message from the founder Dear Friends of JGI, Half a century has passed since I first set foot at Gombe in Tanzania on July 14, 1960 to begin studying the behaviour of chimpanzees, our closest relatives. So much has happened since then. These days I am more likely to be found on an airplane, meeting with corporate leaders or speaking to large crowds of people than to be connecting directly with chimpanzees. Yet the work I am doing now is critically important to the protection of these extraordinary creatures, not just at Gombe, but throughout their range in Africa. And these efforts are bearing fruit. Our efforts to protect the landscape around Gombe and other key areas of chimpanzee habitat in Africa are gathering strength. Communities have become our partners in conservation. Trees are springing up on the deserted slopes, and through our Roots & Shoots programs, children are learning about the chimpanzees and their environment, and the need to protect them. With support from people across the globe, among them many Canadians, we are showing the world that it is possible to protect habitat and wild species, and improve people’s lives at the same time. I get back to Gombe twice a year now, though these visits are short. Yet, I can climb up to the peak from where I first observed the chimpanzees at a distance, and recapture the wonder of the early days, renewing my energy, and absorbing the peace of the forest to sustain me for the tough months on the road. And although, along with many of the people I have treasured in my life, my old chimp friends have all passed away, their children and grandchildren are still roaming the forests. The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is leading the way in mobilizing the support of Canadians and their government behind our conservation efforts. Thank you so much for your support to the work they are doing in Africa and here in Canada. As we move forward from this extraordinary anniversary I am amazed and humbled by the past and the present, and very hopeful about what the future holds. I know that with the support of people like you we will succeed in working together to make this world a better place for all.
