Council
national this year, with 10 members from British Columbia,
Ontario and Nova Scotia. Since they came together in fall
2009, the group has been actively spreading the word
about Roots & Shoots in their own communities, mentoring
groups and taking part in a wide range of events across
the country. Most recently, a delegation from Roots &
Shoots attended the Convention on Biological Diversity
Conference of the Parties (COP10) in Nagoya, Japan,
where they presented to world leaders on the importance
of biodiversity, and helped to draft a Youth Convention.
“Working with members of the Roots
& Shoots global community has been
a beautiful adventure – it has been the
most rewarding experience I could ever
ask for. I have dedicated my hard work
and enthusiasm to the program and, in
turn, I have been given many amazing
opportunities that have allowed me to
make a positive difference both locally
and globally.”
In December 2009 Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots
received a grant from Indian and Northern Affairs
Canada to introduce the program to First Nations,
Inuit and Métis youth across the country.
Since then, we have been making visits to
communities across the country, assessing their
needs and priorities, and supporting groups
of young people as they identify issues to get
working on. The response has been enthusiastic,
and several youth-led projects are underway --
ranging from a recycling initiative to community
gardens and fundraising for protection of local
eagle populations.
