A PASSION FOR RIDING
Back in 1974 when I started Specialized, I made a conscious
decision to focus on high-end bicycle components and
equipment. I had ridden through Europe and was impressed
with the passion people there had for high-tech bikes and
equipment. I knew there was a demand for these kinds of
products in the States, but supplies were scarce. Following
my passion for cycling, I sold just about everything I
owned—including my VW bus—to gather the capital to
start this company.
I settled on the name Specialized simply because that was
how all of us riders referred to high-end components at the
time. I had no idea we would come to have such an impact
on the growth and accessibility of cycling, but I am pleased
that we’ve been able to make all types of riding more fun
for more people. Our founding principle—to focus on the
rider’s need for functional, technically advanced products
that provide a true performance benefit—is even more valid
today than it was back when we started. It’s what makes
us Specialized, and when we successfully deliver on that
principle, we make every rider’s time on a bike better.
It was our desire to improve everyone’s time on a bike that
drove us to develop our own line of suspension components
including our E150 fork, the lightest and stiffest fork of its
kind, and AFR (Active Functional Response) Shocks, which
feature a host of innovations, including our Spike Valve and
Brain Fade technologies. Suspension is one of the most
complicated parts of a bike, and by integrating the design
of our time-tested FSR suspension and bicycle chassis with
forks and shocks, we’re able to control every element of the
ride of our bikes.
The new Roubaix SL is also the result of our drive to improve
the people’s riding experiences. It’s the lightest endurance
road bike out there and, because it boasts greater vertical
compliance than letting 30psi out of your tire, provides the
smoothest ride around.
Although we’ve been in business for over three decades,
we still have an amazing passion for riding and for creating
innovative bicycles and equipment. Thanks to passionate
cyclists who believe in Specialized and the gear that we
make, it feels like we’re just warming up.
