Kana used <strong>of</strong>ten. Mila knew it was just the woman’s attempt to make sure she was well<br />

fed.<br />

“You’re sure your husb<strong>and</strong> won’t mind that I’m stealing his second serving?”<br />

Mila teased.<br />

Kana chuckled. “Don’t you worry about Don, he had three helpings tonight.<br />

Besides, you’re leaving tomorrow afternoon so this will be the last time you eat my<br />

glorious cooking.”<br />

Mila smiled at Kana’s reply <strong>and</strong> stood up. They left the ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>and</strong> went down three<br />

floors <strong>and</strong> stopped at the first floor where Mila’s living area was. She placed her h<strong>and</strong> on<br />

a small metal plate secured to the wall. A moment later it reacted to her magical<br />

signature, sending a small current though the wall, across the ceiling, <strong>and</strong> to a small glass<br />

blown globe that hung in the middle. In the blink <strong>of</strong> an eye, the room was cast in a dull<br />

yellow light.<br />

At the center <strong>of</strong> the room were a small round table <strong>and</strong> two chairs. Mila sat down<br />

as Kana busied herself with dishing out the warm soup <strong>and</strong> bread. Besides the furniture,<br />

the room contained only boxes stacked side by side <strong>and</strong> on top <strong>of</strong> one another. There<br />

were only two other rooms that belonged to Mila, <strong>and</strong> they were just as bare. All <strong>of</strong> her<br />

possessions had been packed away, ready to be carried <strong>of</strong>f with her when she left the next<br />

day. Mila felt a lump in her stomach as she picked up the spoon <strong>and</strong> began to eat. I’ll be<br />

back here soon. I won’t miss this place because the village work will keep me so busy that<br />

I probably won’t even have time to think.<br />
