WHAT OUR READERS
SAY
Farmers And Bulk
Handling
(To the Editor.)
Sir,-The response to the request
to become members of South Aus
tralian Bulk Handling Company is
gratifying. At least 95 per cent,
of the farmers whom I have ap
proached are eager to assist in
bringing into being a growers' own
co-operative bulk handling scheme
for South Australia, and willingly
join up.
But it is disturbing to realise how
few have done so of tHeir own ac
cord. Growers must realise the
importance of this opportunity our
Government has given us to re
cord (by signing the membership
form) our wishes to own, finance,
and control our own bulk handling
scheme. Not only the opportunity
but also the scheme can easily slip
through our fingers and be lost
for all time should the growers fail
to sign the form.
So much has been done for so
many by
so few that it will be a
tragedy should farmers neglect
their responsibilities, for
"There is a tide in the affairs
of men which, taken at the flood,
to help us providing we show our
willingness to help ourselves. I
urge all branches to arrange to
canvass their districts as we are
doing in the Kadina area, each
member volunteering to do his
particular Council ward.
PARTY
CHILDREN
Gladstone
Festivities
Gladstone Institute Hall was
transformed by the decorative ef
fect of many colored balloons and
a large Christmas tree, and the
happy faces of the sons and daugh
ters of returned servicemen pro
vided the reward of Mrs. Colin
Budge, president of R.S.L. Women's
Auxiliary, Gladstone sub-branch,
and her committee members, who
had worked untiringly to provide
the children with one of the most
successful Christmas parties ever
held by the sub-branch.
After a programme of games and
items rendered by John Roneberg
(piano solo), Barbara Hancock
(solo dance) and a recitation by
little
Terry and Jeffry Roneberg,
Father Christmas entered the hall
on a gaily decorated trailer pulled
by two red-faced but hefty mem
bers of the sub-branch and escorted
by popular president Mr. H. R.
(Hock) Price.
Ice cream was dispensed by Mr.
Noel Coates, secretary, ably as
sisted by Committeeman Colin
Btidge. The evening was then
rounded off by a nicely prepared
supper for the children supplied by
Women's Auxiliary members.
LAND
COMPLAINT
OWNER'S
Council Galls For
Report
In a letter to the City Council
this week Mrs. D. Langstaff com
plained that the council* had not
undertaken road work in Duke
street, which had resulted in
stormwater entering her property.
Mr. C. L. Davis, M.P. (mayor)
said he doubted whether the house
concerned conformed with provi
sions of the Building Act. If the
roadway were built up, it would
dam water nearby.
Aid. L. H. Davis, who had a mo
tion carried that the engineer
should give immediate attention to
Duke street, said that the work
would not remedy difficulties ex
perienced by Mrs. Langstaff. She
would have to raise the level of
he: property to at least that of
York road.
Stating that he did not deem
that Mrs. Langstaff should shirk
her responsibilities, Aid. Davis
added a proviso that the health
inspector should examine all resi
dences on Mrs. Langstaff's land
with a view to furnishing
a
report
regarding hygiene and conformity
with the Building Act.
CONSERVED
FODDER
ALL THE YEAR ROUND!
Agricultural advisers, during the recent dry
. . . con
spell, warned that "farmers who do not store
fodder must expect stock losses".
Stored feed made into round bales by the
Roto-Baler keeps all its
goodness
serves the feed quality
of the leafy hay by
saving
more of the nutritious leaves from
windrow to. the finished bale.
The hay is handled gently
in a continuous
flow, wrapping the leaves inside, pro
tected from the rain. The outer curved
surface gives each bale thatched roof
protection to shed water.
Rolled bales store compactly; will hot
buckle; can be fed whole or unrolled
like a carpet. Wrapped with ordinary
inexpensive binder twine, your twine
costs are cut almost in halves.
Be Vise! Store plenty of rolled
bales, and you'll never be caught
short on feed.
