OUR SCHOOL
We are fortunate in our facilities, having twelve classrooms, two halls an ICT suite, a
library and community rooms with crèche facilities available. Outside we have three
playgrounds and extensive playing fields.
The school is maintained by Derby City Council and is a co-educational day school. The
planned admission level for our school is 45 pupils. All children who live in the
catchment area are entitled to a place in the school. Those children living outside this
area may also be considered for admission if they have brothers or sisters in the school
or live very close. Children are admitted to our nursery when they are 3 years old.
At the end of their primary education at Beaufort, the children transfer to a range of
secondary schools across the city and also in Derbyshire. We have established links
with six feeder secondary schools.
Our School is a Full Service Extended School and aims to provide a range of services
and activities, often beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of our pupils, their
families and the wider community.
We have OFSTED registered childcare provision available before school, after school
and during the school holidays (except Christmas). We are open from 7.50a.m. to
6.00p.m. during term time and 9.00a.m. to 6.00p.m. in the holidays. Parents can also buy
in extra sessions for nursery age children in our Early Years Unit.
Job Centre Plus visit our school regularly to support parents with claiming tax credits
and finding out about local training/work opportunities. School newsletters are
distributed regularly which provide details of all our other services, including Parent
and Toddler Group, Toy Library, Stay and Play sessions and Baby Massage.
We are also a partner in Derwent Children’s Centre along with Derwent Stepping
Stones and Revive Healthy Living Centre. This enables us to provide additional services
for our families.
PARENTS AND CARERS
We regard parents/carers as partners and firmly believe that children learn most
effectively when parents and school work together to further each child’s education.
Teaching Staff are normally available at the end of the school day. If you wish to see
your child’s teacher, please contact the school office so this can be arranged.
The Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher is available at the beginning and end of the
day. The office staff will be happy to arrange a time for you to meet with them.
We celebrate each child’s achievements and parents/carers are invited into school for
“good work” assemblies, performances, workshops and other activities. Times are set
aside each term to meet your child’s class teacher at parent interviews.
An increasing number of parents/carers offer to help in school or on visits. All helpers
in school are required to undertake safeguarding checks. We welcome the support
offered, so if you are able to help in school, please talk to the Headteacher.
BEAUFORT PARENT GROUP
We have a group of parents and governors who regularly organise events to raise
money for the school. If you are interested in working with this group, please have a
chat to our Extended School Co-ordinator.
THE CURRICULUM
All Staff work closely together to ensure each child is engaged in a broad and balanced
curriculum.
EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
Children in the Foundation Stage One (Nursery) and Foundation Stage Two (Reception)
follow the Statutory Foundation Stage Curriculum. The children are assessed mainly
through teacher observation and this informs their Early Years Profile.
KEY STAGE 1 & KEY STAGE 2
All pupils follow the National Curriculum Core and Foundation Subjects. The Core
Subjects include Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Information and Communication
Technology. The Foundation Subjects are History, Geography, Design and Technology,
Music, Art, Physical Education, Personal, Social and Health Education, Religious
Education and a Modern Foreign Language (Key Stage 2).
Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning in school. At the end of each
Key Stage, children take Statutory Assessments (SATs).
HOMEWORK
We operate a home school reading scheme
which needs your enthusiasm and a small but
regular amount of your time, to consolidate
your child’s reading ability. Your child will be
given tables and spellings to learn and it will
be helpful if you can check that he/she is
doing this. In addition Key Stage 1 children are
given an activity each week.
Key Stage 2 children are given a weekly homework task and parents are asked to
complete a homework diary with relevant comments about the work.
ACTIVITIES AND VISITS
We arrange a range of activities and visits to enhance the children’s learning. Costs are
always kept to a minimum and we ask for a voluntary contribution to cover the costs.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Beaufort Primary is non-denominational. R.E. and school assemblies are taught in
accordance with Derby City ‘Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education’. Parents who
wish their child to withdraw from assemblies and/or R.E. lessons are asked to contact
the Headteacher.
HEALTH AND DRUGS EDUCATION
An age appropriate Health and Drugs Education programme is taught throughout the
school as part of the PSHE and Science Curriculum. In the final years of school part of
this programme introduces the children to sex education. Parents/Carers may request
to view the materials that are used and have the right to withdraw their children from
these lessons.
SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS
We are an inclusive School and children with special needs are mainly taught in the
classroom alongside their peers. The School follows the Derby City Policy for
identifying and monitoring special needs. Parents/Carers are encouraged to discuss
their child’s Individual Education Plan with staff in School.
For some children specialist teaching will be required to meet their individual needs.
Where specialist programmes are required staff will consult outside agencies. As with
all matters regarding your child if you feel your child has special needs please discuss
this with their class teacher. This will then be referred to our Special Needs Coordinators
in School.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
All children are expected to take part in P.E. and
participate in 2 hours P.E. each week in KS1 and KS2.
A note from parents is necessary if they wish children
to be excused P.E. games or swimming for any
medical reason. Children will only be excused on a
long term basis on receipt of a doctors note.
CLOTHING FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Children must change out of their everyday clothes
into appropriate clothing for reasons of safety and
hygiene.
Indoor Lessons – Shorts and T-shirt or a leotard.
Pumps may be worn though bare feet are best.
Trainers are entirely unsuitable and are not allowed
for indoor P.E.
Outdoor Lessons – A long sleeved sweatshirt or
tracksuit. Trainers may be worn. For health and safety
reasons football boots and shin pads must be worn for
football club and football training.
Swimming – All Year 5 pupils have a weekly lesson. Boys require swimming trunks and a towel
(shorts with long legs are not allowed). Girls require a one piece swimming costume, towel and
hat. Children are not allowed into the pool if they are wearing earrings of any kind. Please ensure
that these can be removed. Children should not miss swimming lessons simply because they
have recently had their ears pierced.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
A number of activities may be offered to children either
at lunchtime or after school. These include football,
multi sports, athletics, art and choir. Some children are
able to attend dancing clubs after school. The range of
activities is regularly changed and a programme of
activities is sent home each term.
COMPLAINTS PROCEDURES
If you have any questions, concerns or complaints about the school curriculum or any
other matters, please refer them initially to the Headteacher. It is expected that most
concerns and questions can be dealt with in this way. If complaints cannot be resolved
then a formal procedure can be invoked. Copies of all school policies and procedures
may be viewed by appointment with the Headteacher.
JEWELLERY AND VALUABLES
Please do not allow your child to bring valuable watches or items of jewellery to school.
They are much better left at home. Children are not allowed to bring toys or games to
school. In particular electronic games and mobile phones should be left at home. We
cannot accept responsibility if such items are lost, damaged or stolen.
For safety reasons children who have pierced ears may only wear one small pair of
studs to school. These must be removed for P.E. If a child has recently had their ears
pierced they will be provided with tape to cover the studs. Any children wearing
earrings do so at their own risk and an exemption form must be signed. Jewellery must
not be worn in school.
DISCIPLINE
We try to establish a good working atmosphere at Beaufort Primary. Children will not
learn effectively if they are misbehaving and they may affect the learning of others in
their class. We have school rules which are easily understood by all pupils. Many of
these rules are concerned with children’s safety. If your child breaks these rules he/she
will be expected to make amends in an appropriate manner. If there is a cause for
concern about a child’s behaviour, this will first be dealt with by staff in school. If there
are persistent difficulties, parents will be contacted so that we can try and reach a joint
approach to the problem. Persistent aggressive, disruptive or disobedient behaviour
may result in exclusion from school. We cannot guarantee the safety of pupils who
refuse to obey instructions from the adults who have responsibility for them.
Quite simply we expect your child to behave with courtesy and respect for other people
at all times. We try to encourage them to be polite to all adults and children in the
school, to be honest, truthful and hard working and to take care of our school building
and equipment.
The great majority of our pupils are extremely well behaved and a credit to their
families. They are able to earn stickers and certificates as a reward for good behaviour.
A copy of the school policy to encourage good behaviour is given to all families with
children in our school.
CHILD PROTECTION
Parents should be aware that the school will take any reasonable action to ensure the
safety of its pupils. In cases where the school has reason to be concerned that a child
may be subject to ill-treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, staff have no alternative
but to follow City Council Child Protection Procedures and inform social services of
their concern.
SECURITY
In the interests of safety both of pupils and staff, the school doors will be kept locked.
Visitors may gain access by contacting staff at the main entrance. Children are not
allowed to open the doors without permission from a member of staff. Please do not ask
them to do so if you are waiting at the door. ANY visitor to the school must report to
the school office and sign in and out, whatever the reason for their visit. Please do not
go directly to your child’s corridor or classroom without first reporting in. Anyone who
has not reported to the office will be challenged and may be asked to leave. Please do
not take offence at this. The safety of our pupils is our main concern.
ROAD SAFETY
Road Safety is taught through a variety of topics and in Health Education. The Road
Safety Officer is involved in working with pupils at regular intervals. Parents and
carers are not allowed to bring cars down the school drive. Children should enter
school via the tunnel under Hampshire Road or should be escorted on foot down the
drive by an adult. This is necessary for the safety of all our children but particularly the
younger children.
We do have a cycle shelter for the storage of bicycles. Children are not allowed to cycle
to school without an adult accompanying them. If cycles are left in the storage area they
must be secured with a lock from home. Cycling Clubs are run regularly for the older
children in school. The programme followed is to encourage safer cycling.
PLAYTIME SNACKS AND DRINKS
We have been awarded the Health Schools Award and participation in the Free Fruit
for Schools Scheme. Children in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are encouraged
to have a piece of fruit each day. Other children may purchase a healthy snack at
playtime or bring a piece of fruit or cereal bar to eat during playtime.
All children have access to drinking water each day. Cold water dispensers are
provided in school and bottles may be purchased from the office or brought in from
home.
SCHOOL DINNERS
Our school meals are cooked in our school kitchens. The dinners offer a nutritionally
balanced menu and include a salad bar. Dinner money needs to be brought into school
at the beginning of the week and dinners must be paid for in advance. Some families
may be eligible for free school meals please contact the school office. Children may
bring in a packed lunch. This must not include a hot drink or hot soup. Glass bottles,
cans or fizzy drinks must not be brought into school.
CHARGING
Voluntary contributions will be requested in order to pay for organised activities and
educational visits. Sufficient contributions will have to be made in order for a visit to go
ahead. Parents/Carers experiencing financial difficulty will need to discuss this with
the Headteacher. If any damage/loss is sustained to any of the school building or
school equipment a charge will be made to parents.
Afternoon School KS2 1.00pm to 3.15pm KS1 1.00pm to 3.15pm
Early Years Unit 12.45 to 3.15pm
Children should arrive no earlier than 8.45am. The playgrounds are supervised from
8.50am. Please ensure that your child gets to school on time as lateness disrupts lessons.
All children should enter school at the appropriate rear door in the morning. At the end
of the day, Key Stage 2 children leave through the front door.
All Key Stage 1 children will be collected from the playground at the rear of the school
and will be returned there at 3.15pm by their teacher.
The time spent on teaching during a normal week is 21 hours and 25 minutes for Key
Stage 1 pupils and 23 hours and 30 minutes for Key Stage 2 pupils.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
As a result of a parent survey, parents overwhelmingly voted in favour of the
introduction of school uniform. It is therefore expected that all children will wear a
school uniform consisting of grey or black, skirt or trousers worn with a white blouse,
shirt or polo shirt and with a royal blue sweatshirt, jumper or cardigan. Sweatshirts and
cardigans are on sale in the school office. Girls may wear blue and white striped or
checked school dresses in the summer term. The governors and staff encourage a sense
of identity within the school. We also ask that children come to school in sensible shoes.
ALL CLOTHING, ESPECIALLY COATS AND SWEATSHIRTS SHOULD BE
CLEARLY MARKED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME.
Lost property is kept in a box in the entrance hall. It is disposed of at the end of each
term.
ABSENCE
If your child is away from school due to illness please let us know by telephone or
letter. If we do not hear from you then the school will call to check why your child is
absent. This will ensure the safety of our pupils. If you need your child to be away from
school for any other reason, please discuss this with the school office. A holiday form
may be obtained from the school office. The Education Welfare Officer checks our
registers every week and will visit you if your child has frequent or long absences.
You must send a note or telephone if you wish to take your child out of school during
the school day. A verbal message from a child is not acceptable. Children must be
collected from the school office by a known adult. When collecting your child during
the school day you will be asked to complete a form indicating the reason for your
child’s absence.
ACCIDENTS OR ILLNESS AT SCHOOL
Parents are asked to fill in a form giving an address and a telephone number where
they can be contacted should children become ill or have an accident during the school
day. It is vital that you provide us with this information and keep it up to date so that
we can act in the best interests of your child.
Where there is a minor accident at school the office staff will enter your child’s name in
the accident log and send a letter home with your child outlining the nature of the
injury.
MEDICINES
DATA PROTECTION
We prefer not to administer medicine at
school. If you wish us to do so you must visit
the school office to sign a consent form.
Medicine should be clearly labelled with your
child’s name and instructions for
administration. Parents should be aware that
the school will not be responsible for
remembering to give the correct dosage at the
appropriate time, though we will do our best.
If your child needs an asthma inhaler this
must be left at the school office, clearly
marked with your child’s name and dosage
instructions, together with a completed and
signed consent form.
The school and the Local Authority are registered with the data protection agency and
follow their guidance regarding all matters of disclosure about pupils. By law
information may only be disclosed to other persons in accordance with this registration.
The school keeps basic information about pupils on computer to assist with efficient
organisation of the school and the individual’s educational needs. Security measures
are taken to ensure the information is kept confidential.
Children use computers in the computer suite and in their classrooms but they do not
have access to personal records.
If you are concerned about any aspect of personal information held on computer please
speak to the Headteacher.
