towel
• bottled water for you to drink
Here is a photo of my collection of mosquito larvae,
freshwater and fairy shrimp.
Some things to consider when looking for a suitable
pond to collect live food:
• should be small, shallow and sheltered by
trees
• water should be slow moving
• bottom should be covered with leaves
• if you can see fish and/or frogs in the water,
then they have probably already eaten
the live foods
• avoid storm management ponds, they
routinely get flushed out when it rains
• earlier in April, you can also find glass
worms
Make sure that when you feed your fish at home,
give only a few larvae at a time, to make sure that
they all get eaten. You do not want to have any
of these larvae become flying insects in your
home.
Items to bring:
• rubber boots – or waders if you have
them
• assorted nets, some fine, some course
• one long handled net to move leaves and
other debris on the bottom of the pond
• a pail with a lid to accumulate the collection
• a hat and sunglasses so you can see into
the water
• spare socks and shoes (just in case) and a
