Presidents Message
IF YOU REBUILD IT, THEY WILL COME
ill Foshay is a generous man and a country gentleman, nonpareil. On April 10, Foshay
B welcomed a total of about 40 members of the NCJOC and our
neighboring colleagues of the Virginia Jaguar Club to view his astounding
collection of Jaguars and other fine, collectible automobiles. The exquisitely
sunny, mild spring day, with red-buds and dogwoods blooming in the
countryside, provided an opportunity for Jaguar driving delights to members of
the NCJOC and VJC as they converged on Foshay’s 1,000-acre estate and antebellum
manse in the rural precincts of Culpeper, Virginia.
The “receiving line” for our arrival consisted of about 25 late-model Jaguars
arrayed along the driveway between the mansion and the horse paddock. In
addition to these market-ready Jaguars, the large barn/garage area held close to
100 other collectible Mustangs and Camaros, several Ferrari’s, and an
assortment of “stray cats” rescued from barns, fields and yards over the past 15
years. Foshay’s gifted reconstruction expert, Peter Hemingway, claims that
Foshay never saw a Jaguar deal that he didn’t like, and he often buys two of each. This self-styled
Noah of neglected and abused automobiles had arranged a double-line of forlorn Mustangs stretching
up and over the hill behind the barn as if waiting to board some mythic mechanic’s ark to salvation.
Unlike other collectors who aspire to maintaining car museums, Foshay’s approach is to rescue,
rebuild and resell the favorites of the past. Thus, we were able to touch, open hoods and doors, sit in,
and inspect many of the cars for sale. Foshay’s sales agent, Greg Butler, compiled for our visit a
special brochure describing 35 Jaguars, and copies of that listing will soon be made available to
NCJOC members.
Foshay treated us all to a lunch of BBQ chicken/pork with the proper country fixings on the side, a
wonderful selection of cheeses, and a selection of wine, beer and soft drinks. Club members spread
among the wood-paneled rooms and the veranda to enjoy their repast, and to get acquainted with
“friends they had not yet met” from each of our clubs. David Harrison, president of the VJC, declared
that the event was the best yet collaboration between our two clubs.
As a coda to the day in Jaguar country, 13 members from the NCJOC and VJC repaired to “Camp
Camellia” where Sherman Taffel and Camellia hosted an evening dinner to celebrate our
collaborative outing. Sherman provided a tour of the rustic-look/modern-finish log cabin and the art
studio over which he has labored for the past three years. And, of course, we reviewed Sherman’s
latest additions to his Jaguar/Jensen/Dodge collection housed in the quonset garage. Jaguaring back
to home provided a smooth finish for the day.
JCNA AGM 2010 Summary
The Jaguar’s Roar April,2010 5
John C. Larson
The JAGIN club (Jaguar Association of Greater Indiana) threw a
swell party for the Annual General Meeting. Business meetings of
the JCNA Board of Directors on Friday, March 26 and the Saturday
meeting of all club representatives were interspersed with a variety of
activities: a convivial reception and buffet at the Stutz Bearcat
Museum; a tour of the historic and magnificently-preserved Union
Station; a sighting of the world’s only XJ13 Jaguar racing machine
from 1966; and a captivating, first-person account by Gary Bartlett of
his reconstruction of a historic XKSS racer and its fateful crash in
the 2006 running of the Mille Miglia.
This report focuses on the business accomplished at the 2010 AGM,
and its implications for local clubs. The fun sidebars, and the 1,200-
mile, roundtrip commute to the AGM remain for another telling.
The JCNA is a confederacy of local clubs. The primary role of the
JCNA is to support the operations of local Jaguar clubs by providing
standardized regulations for Concours d’Elegance, the rally and the
slalom functions. After all, you cannot have national competitions
without national rules. Also, the JCNA offers various technical,
procedural and business supports along with the publication of the
Jaguar Journal, the world’s oldest Jaguar magazine in continuous
publication since 1955. These resources, along with the JCNA.org
website, enable member clubs to maintain consistent rules in their
club events, allow for the resolution and arbitration of disputes, and
provide other resources for maintaining technical expertise,
communications and camaraderie with other Jaguar clubs throughout
North America.
Attendance.
The JCNA comprises 62 local clubs in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
From this total, 51 clubs sent representatives to the 2010 AGM, and
10 other clubs were represented by proxy votes. In the governance of
JCNA, each club is designated two votes in the AGM proceedings.
In addition, the JCNA is divided into six geographic regions, each of
which has two regional delegates with one vote per delegate. The
immediate past-president and the representative from Jaguar Cars
also have one vote each.
AGM. "Objects in This Photo Appear More Serious Than They
Are."
Outgoing JCNA President Steve Kennedy is Awarded a Silver XK120 in Recognition
of his Two Years of Service.
Membership
Maintaining and expanding club memberships is a local and a
national interest. The JCNA saw a 5.6 percent decline in
memberships from 2008 (n = 5,853) to 2009 (n = 5,525). Over that
same period, the NCJOC reported a decline of 2.3 percent from 2008
(n = 220) to 2009 (n = 215). Over the two-year period from 2007-
2009, the JCNA reported a decline in memberships of 7.8 percent,
and NCJOC reported a decline in memberships of 11.2 percent. At
the same time, the sales of Jaguar cars nationally reported a decline
of 19.4 percent from 2008 to 2009. Clearly, local Jaguar club
membership roles are influenced by new-car sales only to a moderate
degree.
Local clubs have an interest in maintaining their current active
memberships, and in cultivating future memberships. These two
objectives may overlap to a great extent, but may also diverge in
2010 Concours Planning Update
By Michelle Dawson, Concours Director
oncours planning is proceeding on schedule. Here is a run down of
C current projects underway for our Concours Weekend of September
4 and 5, 2010:
Again, this year, Matt Shew of Shewiscal will provide music and
supply broadcast equipment for our use during the Concours. Last year
Matt figured out the best way to place the speakers at either end of Market
Street. Thus, great music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s will waft all
around Market Street during Sunday’s Concours.’
Jerry Motta and I are working on the Pre-Concours Pamphlet to accompany
the Registration form which will be sent to all NCJOC members
and other JCNA affiliated Clubs in late April and early May 2010.
I met with Roger Wildermuth and discussed the budget and have received
several checks for Rosenthal’s contribution to our Concours.
Roger is hosting a reception on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the
dealership (5092 Spring Hill Road, Vienna, Virginia 22182) from 8: 00
p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Master Chef Roberto Donna will whip up delicious
cuisine creations as enthusiasts enjoy the artistry and beauty of the 2010
Jaguars in the showroom.
The information about our Concours is listed on the website of Reston
Town Center. To access this information, click http://www.
restontowncenter.com, click events, click the September 2010 Calendar,
and click on the date of our event on Sunday, September 5, 2010.
Roger has provided the money to redo the date on the banner that will
fly over Reston Town Center during the month of August up to our Concours
event. The banner is now in production for the new date of September
5, 2010.
Jerry Motta has sent the information about our Concours to JCNA and it
is now listed on that website, http://www.jcna.com.
I have signed the contract with the Hyatt Regency at Reston Town Center
for the room block of 25 rooms for the weekend of our Concours -
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (September 3, 4, 5, 2010) -- at $109.00 a
night. The cut off date is Friday, August 20, 2010. Reservations can be
made by calling Hyatt’s toll-free Reservations Number, 800-233-1234 or
by calling the Hyatt Regency at Reston directly at 703-709-1234 and
asking for the Reservations Department. Guests should simply request
the Hyatt Regency Reston and request Jaguar Owners Club Rate as referenced
above.
I have received the funds from Roger to create the 2010 Poster and the
funds to work with Joe Orens to create the 2010 Dash Plaque.
The Concours Planning Team met on April 17, 2010 at the home of
Mary Beth and Alan Hemer and finalized many of the loose ends.
Overview of Concours Judging
Judging Jaguars is one of the most exciting but difficult challenges at
any Concours as the Jags are nothing short of exquisite. Much of the
subjectivity of judging has been eliminated by specific rules and requirements
established by JCNA. Judges are required to utilize uniform score
sheets which specify the parts of the car that must be evaluated, such as
the engine compartment, boots, tires, wheels, interior, exterior and
safety check. Judging is carried out by judging teams which provides a
consensus approach to evaluation and provides greater consistency in
judging. Judging teams are under the authority of the Chief Judge whose
responsibility it is to assure the integrity of the judging, acting as a resource
concerning JCNA rules, and resolving any disputes that arise on
the Concours Field. This year, Doug Sherwood has graciously accepted
the responsibilities of NCJOCs’ Chief Judge. Last month, we reviewed
the Operations Verification (Safety Check) sheet. In the ensuing
months, the Concours Corner will review the other 3 forms for Concours
judging, as well as provide the newest Concours rules and regulations
changes from the most recent AGM meeting in March 2010.
In addition to participating in the Concours, we also need Members to
volunteer as there are many opportunities for the day of the Concours –
Registration, Safety Check, Field Staff, Scorers, and of course Judging.
Our Concours event typically draws award-winning cars from throughout
the East Coast and last year featured Jaguars spanning a 61 year history.
It is my hope and that of the august Concours Planning Committee that
many NCJOC members will participate in our 46th Annual Concours
and/or volunteer in any capacity to ensure this is the best NCJOC Concours
in 2010. Happy Motoring! MD
Late May Club drive to
Winchester, Virginia
ne Night, Two Days, Three States!
O Mary and I will lead a Springtime Scenic Byways drive, 22 and 23
May. Come out and join other NCJOC members for this excursion into
the West. We will leave from the Silver Dinner in Rockville, Maryland,
Saturday May 22 morning at 10 AM. The Silver Diner is located in Mid-
Pike Plaza at Old Georgetown Road and Rockville Pike (just across from
Manhattan Jaguar). We will travel both Maryland and Virginia Scenic
routes then overnight in Winchester’s Historic George Washington Hotel.
Pack a lunch for Saturday’s drive or buy a sandwich at our first rest
stop in Point of Rocks in anticipation of our next stop for lunch. One of
Virginia’s vineyards will serve as our place of repast. The vineyard and
winery overlooking the Blue Ridge make a nice setting with inside and
outside tables with a spectacular view. We will then make our way to
Winchester, arriving in time for check-in and some free time before dinner.
We have booked a block of king rooms for $116 and available untill 5
May. Make your individual reservations by calling the George Washington
on (540) 678-4700 and ask for the “Jaguar Club Room Block.” We
have only ten (10) rooms, so book early. The George Washington is
within a block of Old Town walking streets which offer shopping, an art
gallery, a British Pub and a good Italian Restaurant. Depending upon the
size of the group, we will make dinner reservations at either the Pub or the
Restaurant. Please let me know your choice when you decide to go so I
can make the reservations. White Post Restorations will not be one of the
drive stops, as the shop is closed Saturday thru Monday.
Sunday, plan to breakfast in the hotel and then meet in the lobby for a
1030 departure to the Shenandoah Valley Museum. The Museum consists
of a plantation house and gardens. Admission is $10.00. For those who
prefer an alternative, several towns, a few miles south of Winchester, offer
antiquating and more historic homes.
This is a great scenic countryside drive over good roads. Expect to
cover 100+ miles on Saturday and from Winchester to your home on Sunday.
Let us know if you plan to make the drive at (703) 255-3292 or email
gahemer@verizon.net
About Winchester
At the top of the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia, Winchester was
once a Shawnee Indian camping ground to which Pennsylvania Quakers
came to settle in 1732. In the mid-1700's, Frederick County became the
military and political training ground for George Washington, who came
here at the age of sixteen to survey the lands of Thomas, the Sixth Lord
Fairfax. Winchester was a strategic prize of great importance during the
Civil War. In Confederate hands, with excellent roads to the north and
east, it was a serious threat to the supply lines of the Union armies trying
to reach Richmond.
In Winchester and Frederick County, the visitor will see many relics of
the area's history: the tomb of Lord Fairfax in the yard of Christ Episcopal
New Model Review
I
The Jaguar XJ – Another View
By Bob Engh
had an interesting experience the other day that I wanted to
pass along as a potential item for the Roar.
Jaguar Hunt Valley had sales training and a "ride and drive" in the
new XJ, which is finally scheduled to arrive in the May timeframe.
I had the good fortune to participate in the ride and drive
and it was an experience. As I was contemplating what to write, I
discovered that the movie LeMans (1971 starring Steve McQueen)
was being shown. The connection with the ride and drive was that
Jaguar has contracted with Davy Jones, world recognized race
driver and winner of LeMans, Daytona and other prestigious
races, to conduct the dealer sessions. Further, and unbeknown to
Davy, I later realized that a race photo taken by my brother Eric, of
Davy Jones in an XJR10, hung over my desk for almost my entire 6
years with Chesapeake Jaguar (now Jaguar Hunt Valley). Another
proof for 6 degrees of separation!
Now, for my very biased impressions. We were driving a long
wheel base car (no Vanden Plas is being designated for the new
XJ) and it was just amazing. I firmly believe that this is the finest
full size car that I have driven in my lifetime. It is clearly a vehicle
worth waiting for and will raise a lot of eyebrows. There are
marked departures from the current XJ, but Jaguar DNA is present
at a number of levels - so don't be misled, this car is all Jaguar.
Take a good look at the major Jaguar sedans over history and
you will find something from all displayed in this new car, even if
it is only a reference that has been brought up to the present.
We know that the long wheel based car is roomy and that is only
the beginning. With four climate zones, heated and cooled seats,
picnic tables, and a 600 watt sound system, this is comfort at the
highest level. As usual, the leather seating was superb and the
headliner, made of a suede material was terrific. The wood trim
has been refined (if that could be possible) where it now feels like
part of the cabin rather than just trim. The balance of things
is definitely in keeping with transition and tradition.
My first ride was as a passenger in the back seat, and I can see how
one might want to ride back there and let someone else drive. But,
the fun really starts when you get behind the wheel. The new 5L
engine is just superb. At 385 HP, there is more than enough
oomph to merge on the insanity of I 83 N! The delight in driving
the XJ for me was the handling and responsiveness. With an electronic
suspension system standard, this car acts more like a sports
car when entering a corner. There is no roll and there is no loss of
comfort. Keeping speed in check on the back roads was my biggest
challenge and it was really fun to work the shift paddles. With all
of the comfort and technology it is still, like all other Jaguars, a
driver's car. When it finally arrives, take a drive!
lights, it allows for better traffic flow. Here are the directions:
Take exit 5 (Falls Road) off of I-270. This allows you to get onto
the right lane comfortably since you'll be getting off at the next
exit, exit 6B.
Get off at exit 6B. That is route 28 in the direction of
Darnstown .
Stay on route 28 which is also Key West Blvd.
At the ninth traffic light, turn right onto Great Seneca Hwy.
At the fifth traffic light, turn left onto Kentlands Blvd. O'Donnell's
is on the fourth block on your right.
(Continued from page 5)
important directions. Currently active members most likely
comprise the active core of the local club. Historically, the
members’ connections to the club may be based on shared
technical interests for Jaguar preservation and performance.
Also, important social networks among club members and their
spouses and/or partners likely contribute to the participation in
local club events. It is important to acknowledge how strongly
those social ties contribute to the activities of local clubs.
In addition to these historical, technical and social bonds among
club members, it is also important to cultivate the bases for new
Jaguar enthusiasts. Inspiring or, dare we say, inflaming today’s
youth with a passion for Jaguars may prove a productive pathway
for bridging the Jaguar heritage with the Jaguar future.
Historically, Jaguar cars have provided an affordable means for
many consumers to acquire a car with “Grace, Pace and Space.”
In today’s economy, the new Jaguar with those attributes may lie
out of reach for many. Does this economy portent the atrophy of
active Jaguar clubs Not necessarily.
An insightful article in the March Jaguar’s Roar by our NCJOC
associate, Wayne Estrada, suggested that many Jaguar bargains
may be lurking out there in the marketplace. In today’s
marketplace, the admission price to Jaguar interests may be
considerably below $10K. Of course, such a connection to our
NCJOC depends upon a local market connected to local interests,
and those interests connected, in turn, to a membership attuned to
the refurbishment, display and enjoyment of older Jaguar cars. In
summary, enhancing membership in our club involves not just
new Jaguar acquisition, but also cultivating social ties among
members and encouraging potential enthusiasts’ interests in
restoring, displaying and driving older Jaguars.
New Officers.
Three new officers for JCNA were installed. As president, Dick
Maury from the North Georgia Jaguar Club; as vice president,
Bryan Williams from the Jaguar Club of Pittsburg; as secretary
Steve Kennedy from the Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club. Nelson
Rath continues as treasurer.
Concours planning.
As happens at every AGM, the delegates reviewed various
proposals from the Judges’ Concours Rules Committee (JCRC) to
fine-tune the management of concours events. Member clubs
may propose changes or clarifications to the JCRC, based on any
difficulties that arose during the clubs concours. The proposed
changes brought forward by the JCRC in 2010 are listed on the
JCNA.com website, along with approvals for those changes. I
summarize just a few of those changes here.
c. A lessee of the Entry, or;
d. An immediate family member of one of the above.
Under whichever of these categories the Entrant qualifies, ALL
requirements of legal ownership or entitlement must have been met
by the Entrant in his or her state or province of residence or in the
state or province of the Entry’s registration. If requested by a
concours official, that ownership or entitlement must be proven by
presenting either the Entry’s title or registration. Dealers and
professional restorers may register their personal Entries for judging;
however, they, too, must be prepared to show title or registration
documents, proving ownership of the Entry.
The Entrant, or an immediate family member, must present the Entry
for judging and answer the Judges' questions. In the historical spirit
of Concours d’Elegance, Entrants must refrain from registering
Entries solely for economic or commercial gain. “For Sale” signs will
not be allowed.
At the discretion of the host club, Jaguar dealers and professional
restorers may be encouraged to present new, rare, or historically
significant Entries and register them for Display Only Division.
Display Only Jaguars shall not be judged as part of the JCNA
competition.
Original Equipment Tires and Wheels. A 21-page listing of the
original equipment wheels and tires has been compiled as Appendix
B in the JCNA Concours Rule Book. This very detailed account will
assist owners and judges in their concours preparations.
JCNA Resource Desk
A written proposal was brought forward to establish an authoritative,
readily-available resource describing Jaguar cars, parts and
procedures. This proposal, when fully implemented, will make
available: a set of judging documents for use in concours judging; a
technical reference desk and HOTLINE to answer questions; realtime
telephone support the Chief Judges to resolve disputes on
concours day; technical information for shops and restorers; and a
listing of vendors with rare parts availability. This ambitious effort
is needed to overcome the shortcomings of misinformation in the
“blogoshpere,” and to provide members and clubs with timely,
comprehensive and authoritative information.
Coming JCNA Events.
Planning is underway to conduct the 2011 Challenge Championship
near Columbus, Ohio July 6 – 9 sponsored by the Jaguar Association
of Central Ohio. Also in 2011, our neighboring Virginia Jaguar
Club will host the AGM at a site near Richmond, VA on March 25-
27. The year 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of
the XKE model, and the sponsors of each of those events are
interested in displaying as many of the early E-type Jaguars as
member clubs can assemble. JL
