A Greek Myth
Alexander and his Vorpal Sword
Many thousands of years ago, there was a beautiful
beach on the island of Crete. The beach had lush
palm trees swaying to and fro in the warm, gentle
breeze. Pebble paths ran up and down the beach,
always finding somewhere to go. Boats bobbed up
and down on the calm, deep blue sea. Bible black
caves loomed over the beach, watching it like a hawk.
The hot summer sun blazed down onto the beach, like
a fireball. However, it wasn’t always like that….
One day a menacing storm struck the beach! It
splintered the ominous sky like a charging bull.
Unfortunately, the deafening noise awoke the great
beast! After that, the beach needed a hero. Alexander
volunteered to be their hero. He was a strong and
young man, but calm and gentle. His shield shone
like the sun and his golden sword gleamed.
Alexander also needed a friend to keep him company.
Then, in a split second, a young lady called
Dimitra Giakalis shot up her hand. She was born in
Mykonos, lived there until she was fourteen, then
moved to Crete. She was a very beautiful lady, with
eyes of vivid turquoise and long brown hair the colour
of a conker.
Alexander immediately announced her to the
stand. He asked her if she really wanted to risk her
life on the adventure. Dimitra replied “yes it’ll be
fun!” Moments later, the king summoned both of
them to the castle. His nerves sent a tingle down his
spine, as they entered the castle. The king sent them
their instructions, and seconds later, they set of on
their life taking adventures.
It had gobbled up the innocent teachers, and has
devoured the children and parents. It had looked like
it had been dragged through a hedge backwards. Its
hair was a tangle of snakes, hissing and squirming.
Its bulging yellow eyes stared at people in deadly
thought. It had paws as bumpy as a twig, and its
claws were as sharp as knives.
Alexander and Dimitra had to travel on foot over
the white golden sand on the beach. Its cave stood
over the beach in the rocks of the cliff, so they
clambered onto the rocks to climb up. Seconds later,
they were up, and Alexander and Dimitra were
cautiously standing on the front ledge entrance.
Nervously, Alexander edged inside the cave and
tiptoed towards the monster. Fear seized his heart like
a grabbing hand. Twigs and pieces of dried up flesh
crumbled and cracked beneath his feet. Out of
nowhere, a shadow scurried around him, then he
looked at the beast, what was that monster? Where
did it come from? As he trod over towards it, the
beasts legs unwound like a charmed snake, and
turned around, its back facing him. Then it pulled its
head back and let out a loud shrill, its yellow
bulging eyes snapped open but then one closed so he
could trick Alexander. Meanwhile, Alexander tiptoed
over to it. Before you could say Jack Frost, the
creature pounced and attacked. Alexander’s heart
missed a beat.
Its murderous eyes scanned Alexander. What
did it want of him? Gurgling sounds escaped its
throat in deadly thought. The odour of rotten flesh
lingered around the cave, sending a tingle down
Alexander’s spine. Then as quick as a flash, it
whacked Alexander around the head. Alexander
staggered onto the cold, hard floor, with blood
erupting from his forehead. Out of nowhere, Dimitra
appeared with a gleaming white sword. “Catch” she
slid it across the floor to Alexander. Exhaustedly,
Alexander leaped to his feet and charged at the
creature, the fight had begun! Fear striked him like a
Year 6 receiving his SATS results. With his vorpal
sword raised high in the air, sun light bounced off it
into the creatures eyes, blinding it. In a split second,
he galloped over and aimed and its arm, missed.
“You can do it!”
Dimitra called from behind him. The thing plunged its
whole body onto Alexander. Alexander was sure he
was dead, but then he saw the end of his sword
straight through the creatures chest. Had he killed it?
No! It let out an almighty roar of pain and pulled
out the sword. Back on there feet they began to fight.
Once again, Alexander aimed his sword at its arm and
succeeded. Yes! He had stabbed its weak spot!
Alexander enjoyed watching it vaporise to dust.
After that, Dimitra came and gave Alexander
an almighty hug. “You’ve saved the beach! Thank you,
Oh Thank You!” seconds later, they found a horse
hooked upto a cart and rode it home. The town cheered
in disbelief. He and Dimitra were relived to be home
after there treacherous journey back. The King rushed
up and shook Alexanders hand “You’ve saved the
town!” he shrieked in delight. A feast was put on for
them which please them both. After the feast, the King
told them to come up to the royal stand. “To repay
you for saving this town, both of you will be crowned
King and Queen!” The crowd roared. That night the
town was alive and awake with excitement. Peace was
restored, that was, until many years later…
