LAKEFRONT LAWN / VIVA MAYR
AWESOME IN AUSTRIA
Viva Mayr, set on the shores of Lake Worthersee in Austria, is an exclusive detox
spa right in the middle of Sound of Music country. But, you’ll feel even more alive
than the hills after a week under the tender care of award-winning Dr. Harald
Stossier and his crew and partake in what they call “the cure.” Upon arrival,
guests meet with a physician and develop a plan for their stay. This includes daily
massages, exercise and a very regimented all-organic, all-local food plan. While
a strict no-paparazzi policy draws the rich and famous (they wouldn’t even divulge
any names to us, but our spies who have visited spotted everyone from shipping
magnates to European royalty), that privacy means guests tend to lounge about all
day in bathrobes—there is no need to dress, even for dinner. Select a Viva Suite
Lake View accommodation for your stay (about $850 a night). Plans at the spa start
at about $2,975 a week.
SKI CHIC
When Ritz-Carlton dipped its toe into the ski hotel market for the first
time at Bachelor Gulch, Colorado, winter sports fans were pleasantly
surprised. But the luxury brand has outdone itself with its second effort,
located mid-mountain on the slopes of the Northstar-at-Tahoe ski resort
in Lake Tahoe. A grand reincarnation of the beloved mountain lodge, The
Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe combines vast expanses of exposed reclaimed
Pacific Northwest timber and glass with cutting-edge technology and
modern amenities, and enjoys one of the best ski-in/ski-out locations
anywhere. A full-service ski concierge and rental shop has direct access
to multiple main lifts as well as to the resort’s Nordic center for crosscountry
skiing and snowshoeing. The hotel is connected to Northstar’s
new and impressive base village by both a direct passenger gondola that
runs into the night, and a very short drive in a fleet of chauffeured house
cars, combining privacy and isolation with turnkey convenience. The 170-
room (plus 23 private residences) hotel has a beautiful spa with a private
outdoor heated pool and one of the brand’s best restaurants, Manzanita,
run by San Francisco celebrity chef Traci des Jardins of Jardinière and
Iron Chef fame. Positioned above even the namesake Ritz-Carlton Suite
is the Sugar Pine Suite, with three bedrooms, full gourmet kitchen,
dining room and jetted tubs in both master bedrooms, spanning 2,303
square feet ($7,500 a night).
GLITTERATI ON THE GO
BY KELLY CARTER
QUEEN FOR A STAY Actress Diane Kruger, who stars as Marie Antoinette
in the period drama Farewell, My Queen that opened this year’s Berlinale
film festival, received the royal treatment during her recent visit to the
newly opened St. Regis Bal Harbour. A personal butler tended to Kruger in
her luxurious one-bedroom suite that afforded her a 180-degree panoramic
view, oversized terrace and semi-private elevator access. She ventured
over to the Remède Spa, a 12,000-square-foot oasis of calm and serenity,
for a deep-tissue massage, some downtime in the oxygen chamber lounge
and a glass of champagne, Jacques Torres truffles and Kashwére throws.
She calls the hotel “absolutely stunning. I haven’t been to Miami in so long
and this is totally worth it…. It’s just beautiful—classy and chic. You know
it’s the St. Regis!”
BON APPÉTIT When Glee star Matthew Morrison wants a taste of the
south of France, he doesn’t have to board a jet. He merely drives to the
chic Bagatelle LA, the newest hot spot in West Hollywood. Morrison has
quickly become a regular at the posh eatery that oozes French flavor and
style. He’s been in nearly weekly for everything from romantic dates with
girlfriend Renee Puente to dinners with his pals, who have included ‘N
Sync’s JC Chasez, director/producer Bryan Singer and former Hills star
Brody Jenner. Morrison is particularly fond of the red wine-poached pear
salad made with lemon-scented goat cheese, toasted pistachios, mache
and black truffle vinaigrette; tarte tatin with spiced caramel ice cream; banana
cheesecake in a jar; and the Louisiane cocktail, made with oldoverolt
rye whiskey, Benedictine, sweet vermouth and an absinthe rinse.
A HOMEY FEEL Ed Burns, honored at the Tribeca Film Festival in April,
recently checked into The James Chicago and took over one of the renowned
Loft rooms for a few nights. The actor/director made himself at
home in the residential-style room with a socially accommodating living
area, spacious slate-tiled bathroom, work/dining niche, fully stocked snack
and cocktail bar and, most importantly, a media room. The media “nook”
provided Burns with a full-size projection screen and full media hookups—
perfect for Burns to view his films and check out his pending work. From
his dark wood platform bed, Burns only had to look up to see the alarm
clock that projects onto the ceiling, the better to ensure he was at all of his
meetings on time.
