDonald, the Potentate and First
Lady, along with a total of 37 Nobles and
ladies headed North on a charter bus to
Gloucester and Rockport, MA on June
6th, 2009.
For 2 hours, we were fed a delicious
combination of chowder, corn bread,
steamed corn‐on‐the‐cob, lobster, and fresh strawberry
shortcake. Our host, the owner of the Gloucester House,
told stories of the history of Gloucester, and saw to our
ravenous appetites.
Legion of Honor
Things are happening with the Sphinx Legion
of Honor. MWPGM Bill Greene has
stepped up to be the Quartermaster and
has done a terrific job of inventorying our
supplies. He is a wonderful addition to the Officers for 2009.
The Sphinx Legion of Honor marched in the Newington and the
Portland Memorial day parades and presented our Nations Flag
up front. The Temple Guard and the Funsters led the way by
carrying the Sphinx banner.
At the June meeting the Legion of Honor we will be processing
three new applications for membership. We invite all veterans
or active service members to attend our meetings on the Last
Monday of each month in the members room at the Sphinx
Temple. To be part of the Legion of Honor, members must be
honorably discharged veterans or active service members.
To present the colors at the Sphinx Shrine meetings or to carry
our flags in a parade or at Grand Masters day, members must
be in uniform. However, our members who are not in uniform,
can be identified by the green, yellow, and red ribbon around
their neck with the Legion of Honor Medallion.
The Legion of Honor intends to participate in the Installation
Banquet for 2010, hosted by the Sphinx Arabian Shrine Club.
YITF, Russ Linsley
After a trip up the road past
the gorgeous homes along the
coast, our group spent the
rest of the afternoon strolling
among the shops in the
picturesque seaport town of
Rockport.
Arabian Shrine Club
On May 30 th seventeen members of the Arabian Shrine Club donated
their time and effort to collect $1285.00 for the Paper Crusade
at the Wal‐Mart in Wallingford, CT. We were there from
8:00 am until 3:00 pm and it was a rewarding time to hear people
thank us for what we do while they donate money. Arabian will
be doing two more Paper Crusades at Wal‐Mart on July 18 th and
Sept 19 th . If anyone would like to join us on these dates you will
be more than welcomed. We are there from 8:00 am till 3:00 pm.
The eleventh annual Walk for Kids will be held at Platt High
School in Meriden on August 22, 2009. We will be at the track
from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm with plenty of food and drink to refresh
you. For anyone interested in walking, there is a form in this
Booster or at the Sphinx Shrine office. Anyone donating $10.00 or
more will receive tickets for door prizes. A dinner and drawing
will be held at the Meriden Masonic Lodge, 112 E. Main Street,
Meriden, starting at 5:00 pm. Join us for a great time!
All money donated to the Walk for Kids goes to the Shriners
Hospitals for Children.
The second annual Installation Dinner will be held on January 23,
2010 with a snow date on January 24 th . The dinner will be held at
The Sphinx Shrine Temple in Newington. Other than the Divan
installation on January 9 th , this is the only other event in which
the Potentate will be installing unit and club officers. We are having
it in Newington because we feel the Shrine Center should be
used more, and to make it more convenient for more Nobles and
their Ladies to participate and enjoy themselves. We will have
information on the menu and pricing in the next booster. We
hope to see you there.
Director….
Dear Mr. Cunningham,
I am writing to thank you again for your kindness in helping
my son, Ajani.
He is now 20 months old and doing remarkably well for a child
with Type III Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Ajani walks, jumps,
hops, dances and RUNS thanks to your help. I appreciate all
you have done to help Ajani. The Montreal Shriners Hospital
and Shriners like you have made it possible
for Ajani to experience a happier life.
Though he is still much smaller than others
his age and fragile, he is smart, very
happy and does things his own way.
Ajani has a zest for life and smiles in
spite of pain, fractures, fatigue or illness.
I am constantly amazed and inspired by
his spirit.
Thank you again for contributing to
those smiles.
Odds 'n' Ends...
Endowments, Wills, and Gifts
The Shriners Hospitals Donor Relations Program (previously
known as Endowments, Wills & Gifts) was organized in the late
1930`s and has grown progressively stronger since that time.
A gift to Shriner Hospitals for Children makes a positive difference
in the life of a child in need of orthopedic, burn or spinal cord
injury care. In fact, Shriners Hospitals for Children is funded entirely
through the generosity of our donors ‐ past and present. All
care and services are provided without charge to the patient and
family, and no payments are sought or received from any insurance
company or state and federal government agency.
Shriner Hospitals for Children depends upon gifts and bequest
from our donors to continue its mission. Many donors have a
relationship with a particular hospital and choose to support it
exclusively.
Most donors, however, choose to support our hospital program
without restriction. The challenge continues today to win the
support of our fellow Nobles for our great philanthropy.
I welcome the opportunity to discuss the benefits of charitable
giving with prospective donors and explain the many aspects to
our giving programs. For more information please feel free to call
me for any advice or assistance I may be in a position to offer
you.
Dawn Loves a Parade...
Two Temple parades have passed us by and
I’m loving it! You all look GREAT! Remember,
I’m keeping track of those units participating
in them. There still are opportunities
to get your unit in the $100 Million
Dollar Club just by parading in at least four
Temple parades.
Ladies, I am enjoying your company and
cheers! Our next parade will be July 11th in East Hampton. We’ll
be gathering on Summit Street in front of the green. I’ll try to get
a shady spot, so look up the hill from Main Street. The Maple
Sugar Bowl parade will be in Windsor, VT – about 20 minutes
from the Fireside Inn. I won’t have a location until we get there
and check it out. Call me (860‐985‐9418) any time after Thursday,
August 6th. We’ll also be doing the caravan from the Fireside
– same as in previous years – with those who offer to drive.
Mid‐Atlantic Association, Virginia Beach, VA (September 12th)
and Northeast Association, Burlington, VT (September 26th) will
be the others we’ll have to scope out spots for. Keep my number
handy!
Please call me at (860) 666‐0890 with any questions.
Remaining Temple Parade Schedule:
• July 11 East Hampton Old Home Days form up at 9:00 AM at
the High School, Maple St.
• August 1 Hanover form up at 8:00 AM at the Fireside and
then we head down to exit 9, I91, Windsor, for the parade.
• September 12 MASA Virginia Beach
• September 26 NSA Burlington, VT form up at University
Mall on Dorset St, South Burlington, VT at 11 AM.
NOTE: Sphinx drew #2 in the parade order!
New Noble Obligated with a Special Message to Nobility Present...
New Noble, Mike Garcia was obligated on 4/15 with a very special message to the Nobles present. It was a heartfelt speech that he
gave to us all, telling us what the Shrine Hospitals have meant to him personally, and his family. It was a moving moment and one
that brought the room to its feet in appreciation of him sharing this special story.
The following was an email written by Mike's wife Chris:
This week marks the one year anniversary of the fire that severely injured our nephew and greatnephew
‐little Garrett and his Dad Matthew.
They are both doing remarkably well. We consider it a great miracle that they are here with us today. I
think Garrett will be coming back to Boston Shriners in June for more procedures so we hope to see
them then. Matthew is back to work now, which is amazing. Little Garrett continues to have to wear his
clear, plastic face mask 24/7 and his pressure garments, but he is a playful, rambunctious, normal 5 year
old. God, with the help of the Shriners / angels, truly saved his life.
Thank you to all of you have remembered them, and our family, in your prayers. We are truly appreciate
and grateful that God has spared them and we have them with us today! We were beside ourselves
with anxiety this time last year, but today we are happy and grateful.
God Bless, Chris and Mike (and the entire family)
way around the track in her walker & we hope you will support
her!
Why Shriners Hospital? Twice a year we travel with Nicole to
the Shriners Hospital in Springfield, MA where they offer expert
they monitor her growth and development. Nicole receives not
only the best in medical care, but all the adaptive equipment
she needs to be independent! This hospital and the care provided
to our daughter is nothing less than extraordinary!
We'd like to ask all of you to consider making a
donation in support of Nicole & her walk on August
22nd. ALL DONATIONS WILL GO TO THE SHRINERS HOSPITAL
FOR CHILDREN. Checks should be made out to SHRINERS
HOSPITAL and can be mailed to our home at:
Nicole Wheaton
her driver's permit and practices her driving most days in a
sporty, blue Toyota Matrix, equipped with hand‐controls! She
has started her college search and will be applying this Fall.
In late June, Nicole will travel with an organization called Diveheart
on a week long scuba diving trip to Key Largo in the Florida
Keys with her cousin Mallory. In
July she will spend 10‐days at Bentley
College in Waltham, MA to explore the
fields of Law & Trial Advocacy.
We want to thank you all for your continued
love and support as we watch
Nicole grow into a beautiful, young
woman making her way in this world.
Together we can make a difference in
Life is a journey ... NOT a guided tour
CHAPLAIN’S
CORNER
Vernon Cleaves,
Past Potentate
When I was quite young, my father
had one of the first telephones in our
neighborhood. I remember the polished,
old case fastened to the wall.
The shiny receiver hung on the side of
the box. I was too little to reach the
telephone, but used to listen with fascination
when my mother talked to it.
Then I discovered that somewhere
inside the wonderful device lived an
amazing person. Her name was
"Information Please" and there was
nothing she did not know. Information
Please could supply anyone's number
and the correct time.
One day while my mother was visiting a
neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I
whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but
there seemed no point in crying because there was no one
home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my
throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone!
Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to
the landing. Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor
and held it to my ear. "Information, please" I said into the
mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small
clear voice spoke into my ear.
"Information..." "I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone,
the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.
"Isn't your mother home?" came the question.
home but me," I blubbered.
"Nobody's
"Are you bleeding?" the voice asked. "No," I replied. "I hit my
finger with the hammer and it hurts." "Can you open the icebox?"
she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a little bit of ice
and hold it to your finger," said the voice.
After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked
her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia
was. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet
chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before,
would eat fruit and nuts.
Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called,
"Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened,
and then said things grown‐ups say to soothe a child. But I was
not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so
beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap
of feathers on the bottom of a cage?"
never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the
table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of
those childhood conversations never really left me. Often, in
moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene
sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient,
understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a
little boy. A few years later, on my way west to college, my
plane put down in Seattle. I had about a half‐hour or so between
planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my
sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was
doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information
Please." Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so
well. "Information." I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself
saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?" There was a
long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your
finger must have healed by now." I laughed, "So it's really you,"
I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to
me during that time?" I wonder," she said, "if you know how
much your call meant to me. I never had any children and I
used to look forward to your calls."
I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I
Asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister.
"Please do", she said. "Just ask for Sally."
Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered,
"Information." I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?"
she said. "Yes, a very old friend," I answered. "I'm sorry to
have to tell you this," she said. "Sally had been working parttime
the last few years because she was sick. She died five
weeks ago."
Before I could hang up she said, "Wait a minute, did you say
your name was Wayne?" "Yes." I answered.
"Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case
you called. Let me read it to you." The note said, "Tell him there
are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean."
I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.
Never underestimate the impression you may
make on others.
These impressions will lift you on eagle's wings.
Helping you to find the joy and peace you long for.
Life is a journey ... NOT a guided tour.
She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly,
"Wayne always remember that there are other worlds to sing
in." Somehow I felt better.
All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest.
When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to
Boston. I missed my friend very much. "Information Please"
belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow
SPHINX SHRINERS MOTOR PATROL
Captain Nickolos Daniolos, along with Lt. Bob Burns and
Lt. Charley Weiss, have successfully led the Motor Patrol
through the first eight parades of the year. with at least
15 to 18 showing up for each parade. The only problem
we had was at the Middlebury Memorial Day Parade on
Sunday. We arrived in Middlebury at about 4:00 pm, and
were followed by a bad thunder storm which arrived at
about 4:45 pm. Needless to say, the parade was canceled.
The Little Cars have been running especially well this year under
the watchful eye of Bob Burns along with his faithful crew of Hank
Wellin, Jack Markowski, Dave Fraser, Jack Sterry and all of the
others who worked hard during the winter months to get them all
in shape for the 2009 parade season. Thanks also to Bart Blonstein
and Weston Bedore for refurbishing the lighting systems on
all of the little cars.
The Tuesday night practices are being run by Past Captain Bill
Logvin. These practices are very necessary to insure that the
maneuvers that we perform look especially good in
our parades. These practices have not been as well
attended as they should be, consequently our performance
in some parades has been under par. All
members should plan to attend these practices so
that we can look as professional as possible.
The Motor Patrol held a Tag Sale on the 26th of April.
This Tag Sale was masterminded by Past Captain and
Present Lieutenant Bob Burns. In all the Sale was a
great success, and plans are underway to have another Sale in the
Fall. President Weston Bedore is also planning to have a car wash
later this Spring.
On a sadder note, on May 5th 2009 the Black Camel took our long
time member, Past Captain, and Past Treasurer of the Motor Patrol
Harold Geer. Harold was an active and very dedicated member
of the Motor Patrol for 48 years and he will be greatly missed
by all.
Consolation
Earth hath no sorrows that heaven can not heal,
As I softly repeat it, great comfort I feel.
And I long to reach out to those in the storm,
Of sorrows dark night and point to the morn.
When joy will abound up there in the skies,
As God gently wipes the tears from our eyes!
Oh then we will see clearly the face we adore,
And greet our dear loved one who has gone before.
Gone every heartache that here we may feel,
For earth hath no sorrows that heaven can not hear.
Farewell, Illustrious Sir
