The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) launches the
"16 days of Activism" campaign with messages on thousands
of wooden stars to strengthen the rights of women and to
stop gender based violence.

When the 2012/13 editorial team met to
decide the topic of this year’s issue, the
ideas flowed freely – climate change, refugees,
children, civil-military relationships,
international humanitarian law and
corruption were discussed. Finally, a
questionnaire was sent to all the NOHAs
asking them what they found most interesting.
Gender received the majority of
votes. We were very happy to receive a
diversity of articles that reflect part of
the complexity of the concept of gender.
In this issue, you can read about the violations
of Roma women’s rights in Europe,
sexual violence against men, the
special needs of girl soldiers, and about
the role played by women in building
peace in the DRC. You will also find a
feedback on the participation of the Bochum
students in the Humanitarian Congress
in Berlin, as well as an article on
contemporary forms of slavery. A few
suggestions of interesting comics and
documentaries are also included for you
to enjoy in your free time.
