2007 Potentate's Message...
To All Sphinx Nobles
It is with much pride and
humility, that I accept the
position of Potentate for the
year 2007. Success in this
coming year can only happen
with the entire Divan and
Nobility working together. I can
assure you that the Divan will
be working closely with all
their units and clubs to do
everything possible to assure
that we have a great 2007.
As Shriners, we know that we
have only two reasons to
come together, to have fun and to help our Kids. Thus,
our slogan for the year 2007... “Fun 4 the KIDS!"
You will see that we will try some different things in order
to accomplish this. At the Installation, alone, we raised
$200.00 just having fun!
The Divan Ladies also have a Fundraiser for our new
building. They are selling brick pavers, with your names
and remembrances engraved on them. The goal of this is
to purchase a 9 foot statue of our beloved “Editorial
Without Words.” It will be placed in front of our building to
tell the world about us. We will need appropriately
$20,000 to make this happen, so please get your order in
now!
We will have three other major focus points this year:
Public Relations, Membership and Communication.
As I hope you are well aware, our Public Relations
Chairman Scott Bates and his crew have been hard at
work getting the word out. We went to a ribbon cutting
Ceremony for the new remodeled McDonald’s on the
Berlin Turnpike on January 12th. His crew put together
an E.A. Degree Team and did the degree in Watertown on
January 18.
We also have a big PR Day at the Rock Cats baseball
game on July 21, 2007, when the Chanters will sing our
National Anthem, while the Legion of Honor will present
the colors. The Rock Cats are also giving us a table at the
front gate to provide literature regarding our "Masonic
Family." The Daughters of the Nile will also be assisting
us with this effort.
1533 members, the year 2007 can be a year that we can
start to turn the trend around. I have asked our Past
Potentates to help us with retention, as well as asking all
the units and clubs to do the same. We also need to
remember as we bring new Nobles in that they join for a
reason. We must make sure we welcome them and fulfill
their expectations.
We will be trying a new idea at Sphinx this year. It has
worked well in other Shrine Centers and that is using a
regular E-Mail communication to increase awareness of
Shrine activities. We are in the process of setting up a
system so we can get information to all the Nobility that
have an E-Mail addresses listed with the recorder. We
hope to have this up and running very soon.
I can go on and on about the direction in which we are
trying to head. The bottom line is that I can make plans,
the Divan can make plans and anybody can make plans
to try and accomplish great things. However, unless we all
do it together the goals become very difficult to reach. So,
come on out to see what is going on and, in 2007, have
“Fun 4 the KIDS!”

Divan in 2002, we had 1989 members, today as I take the
office of Potentate our membership is 1533, however I am
very optimistic that we are ready to change this trend. PR

Chaplain’s Corner:
The Lesson of Two Spoons
A holy man was having a
conversation with the Lord one day
and said, "Lord, I would like to
know what Heaven and Hell are
like.
"The Lord led the holy man to two
doors. He opened one of the doors
and the holy man looked in.
In the middle of the room was a
large round table. In the middle of the table was a large
pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy
man's mouth water.
The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly.
They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons
with very long handles that were strapped to their arms
and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew
and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer
than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into
their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their
misery and suffering.
The Lord said, "You have seen Hell."
They went to the next room and opened the door. It was
exactly the same as the first one. There was the large
round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy
man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the
same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well
nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man
said, "I don't understand.”
“It is simple” said the Lord, “it requires but one skill. You
see, they have learned to feed each other. While the
greedy think only of themselves.
I wonder???
SPHINX CARAVAN SHRINE CLUB
At the January 10th meeting of the Sphinx Caravan Shrine Club,
2007 Potentate Elect Edward J. Pahl, accompanied by CR
Samuel A. Frink, AR Richard A. Cassada, HP&P David W.
McDonough, and 2nd CM Howard Pinkham, installed the 2007
Caravan Officers:

• Absent was 1st VP Jack Kuzmak.
The Caravan Shrine Club was the first Unit, or Club to vote in
favor of the Potentate’s Lady/Divan Ladies project for our new
shrine building – that of purchasing a brick for the walkway
leading to the “Editorial without Words” Shrine statue that will be
placed in front of the building. Their hope is to raise $20,000 in
order to purchase this 9 foot statue by selling bricks for the
walkway.
On a lighter note, HP&P David McDonough was greeted, as our
new club representative, in true Caravan fashion. Since Dave
has been asked to stand, even though he already was, at
Sphinx Shrine monthly meetings, Club President William Voigt
presented him with a foot stool so everyone can see him when
he talks. Dave took full advantage of the boost in height as he
stood behind 2nd CM Howard Pinkham prompting him on what
he should be saying as he addressed the club members, and
their ladies, that were present

member of the Caravan Shrine Club, or would like to check our
club out, or perhaps you and your lady would like meet with
fellow Nobles and their ladies over dinner. Feel free to join us

We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at various

One year ago I was taking the
Oath of Potentate for Sphinx
Shrine and now I am writing my
final message as the 2006
Potentate.
I want to thank everyone for all
their support for 2006. Although it
was a very busy year, with the
Northeast Convention, Pending
Sale of the Shrine Center, and the normal day-to-day
running of the Shrine Center, I believe it was a
productive one.
Liz and I have both enjoyed being the Potentate and
First Lady of Sphinx. We have enjoyed the many friends
we have made at Sphinx and in the Northeast. Although
we are looking forward to a little rest and relaxation, the
memories will be with us forever.
We would both like to wish 2007 Potentate and First
Lady, Ed and Linda Pahl, continued success and it
would be our wish that all Nobles and Ladies of Sphinx
would continue to support the both of them, and the work
of your entire Divan so that Sphinx will continue for many
years to come.
Once again, on behalf of Liz and myself, thank you for
“Adding Fun to the Mix in 2006”. May you all have a

Brother, Noble and Jester
Gerald Rudolph Ford, 1913-2006
The 38th President of the United States, 1974 - 1977
Born 1913, called home by the Grand Architect December 2006.
His first services to Freemasonry came many years before the his actual
Masonic history.
Gerald Ford was selected for the Eastern Team on the Shriners’ East West
Crippled Children game at San Francisco. This was on January 1,1935. He was
a member of the University of Michigan's undefeated national championship
football teams and in 1934, played in the Shriners’ East-West Crippled Children's
benefit classic in San Francisco.
Brother Ford was Initiated on September 30, 1949, Malta Lodge No. 465, Grand
Rapids, Michigan, along with his half-brothers Thomas Gardner Ford (1918-
1995), Richard Addison Ford (1924-) and James Francis Ford (1927- ).
The Fellowcraft and Master Mason Degrees were conferred by Columbia Lodge No. 3, Washington, D.C., on April 20 and
May 18, 1951, as a courtesy to Malta Lodge.
Brother Ford's father, Gerald R. Sr., a 33rd degree Mason presented the lambskin apron.
He received the Scottish Rite degrees in the Valley of Grand Rapids in 1957 and created a Sovereign Grand Inspector
General Honorary 33rd degrees at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, on September 26, 1962, for which he served as
Exemplar (Representative) for his Class., Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, in 1962. This is the highest honor that can come
to an honorary member of the Northern Supreme Council of the A.A.S.R.
Brother and President Ford was unanimously elected an Active Member of the International Supreme Council, Order of
DeMolay and its Honorary Grand Master, at its Annual Session held at Orlando, Florida, April 6-9, 1975. Brother Ford held
this post until January 1977, at which time he became a Past Honorary Grand Master, receiving his Collar and Jewel on
October 24, 1978 in Topeka, Kansas, from the Hon. Thomas C. Raum, Jr., Grand Master, Order of DeMolay as well as
being an Honorary Member, DeMolay Legion of Honor.
Noble Ford joined Saladin Shrine Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. in 1959. Jester Ford became a member of Court No. 11,
Royal Order of Jesters.
