When creating the SL2, we couldn’t afford tomake a chassis that was simply light. To meet the demandsof fast finishing riders like Tom Boonen, who at 6’4” androughly 180 pounds is one of the most imposing andpowerful riders in the world, we were forced to create achassis that is as stiff as it is vertically compliant and as lightas it is great handling. With the SL2 we’ve succeeded. Whenwe asked him if he was happy with his new bike he said,"Yeah, yeah, so now we have to win.”We made our first carbon bike in 1988 and, in the twodecades since, we've learned a lot about blendingultra-strong fibers and resin for the best combination ofstiffness and resiliency, strength and durability. Control ofthe design, material selection and fabrication method usedin the creation of our new FACT IS (Integrated Structure)chassis allows us to shape and massage every squaremillimeter of the SL2 for maximum performance. Every tubechanges diameter and shape multiple times to trim preciousgrams while boosting vertical compliance, lateral andtorsional stiffness to ensure razor-sharp handlingand wicked acceleration.New for 2008, our FACT IS manufacturing processintegrates several different manufacturing methods includingboth our AZ1 sequential curing and monocoque fabricationmethods to achieve new levels of performance. “By testingand re-testing in our advanced lab, considering feedbackfrom the world's best riders and continually refining thecarbon manufacturing processes that we were already usingwith good results, we've created a new level of performancethat is unmatched by anything that either us or ourcompetitors have developed,” says Specialized Director ofEngineering, Mark Schroeder. “FACT IS has allowed us tosave nearly 100 grams over last year's Tarmac frame whiledramatically boosting efficiency and compliance.”VERTICAL FRAME COMPLIANCE COMPARISON18.016.014.015.314.713.96(lbf/inch)((inch/lbf)E+4)(lbf/inch)12.010.08.080.06.070.04.060.080.050.040.070.0S-Works Roubaix60.030.050.040.078.8Tarmac SL2, S-Works30.078.875.5Tarmac SL2, S-Worksrks75.573.111.2Tarmac SL, S-WorksLook 585Cervelo R3Scott Addict71.3Trek Madone 5.2, 2008Tarmac SL, S-WorksCannondale System63ict73.171.3TORSIONAL 10.1 FRAME STIFFNESS COMPARISON9.49.08.78.466.760.9Cervelo Soloist SLC-SL660.9Cervelo Soloist SLC-SL66.7rksTORSIONAL FRAME STIFFNESS COMPARISONCannondale SynapseSL60.960.958.6Scott AddictGiant Advanced TCRse58.658.5S-Works RoubaixRCervelo R358.552.2Trek Madone 5.2, 2008aixTime VXRS Ulteam51.48.1Cannondale SynapseOrbea Orca08rca47.17.5BMC Pro Machine SLC01Look 58544.5Time VXRS Ulteam8542.96.9Cannondale System6* See notes on testing on page 7852.251.447.144.5BMC Pro Machine SLC01am42.9017

The result is a fork that's incrediblystiff and precise 80.0handling, but still plenty light. To ensure maximum strength and impact resistance we'vedesigned the SL2's 60.0 fork with a number of unique features.(lbf/inch)70.0First, we inset the bottom bearing of the headset 12mm50.0into the headtube. That puts the bearing directly in-linewith the downtube, 40.0 giving the frame and fork maximumimpact resistance. For even more impact resistance, we30.078.8employ a patented method for “laying–up” the carbonfibers in the transition between the fork crown and 1.5-inchsteerer tube. FACT CRANK & BOTTOM BRACKET1800Unmatched Stiffness; Unparalleled Shifting Efficiency1600Redesigned to help fast finishers find the finish line first, the new-for-2008 version of 1400 the S-Works FACT carboncrank is even stiffer (it was already the stiffest on the1200market) and better shifting than the original version. We've(lbf/inch/Kg)2000improved its stiffness by giving 1000 the crankarm a moreefficient 'D' shape, upgrading the coupling system that links800the two arms together and enhancing the design of the spider. We've improved shifting 600 performance by refining toothprofiles, reengineering the spider and adding a400proprietary 3-19 Ni Boron plating to the chainrings.200CRANK SYSTEM WEIGHTED STIFFNESS COMPARISONSpecialized S-Works, 1793Further boosting the SL2's performance out on the road0and in our lab is the bike's fully integrated bottom Cranks Tested bracket.
