Challenges • Around 30% of GRG left their jobs to care for their grandchildren. • GRG tend to: • Feel guilty & ashamed because their child may be incarcerated. • Fell guilty & ashamed because their child may be addicted to drug or alcohol. • Quit their jobs or cut back on work hours. • Make other financial sacrifices to support their grandchildren.
Challenges Accessing Services • GRG have lower incomes, thereby increasing their risk of little to no health care access, • Unstable family environments, and • Poorer diets (Marx & Solomon, 2000). • Chronic disabilities are found more often in Black & Hispanic grandparents than White grandparents (Bachman & Chase-Lansdale, 2005).
