President’s Message
A
s many of you know, Jerry Motta, our intrepid Newsletter Editor and
Webmaster was, for many years, a professor at the University of Maryland.
As a group of us were sitting around the table at lunch the other day I remarked
to Jerry that I had received a rather terse email indicating the newsletter
deadline had passed and that any new items would have to wait until the June
newsletter. I also indicated that the general call reminder for items had not been
given. My word, the clock can roll back with such ease. For a few seconds I
was taken back about 45 years and was face to face with a stern college professor
who was contemplating what to do with a lame excuse that had been used so
NCJOC President
Bob Engh
many times before by so many students! I am happy to say that I was given a little extra time for this
note. Thank you, Jerry, and lesson learned.*
That brings me to my first point of the newsletter . Recently, Michelle Dawson and Suzanne Motta
sent out a letter concerning Judging and judges training for the September Concours. To date, they
have received only a few responses even though they sent along postage paid envelopes. I cannot hope
to replicate Jerry’s professorial look but it is very important that the forms are completed and returned.
On a lighter note and to the fun parts:
Late breaking news – John Larson takes 1 st and Michelle Dawson and Vic Powell take 3 rd at the British
Car show in Lewes Delaware – Congratulations! A small group made the relatively short drive to
Lewes and were treated to a healthy dose of spectacular seashore weather, superb camaraderie and, of
course, a weekend of our wonderful British cars. This was so much more than just a group going to a
show, as it was so thoroughly planned by Bob and Betty Andrews. We need to give a very strong
thank you to Bob and Betty.
Events:
• May 13 th is the British Car show at City Imports in Glen Burnie, MD, for pre-1980 cars. This
is a show to benefit Partners in Care Maryland and carries a $15 entry fee. My 66 is not ready
but we will be supportive spectators to this very worthwhile event. Pre register by calling
Dennis Pye at (410) 768-6661. We look forward to a good showing.
• May 21 st is “In Vino Veritas”, is a wine and cheese tasting along with an exotic car display at
St John’s College in Annapolis, MD. We will send out a full description of the event, as it
takes place at the civilized hours of 4:30 – 7:30pm. The location is terrific and fits with our
desire to support events throughout the sprawling NCJOC geographic area.
• May 29 th is judges training at my residence. The garage will be complete and we look forward
to refreshing currently certified judges and qualifying new members. Lunch will be served and
I believe you should all have a good time. Please let me know in advance if you plan to attend
so I can do a little preparation. I realize that this is Memorial Day Weekend but the calendar
has made it difficult to fit in all of the necessary training dates.
•
”Garage Mahal” progress. This is certainly turning out to be quite an exercise. All of the walls and
ceiling have been completed and painted. It took quite an effort and a lot of “mud” , tape, sandpaper
and paint. The area is so much brighter. The new workbench is in and all cabinets have been assem-
Join the Club 7-10 July for a drive to Dayton, Ohio and a
visit to the Air Force Aviation Museum. This is the
“World’s largest military aviation Museum with more than
360 aerospace vehicles and missiles on display.” For
detailed information see February Roar.
Some club members may already be in Columbus, for the
Challenge Championship These dates allow those at the
Challenge to make the 60 mile drive and join us at the
Museum on Friday the 8th. Due to Museum exhibit floor
space and the additional tours offered, this can be an all day
event or shaped to meet your own interests and endurance.
See the February Roar for more details.
On Saturday we plan to visit the Packard Car Museum, also
located in Dayton.
The Hilton Garden Inn Beavercreek, (937) 458-2650, will
be the center point for this stay. Call the Hilton direct as
is 3520 New Germany-Trebein Road Dayton) We got an
AARP rate of $107 per night. There are other
accommodations on the I-State as we come into town. We
are planning one group evening meal.
bled and installed. Now I just need to go through everything and
find just the proper cabinet or drawer to use for storage. Finally, I
am not sure whether the floor will be complete this summer because
a small part of existing concrete must be repaired before we
can apply an epoxy finish. There has been some advice indicating
a potential concrete cure time requirement of 60-90 days before
the epoxy is applied. If this is the case then I must wait – darn!
In any case, when it is fully complete I will share my experience
in detail. What I will share now is that there are no before
to keep my prized Jaguars in such a space!
6 May 2011 The Jaguars Roar
Special Event
Baltimore Grand Prix Car
Corral Participation
By Bill Moore
The BGP will be run 2,3,4 September (Labor Day weekend) and
will include the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) race on
Saturday and the feature INDY Car race on Sunday. The RSR
Jaguar team, led by Paul Gentilozzi, will be in the ALMS race. For
NCJOC members not familiar with Jaguar racing, view
RSRJaguar.com for information. For information on ALMS racing
series view americanlemans.com.
Paul Gentilozzi is a friend of NCJOC and has agreed to give
our Club members attending BGP a personally guided tour and
briefing on the RSR Jaguar racing team and the cars running in the
BGP. This will be an opportunity to also meet the drivers and crew
members. During the Cadillac Grand Prix in Washington several
years ago the Club visited Paul and his Jaguar TransAm team
before that race--spent over an hour with Paul, the car and the
team, enjoyed the hospitality of the team—great photo
opportunity. We can look forward to a similar event this year.
Specific day, Friday or Saturday has not yet been set.
The BGP is organizing a Car Corral and has invited Jaguar to
participate. The purpose on this message is to determine how
many NCJOC members would like to attend the race and display
their Jaguars (of any vintage) in the Jaguar portion of the Car
Corral. In order to respond to the BGP organizers your indication
of interest is requested. Reply to Bill Moore (genrlbill@aol.
com) or call at 703-827-9509.
Here are some details. First, view for general information
about the race weekend. Now to the Car Club Package (CCP)
offered by BGP:
There are CCP for either three days or two days. Three day
includes the INDY Car race on Sunday, which might not be of
interest to all NCJOC members since ALMS race is on Saturday.
Assuming primary interest will be for two day CCP here is the cost
and options:
CCP 2, ($150): Two day, member and vehicle admission (see
note*, below) Additional passengers in car require Grounds Only
ticket ($30). (No additional charge to visit the ALMS paddock
area)
and beverage service in Car Corral area, however, individually
prepared food can be consumed in area. Coolers are OK. There is a
10% discount available when prepaying for 50 members and
vehicle. Also there may be some amenities provided by Jaguar
dealerships in area.
Other Options:
Attend the BGP without participating in the Car Corral,
cost would be $30 Grounds Only admission and $30 general
admission parking. Total would be $60.
Recommendations and considerations:
NCJOC should participate as a club. Other area Jaguar
clubs are interested in being in a Jaguar Car Corral. JCNA has not
offered to organize a Jaguar Car Corral and is not expected to
provide any interest or support.
NCJOC should plan participation in this event as we do
with our other club functions--as a group. The two day CCP
provides excellent opportunity to not only visit RSR Jaguar, but also
advance our understanding about sports car racing. We could have a
mini-club Car show, maybe a peoples’ choice judging among our
members or let our Concours Judges “practice”, have a couple of
lunches together (working around the BGP catering rules), have a
discussion session on ALMS racing, etc. Suggestions?
We should work with BGP to coordinate support from area
Jaguar dealerships and other sponsors interested in Jaguar racing;
nothing specific yet identified. Support from Jaguar Cars North
America (JCNA) has not yet been offered nor solicited. At Lime
Rock and Petite Le Mans last year Jaguar Cars were involved in
hospitality and promotion; RSR Jaguar supported.
Let Bill Moore know soonest of your interest in the race so
that NCJOC can make a preliminary commitment to BGP about our
intentions for Car Corral participation.
Rocketsports Jaguar XKR GT2
CCP 1, ($250): Three day, member and vehicle admission
Note* CCP benefits:
• Reserved parking in Car Corral next to ALMS paddock.
• Reserved grandstand seat at Turn 10 (not Grounds Only
ticket).
• Controlled on-track parade laps either Friday or Saturday for
Clubs with 20 or more cars.
• Pass for all paddocks.
• Car clubs purchasing 10 vehicle passes may set up one 10x10
tent
• Clubs purchasing 20 passes may set up one 20x20 tent
CCP restrictions: Clubs must use BGP caterer for formal food

Feature Article
Norman Dewis Shares the
XKExperience at the 2011 AGM.
John Larson
T
he 53rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Jaguar Clubs of North
America on March 25-27 was a stupendous success. Thanks to the
organizational acumen of Ron Gaertner in the host Virginia Jaguar Club,
and the VJC President David Harrison’s major planning coup, those of us
in attendance were treated to an afternoon seminar by the legendary
Norman Dewis. This brief note is intended, not as a review of the entire
AGM, but only as a commentary on the Dewis lecture that I attended.
Norman Dewis joined Jaguar Cars on January 1, 1952 as chief test
engineer for product development. As chief test engineer, Dewis was
responsible for stamping his approval on the road-worthiness of all Jaguar
models from that time until his official retirement in 1985. His
organizational skills, his integrity, his focus on excellence and his intelligent
reading of the myriad signals emanating from design flaws under the duress
of extreme driving all contributed immeasurably to the quality of three
decades of Jaguar cars. In his retirement years, Dewis has functioned as an
ambassador-at-large for Jaguar Cars in his many lecture and commemorative
festival appearances.
The Dewis seminar commenced on the afternoon of March 25 at the
Wyndham Virginia Crossings, a delightful, colonial-style conference center
just north of Richmond, VA. After a brief introduction by VJC President
David Harrison, Dewis appeared before a standing-room-only crowd of at
least 200 enthusiasts. Dewis, at 90 years old, presents a short stature, trim
and compact in the manner of race car drivers and jet test pilots – a full head
of silvery hair, twinkling eyes, and enthusiastic demeanor. Had there been a
movie, years ago, of “The Norman Dewis Story,” a director could have done
no better than to have cast Paul Newman in the leading role. Dewis
appeared in a casual jacket with hunting shoulder patches and a dark shirt
accentuated with a western-style bolo tie adopted, no doubt, from his affinity
with the American West as experienced in his travels to the Jaguar test
facility near Phoenix, AZ, and from his oft-times visits with Terry Larson’s
legendary XKC and XKD tours in the far west.
Dewis commenced his talk in somewhat hesitant tones, as if getting
situated to the US Eastern Time Zone from his cross-Atlantic travels, much
in the manner that an old Jaguar starts up with rough idle from a cold choke
on the SU carburetors. In short order, however, he warmed to a smoothrunning
series of reminiscences about his early days with Jaguar Cars. Since
the theme of the 2011 AGM was the 50th Anniversary of the world’s
introduction to the XKE, Dewis regaled us with episodes leading up to the
XKE’s appearance at Geneva in March of 1961.
Dewis has the story-teller’s gift of recalling detailed encounters
from 50 years ago as if the events had happened yesterday. He gave due
credit to the entire team, the “Jaguar family,” including Sir William Lyons,
Bill Heynes, Bob Knight, Malcolm Sayer and others involved in developing
Jaguar cars. In his stories, we raced with him at 175 mph in the short-nosed
XKD, and vicariously sat by his side in the long-nosed XKD as he passed
arch-rival Karl Kling’s Mercedes 300SLR at 192 mph on the Mulsanne
straight at the 1955 Le Mans.
We struggled with him, in his recounting, through the testing of the
From Top:
first, rudimentary E1A prototype in 1957 with its 2.4-liter engine, and then through the agonies of the E2A model in the 1960 Le
Mans. Finally, the first production XKE, registered as “9600 HP,” made its way to the Geneva Show on March 15, 1961. Dewis
California-based Jaguar parts
what it describes as a superior
“square” E-Type clutch fluid reservoir.
The company says the crisp mold detail and
AGM (Continued from page 7)
regaled us with a dramatic recounting of his driving a second
XKE (“77 RW”) to Geneva from Coventry on a hasty, overnight
run in order to provide a demonstration car to impress the media
at the hill-climb just outside of Geneva. Some of the reporters
showed white knuckles going 138 mph on the down-hill run.
In a fitting, fiftieth-anniversary coda at Geneva in
March 2011, Dewis reported overhearing a young couple
strolling among the newest Jaguars assembled along with the
heritage XKE models. The young woman passing by an
exquisite 1961 XKE asked her partner, “John, is this the new
Jaguar?”
The seminar concluded with sales and a book-signing
of, “Norman Dewis of Jaguar: Developing the Legend” (PJ
Publishing, Ltd: Barton on Sea, England, 2006). Jaguar
enthusiasts world-wide are indebted to Paul Skilleter (with
Norman Dewis) for that impressive, 575-page work of historical
research and fastidious scholarship. – JL

reparations for the Nation’s Capital Jaguar Owners’ Club’s
47th Annual Concours d’Elegance are underway and
progressing efficiently for our Sunday, September 18, 2011
Concours event. The foremost purpose of our NCJOC Concours
is to encourage owners of Jaguars to preserve, maintain, and
present their Jaguars in as clean and authentic condition as
possible. For NCJOC, the concours is the premier event of the
year. The Reston Town Center event rivals any Concours on the
East Coast.
Each month, I try to provide information that will help you
compete, not only in the NCJOC Concours, but also in any
Concours’ of our sister Clubs.
At the conclusion of each JCNA Concours year, which runs
from January 1st through November 30th, JCNA presents the
North American Concours d’Elegance Awards three deep in each
of the Special, Champion and Driven Division classes to
members of JCNA affiliate members and JCNA members at
large. These annual awards are determined by averaging the
entrant’s three (3) highest scores during the Concours year.
Additionally, scores that are achieved at the biannual Challenge
Championship and annual Western States meeting qualify for the
inclusion of the three (3) score average.
The first part of the Concours is the “Vehicle Verification” or the
Safety Check. At our Concours, we conduct the Safety Check as
a stand-alone entity. The entrants drive to the Registration Tent,
check in, receive their packets and then drive to the Safety
Check. The entrant must make sure all headlights, brake lights,
turn signals, back up lights, fog lights, and horns are checked and
in good working order. If one of these systems does not work,
the entrant will have 15 minutes to fix the problem. Points will
be deducted for any malfunction of these systems and will affect
your overall score. Once the entrants complete the Safety Check,
the Jaguars are then lined up on Market Street for the
continuation of competing. The exterior judge has the authority
to require the bonnet, doors, windows and boot be opened or
closed to properly evaluate the fit and finish of the bodywork.
The interior judge has the authority to judge the entire interior of
the car.
One of the major concerns I hear about the Concours is the
question of authenticity. According to the JCNA Rule Book,
“Replacement parts, regardless of the manufacturer, are
considered authentic only if they meet the exact specifications
and appearance of the original item or material. Almost correct
items are not authentic.” You never realize the importance of
“authenticity” until you plan to place your Jag in the
Championship Category.
The Jaguar’s Roar May 2011 9
owners put a CD player in the car. The XJS was not equipped with
a CD player. We have to remove it and just put in a radio. At this
late date I do not think we not be able to find the exact radio for
this Jag and have it installed. Also, the car has four Yokohoma
Tires but the spare is a Perelli. Vic has been trying for weeks to
secure another Yokohoma tire, but has had no luck in finding the
correct tire in Northern Virginia. In order for us to compete in the
Championship Division with this incredibly beautiful Jag we need
five matching tires. Well, life got in the way and our priorities
have shifted since we purchased this new Jag. So this year we will
place REDS V12 in the Driven Division. Next year we should be
better prepared for Championship competition.
Another big question I hear, and have personally experienced, is
the use of the Leaper, particularly on my other red XJS – “REDS
JAG”. I have researched this question and have learned that
leapers were never officially offered for XK120s, XK140s, E-
Types or XJSs and are considered not authentic when present on
these models! I like the Leaper, so it will stay on the convertible
with the white walls. After all, this car continues to win a Best of
Show in British Car Shows!
In late September of 2010, my Husband, Vic Powell, and I with
the help of Bob and Joyce Engh, purchased a red XJS V12
Jaguar convertible with 25,000 miles on it – “REDS V12.”. We
thought it was perfect and would not need anything. We could
compete in the Championship Division. Not so fast! The former

icturesque Lewes, Delaware’s annual British Car Show is always
P a popular event with Club members, not only for its visitor
friendly hospitality, historic interest and quaint shops and restaurants,
but also its annual mixed marque British car show that attracts entrants
from all along the eastern shore states. Morgan, MG, Lotus, Rolls
Royce, Triumphs, WWII Land Rovers, you name it, along with a
healthy representation of Jaguars, are among the one hundred or so
vehicles typically on display. It’s a ’popular vote’ event sponsored by
the Lewes Chanber of Commerce to raise funds for the town’s Historical
Society. Jags compete side by side with marques from the same
vintage years, which makes for some very interesting encounters. It’s
a low pressure event and a nice way to start the driving season.
