Become “THE EXPERIENCE” a Crime is in white Scene for this option. Investigator! Experience the fascinating world of forensic science in this
spectacular hands-on exhibition related to the hit TV series.
Enter the Briefing Theater for a fast-paced
introduction from your supervisor, CSI’s lead
investigator Gil Grissom. “Keep an open mind,”
he warns. “Remember, the dead can’t speak
for themselves. Listen to what the evidence is
saying.”
Then begin your journey to solve a mystery
as you enter one of three very different crime
scenes:
• A House Collided — A car has run
through the living room window of a
house in a quiet suburb. In the driver’s
seat, a man is slumped over with his
seatbelt on. In the living room, there are
muddy shoeprints and drops of blood.
• Who Got Served? — A woman wearing
a waitress uniform has been found
dead in an alley behind an old Las Vegas
motel. Tossed nearby is a photo of her,
which has been ripped in half.
• No Bones About It! — A hiker has stumbled
across what looks like a human skull
sticking out of the ground. The skull has a
visible hole in it; and among the remains,
there are still tattered remnants of a coat
and what appears to be a backpack.
Exit the scene and begin your investigation at
a large wall of crime scene photos and clues
you may have missed. Analyze evidence in
lab areas with multiple stations for evidence
testing. Compare fingerprints, examine blood
spatter patterns, analyze blood-alcohol levels,
test clothing fibers, DNA evidence, and much
more.
Finally the moment of truth! Present your findings
in a recreation of the office of Gil Grissom,
your CSI Supervisor. Using your scientific findings,
answer a series of multiple-choice questions
on touch screens. With feedback from
Grissom, you’ll find out if you’ve cracked the
case!
CSI ROCHESTER:
featuring the Albert R. Stone Collection
Murder, burglary, lost persons, drug trafficking—all were
reported in local newspaper articles accompanied by images
with the credit line “Photo by Stone.” Between 1902
and 1934 newspaper photographers Albert R. Stone and
his son Daniel covered the crime scene in Rochester.
Investigations such as the Anna Schumacher murder
made headlines. Progress was tracked daily with stories
and photos. Seventeen-year-old Anna Schumacher disappeared
while visiting her sister’s grave in Holy Sepulchre
cemetery. Posses, sheriffs, and volunteers searched
the area for days before two deputies on motorcycles followed
a rabbit down a trail in the woods and located her
makeshift grave.
Another murder investigation involved the Black Hand,
an extortion ring. Rochester detectives found the body
of Francesco Manzello in a gully in Webster. In the photograph,
detectives, men from the coroner’s office, and
bystanders gather around the body as it is lifted into the
wicker basket (i.e. body bag) for transport to the morgue.
A case with an interesting twist began with a woman’s
report of a bound and gagged boy being thrown into the
Barge Canal. The authorities took it seriously and dragged
the canal. When he saw the newspaper story, Edgar A.
Coapman realized what the woman must have witnessed.
He came forward to report that he had tossed his dog
Whiskey into the canal to give him a bath.
The Albert R. Stone collection of 13,000 glass plate negatives
chronicles the first quarter of the 20th century in the
Rochester region, including World War I, the flu epidemic,
prohibition, transportation changes, and the lives of ordinary
citizens. To access these images, go to the RMSC
library and collections catalog http://libcat.rmsc.org.
Sixty-five million
dinosaurs seem as
vigorous as ever,
but there are hidden
pressures in the environment.
With the
devastating impact
of a giant meteor,
these magnificent creatures finally disappear
from Earth. The latest generation of realistic
computer graphics depicts the dinosaurs’
harsh battles in the volcano-polluted world
just before the end of their era. A BBC/Discovery/TV
Shown with “Mysteries of the Great Lakes” as
a double feature through October 3.
Giant-screen Film
Actually powerful
predators of
nonetheless appeal
to us with their
intelligence and curiosity.
Using exotic
locations, current
scientific research
and encounters
between people and dolphins, this beautiful
film presents a rare and close-up view
into the world of our favorite ocean animal.
Follow dolphin researcher Dr. Kathleen
Dudzinski as she studies dolphin-to-dolphin
communication. Narrated by Pierce Brosnan,
music by Sting.
All star shows include a point-out of currently visible stars, constellations and planets using the planetarium’s mighty star projector.
life and death of the sun
(closes october 2)
We are completely dependent on our Sun, a
giant ball of gases heated by a nuclear fire
we cannot control. How much do we really
know about this awesome star? How long can
it continue shining? What will happen when
it runs out of fuel? You’ll see ultra-detailed
imagery of solar eruptions from NASA’s new
Solar Dynamics Observer spanning the Star
Theater dome at huge scale.
Length: 60 min. Ages 6 to adult.
black holes (opens October 9)
Once an oddity of theoretical physics and a
toy of science fiction, black holes are now
recognized as key features of our universe,
lurking at the centers of most galaxies. Why
do astronomers think black holes are real?
How do we find them? What is known—and
unknown—about what happens inside a
black hole’s dreaded event horizon? Could a
black hole hurt us? Could wormholes really
offer shortcuts to faraway regions of space
and time? Explore these and other questions
about this favorite topic.
Length: 60 min. Ages 6 to adult.
My Planets
Especially for young children, this friendly introduction
to the planetarium features worlds
in our solar system as they appear in the sky
and through a telescope.
Length: 35 min. Children ages 3 to 5 and the
adults with them.
Holiday laser 2010
your favorite holiday songs back-to-back
without a break, choreographed with dancing
laser light against the starry background of the
planetarium sky. The playlist includes Vivaldi’s
“Winter,” favorites by Mannheim Steamroller
and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and other
festive selections in pop and classical styles.
RMSC appeal letter
Dear Friends
Your support, beyond your membership dues, will allow the RMSC to extend rich experiences to families,
to students, and to disadvantaged members of our community.
With additional support, students will experience hands-on science through RMSC outreach programming.
Through our Community Partner Pass Program, more than 11,000 economically disadvantaged
children, families, and developmentally disabled individuals gain access to the museum free of charge;
access to a world of wonder and discovery not often seen as possible because of economic and personal
circumstances. All are welcome at the RMSC, and with your help, more can be inspired every day.
Help us
continue to
bring you great
new exhibits!
The RMSC goal, in partnership with friends like you, is to create the next generation of enthusiastic learners as well as people who will
become our region’s inventors and entrepreneurs. As our partner, we invite you to make a gift to the RMSC Fall Appeal to help us attain this
lofty goal.
Beginning October 2nd, we will feature CSI: The Experience, an exciting hands-on, exploratory, multisensory
experience in the world of crime scene investigation. Visitors will investigate a “real” crime scene
and interact via video with favorite characters from the hit television show as well as real-life forensic
experts, advancing critical thinking skills through forensic investigation, scientific inquiry, and technology.
We want to make this experience available to those who need to be enthused by learning.
The CSI exhibit is a great entry point for getting students interested in science and science careers.
Forensic studies in colleges and universities are booming because of the CSI franchise and we have
an opportunity to continue to inspire kids to pursue careers in science. However, we need help from the
community. For example, a gift of $110 could enable 10 students to experience the CSI exhibit.
Other examples of the importance of appeal gifts are the following:
• 10 gifts of $100 to the Fall Appeal provide the opportunity for RMSC Staff to engage more than 3,000 students in science education
at Science Exploration Days at St. John Fisher College in the Spring or inspire a developmentally disabled theater company for
several weeks.
• 20 gifts of $50 to the Fall Appeal send RMSC Delivers education outreach program to three school science fairs in the Spring where
they will interact with thousands of students in our community.
Gifts of any amount are important and critical to our service to the community. As you can read above, your gift along with others will help
us serve our community by creating fantastic new experiences for all in our community to enjoy and provide access to those who are unable
to afford admission.
Your support also helps us to provide this type of exciting programming and interactive exhibits for all in our community to enjoy. We hope
you will visit and bring your family and friends to enjoy this exciting experience.
As you assess the importance of a gift to the RMSC Fall Appeal among the many requests for support you receive this holiday season, please
reflect on the important contributions the RMSC makes to our region’s families, schools, and future prosperity.
Your support makes it possible for us to continue to serve the community.
We thank you for your consideration of this appeal.
ARTWalk Extension
Project
In late 2009, stimulus funding through the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act enabled the City of Rochester to move forward
with plans to expand the popular and highly successful ARTWalk
project. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the RMSC began
planning with the ARTWalk Extension Project Team to redesign
the central plaza and sidewalk area along East Avenue from the
Strasenburgh Planetarium to Goodman Street.
New Streetscape
The new design will create an inviting space for social interaction, where visitors can explore
a Fossil Walk, a Rochester Inventors Walk, and a Constellation Walk. Plantings will
focus on a sustainable environment theme.
Centerpiece Artwork
The RMSC made a commitment to fund the site’s centerpiece public
art installation. A team of two artists (Living Lenses) based in Berkeley,
California has been selected to design an iconic sculpture for
the front plaza.
The Artists
International artists Louise Bertelsen
and Po Shu Wang have collaborated
under the name Living Lenses since
1999. Their works invite exploration
of light, sound, music and natural
forces through direct experience.
The Artwork
Living Lenses will create an interactive artwork called Traveling
Through Stillness, consisting of a large sculptural ring tipped on an
angle. The artwork’s title references the idea that we are all on a
journey together aboard “Spaceship Earth.” The RMSC’s Technical
Advisory Group (TAG) will collaborate with Living Lenses to create
an interactive component of the experience inside the museum.
