Dance at NJPAC Dazzles 

with Beauty and Boldness

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is 

NJPAC’s principal resident dance company, 

which is enough by itself to set off a beacon 

to summon dance lovers to Newark. The 

company’s engagement last season grew 

even more luminous with full houses and a 

performance of Revelations that featured a 

cast of 50 in the glorious final segment. 

Judith Jamison, the Ailey company’s Artistic 

Director Emerita and an NJPAC trustee, 

spent her 70 th birthday here with thousands 

of well-wishers—a cause for celebration, 

which is also how NJPAC defines its dance 

viewpoint. The joy of watching the perfect 

chemistry of movement and music attracts 

an enthusiastic dance audience, whether 

modern, classical, folk or tap are featured 

in the lineup. 

Thanks to a committed dance presence in 

NJPAC’s programming, you can savor them 

all this season. 

In December, NJPAC offers not one but two 

holiday celebrations. The Apollo Theater’s 

Ellington at Christmas on December 8 

combines a concert by the 16-piece David 

Berger Jazz Orchestra, choir and soloists 

of Duke Ellington’s and Billy Strayhorn’s 

Nutcracker Suite—a jazz interpretation of 

Tchaikovsky’s score—and excerpts from 

Ellington’s Sacred Music. The great Newark 

tapper Savion Glover and dancers from the 

Dance Theatre of Harlem School provide 

the accompanying exhilarating dance. The 

dynamic contemporary African and African- 

American dance troupe Forces of Nature 

follows on December 14 with a Kwanzaa 

observance that showcases drummers and 

dancers who are gifted in modern and 

West African dance, ballet, hip-hop and 

martial arts. 

“We explore and tell the legends, history 

and social history of the African-American 

experience in dance,” says company Artistic 

Director and Founder Abdel R. Salaam. “We 

want to empower young people, families 

and communities.” 

Inspired by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther 

King, Jr., Arthur Mitchell co-founded Dance 

Theatre of Harlem in 1969 to give African 

Americans an opportunity to perform ballet. 

It is fitting, therefore, that the acclaimed 

troupe will perform on January 17 in honor 

of King’s birthday. 

“His tragic assassination propelled Mr. 

Mitchell to do everything he could as a ballet 

dancer for African Americans,” says Virginia 

Johnson, the company’s Artistic Director. 

“We focus on the same thing today—what 

we can do as dancers for the African- 

American community through our school 

and company. There’s new energy in the 

organization as we show ballet’s relevance to 

the African-American experience.” 


On the bill are George Balanchine’s 

emotional Agon; Gloria, a tribute to the 

Harlem Renaissance by the company’s 

resident choreographer, Robert Garland, 

and a premiere by the inventive Thaddeus 

David and Tanya Wideman. 

New Jersey’s Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company 

is the perfect troupe for welcoming the 

Chinese New Year—the Year of the Horse— 

on January 25. 

“We always involve the audience in our 

celebrations,” says Artistic Director Nai-Ni 

Chen. “We make them as colorful and 

exciting as possible, telling traditional tales 

and using traditional instruments. But we 

also try to make our performances relevant 

to today’s Chinese-American experience, 

and so also include modern, abstract works. 

Still, of course, with beautiful costumes and 

fantastic props.” 

The choreographer doesn’t confine the 

festivities to the stage; she also has arranged 

to showcase the art of Chinese Americans 

with a lobby exhibit that audiences can view 

as they enter the Victoria Theater. Plus there 

will be a banquet to enjoy after the show. 

“How could we celebrate the Chinese New 

Year without food?” she asks. “We must 

also take care of the stomach.”

For the third year at NJPAC, dance in the 

Garden State is the heartbeat of Jersey 

Moves! Festival of Dance on March 8. The 

festival leads off with the Carolyn Dorfman 

Dance Company, celebrating more than 

30 years of creative modern dance, and 

10 Hairy Legs, the new company under 

the artistic direction of Randy James. A 

second installment of Jersey Moves!, with 

performances by four promising young

The legendary Kenny Rogers, the newest 

member of the Country Music Hall 

of Fame, performs holiday favorites 

and his classic hits across the U.S. and 

Canada during his 32 nd Christmas tour. 

Widely known for spreading holiday 

cheer with his festive Christmas & Hits 

shows, Rogers will be joined this year 

by Grammy Award-winner Linda Davis 

on a 24-date run that begins November 

27th in Montreal, Quebec and wraps 

December 22 nd in Champaign, Illinois. 

Rogers, who was inducted into the 

Country Music Hall of Fame during a 

Medallion Ceremony in Nashville on 

October 27th, has enjoyed a 55-year 

career as a Grammy ® Award-winning 

recording artist, distinctive vocalist and

of the last seven decades and scored a

About the Program 

For a twist on a seasonal classic and true 

holiday joy, New Jersey Performing Arts 

Center presents Ellington at Christmas. 

This special two-part program 

includes Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite 

and a recreation of his Sacred Music 

Concerts, which are both under the 

musical direction of David Berger. The 

Nutcracker Suite, first recorded in 1960, 

is a lively jazz interpretation by Ellington 

and his genius arranger Billy Strayhorn 

of Tchaikovsky’s beloved score that 

infuses swinging brass, colorful solos 

and jumpin’ jazz melodies. Students from 

the Dance Theater of Harlem School 

will perform choreography by Robert 

Garland to several selections. 

Ellington’s Sacred Music Concerts 

premiered in 1965 with A Concert of 

Sacred Music. Combining Christian 

liturgy with jazz, this concert was 

followed by two other concerts Second 

Sacred Concert (1968) and Third Sacred 

Concert (1973). Ellington often said 

his Sacred Music Concerts were “the 

most important thing I’ve done.” One 

critic, awarding the first album five 

stars, wrote, “The concert taps into 

Ellington’s roots in showbiz and African- 

American culture as well as his evidently 

deep religious faith, throwing it all 

together in the spirit of universality and 

sealing everything with the stamps of 

his musical signatures.” 

Rarely performed live in the New York 

area, this Apollo exclusive presentation, 

narrated by Keith David, features David 

Berger’s Jazz Orchestra, tap master 

Savion Glover, the soaring voices of 

Lizz Wright and Priscilla Baskerville.

an Apollo Theater legend and headliner 

during the 1930s and 1940s—the Apollo’s 

“Golden Jazz Years.” Performing at the 

Apollo until 1963, Ellington successfully 

established himself within the world of 

music as a brilliant composer who shows 

displayed highly-varied soloists and an 

unmatchable sound. 

The grandson of a slave, he grew to 

become one of the world’s most renowned 

jazz composers, an enigmatic personality 

and a showman of incomparable suavity, 

as comfortable in Carnegie Hall as in the 

nightclubs where he honed his style. He 

wrote some 1,500 compositions, many 

of which remain beloved standards, 

while concealing his inner-self behind a 

smiling public persona of charm, flowery 

language and ironic humor. 

Ellington often referred to his music as 

“American music” rather than jazz. His 

work defied genre typing, crossing over 

into blues, gospel, film scores, popular 

and classical. Others have described 

Ellington’s music as “beyond category” 

highlighting the true genius of this 

composer, bandleader, arranger and 

outstanding entertainer.

Meet the Artists 

David Berger is a jazz composer, arranger, 

conductor and teacher, recognized 

internationally as a leading authority 

on the music of Duke Ellington and the 

Swing Era. Conductor and arranger for 

the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra 

from its inception in 1988 through 1994, 

Berger has transcribed more than 750 

full scores of classic recordings including 

over 500 works by Duke Ellington 

and Billy Strayhorn. He has composed 

and arranged for Duke Ellington 

Orchestra, Quincy Jones and WDR Big 

Band, amongst many others and his 

jazz compositions, arrangements and 

transcriptions are played by hundreds of 

bands daily all over the world. 

Keith David is an award-winning actor, 

singer and voice actor with over 150 

film, television and stage credits to 

his name. A native of Harlem, David 

attended the High School of Performing 

Arts and The Juilliard School. His list 

of on-screen feature film roles include 

Oliver Stone’s Academy Award-winning 

Platoon, Clint Eastwood’s Bird and Paul 

Haggis’ Academy Award-winning Crash, 

as well as There’s Something About 

Mary, Armageddon, Pitch Black, The 

Chronicles of Riddick, Requiem for a 

Dream, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Barbershop 

and most recently Cloud Atlas. 

Savion Glover is a toe-tapping phenom, 

actor and choreographer. A native of 

Newark, New Jersey, the 10-year-old 

Glover landed his first part on Broadway 

in The Tap Dance Kid. He went on to 

perform with such legends as Gregory 

Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. He was 

later recognized with a Tony ® Award 

for Best Choreography for the musical 

Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk. 

Glover joined the cast of the children’s 

television show Sesame Street and 

has also appeared in Spike Lee’s film 

Bamboozled. He continues to tour his 

production of Classical Savion, where he 

taps to classical pieces played by a string 

chamber ensemble. 

Lizz Wright is a jazz and R&B singer 

and composer from Hahira, Georgia. 

Wright went on to study voice at Georgia 

State University in Atlanta. Her debut 

album, Salt, introduced Wright as both 

an accomplished songwriter and an 

effortlessly magnetic performer. Salt 

won international acclaim and was 

praised by The New York Times’ Stephen 

Holden. Dreaming Wide Awake and The 

Orchard followed, reaching the top of 

the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart. 

Wright’s newest recording, Fellowship, 

continues her genre-defying journey by 

nodding to her roots in gospel on the 

one hand and her gospel of eclecticism 

on the other. 

Priscilla Baskerville is a versatile dramatic 

soprano whose repertoire reaches from 

Wagner to Puccini. She has appeared in 

leading opera houses in North America 

and around the world including the 

Metropolitan Opera, where she has 

performed the title roles in Verdi’s 

Aida, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and 

Puccini’s La Bohème. Baskerville can 

be seen singing the hauntingly beautiful 

“Creole Love Call” of Duke Ellington 

in the film The Cotton Club. She can 

also be heard on the original cast 

recordings of Broadway’s Sophisticated 

Ladies, Davis’ The Life and Times of 

Malcolm X and The Cotton Club motion 

picture soundtrack. 

Dance Theatre of Harlem School is a ballet 

company and school of the allied arts 

founded in Harlem, New York in 1969 

by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook. The 

Dance Theatre of Harlem is renowned 

for being both the first black classical 

ballet company and the first major ballet 

company to prioritize black dancers. 

Robert Garland (Choreographer) was the 

Director and Resident Choreographer 

of the Dance Theatre of Harlem School. 

He has instructed for the Alvin Ailey 

American Dance Theater and the 

Kennedy Center – Dance Theatre of

Associate Costume Designer to Elizabeth 

Clancy on Sally Silvers’ Bonobo 

Milkshake after interning on Broadway’s 

A Christmas Story. Other credits include 

Associate Costume Designer to ESOSA 

on Ruined and Assistant to Martin 

Pakledinaz on Oklahoma! at Arena 

Stage. She most recently worked as the 

Associate Costume Designer for the 

2013 debut of Apollo Club Harlem at 

the Apollo Theater.

About the Program 

Now in its 20 th season, Holiday Express 

is a traveling Christmas party—a fromthe-heart 

troupe of musicians bringing 

music, friendship, help and hope to 

those too often left out in the cold at 

the most special time of the year. 

You may have seen them on TV at 

the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting, 

and now the acclaimed philanthropic 

group, Holiday Express, brings its 

“Ultimate Holiday Show” to New Jersey 

Performing Arts Center. 

Featuring 50 professional musicians and 

singers on stage, Holiday Express blends 

its unique mixture of traditional, gospel 

and rock ’n soul holiday music in a 

spectacular performance that will touch 

you with the spirit of the season. 

Playing far from the limelight, in 

sometimes desperate circumstances, and 

all for absolutely no pay, more than 90 

of the best musicians on the Jersey Shore 

play 60 shows from mid-November 

through Christmas Eve, and with several 

dozen support staff in tow, deliver not 

only music, but, clothing, food and 

fun to adults and children in need, 

the mentally and physically disabled, 

disadvantaged families, the isolated 

elderly, children with serious illness and 

the desperately homeless.

The Enchanted Oz 

Women’s Association of NJPAC conjures 

Emerald City in Brick City 

Like another magical realm, Brigadoon, 

The Enchanted Oz appeared for a brief 

time—on the evening of October 5 at 

NJPAC—but vanished at midnight, 

leaving a lingering promise of even better 

things to come. 

The wizards of the Women’s Association 

of NJPAC (WA) unveiled this themed 

setting for their 18 th annual Spotlight 

Gala 2013, attended by more than a 

thousand celebrants who raised $1.8 

million for the Arts Center and its arts 

education programs. Heightening the 

excitement was the announcement that 

NJPAC would be the home of a new 

Brick City Jazz Orchestra, an 18-piece 

big band composed of the most gifted 

high school jazz musicians in the Greater 

Newark area. 

Arriving guests were welcomed to a 

cocktail tent lavished with autumnal 

decorations and almost-too-prettyto-eat 

hors d’oeuvres. Various spaces 

were transformed into swank dining 

rooms, from second-tier shadowboxes 

overlooking the twinkling lights of 

outdoor Theater Square below, to the 

stage of the Victoria Theater and inside 

NICO Kitchen + Bar. 

Gala Chairwoman Mikki Taylor, 

Editor at Large for Essence magazine, 

welcomed revelers to the Magical Voices 

performance in Prudential Hall, where 

she was joined at the podium by John 

Schreiber, President and CEO of NJPAC. 

Additional remarks were delivered 

by Robert H. Doherty and Philip R. 

Sellinger, Dinner Co-Chairs of the Gala. 

Patrick C. Dunican, Jr., Chairman and Managing 

Director (pictured with his wife Christina) and 

Gibbons P.C. were honored for their corporate 

commitment to the arts. 

Musical moments reminiscent of Oz were 

sprinkled throughout the show, beginning 

with an energetic opening by NJPAC’s 

arts education students, who performed a 

mashup about magic and “Ease on Down 

the Road” from the musical The Wiz. 

“Home,” another selection from The 

Wiz, was sung by Ledisi as the closing 

number. In between were turns by The 

Four Freshmen, the a cappella marvels 


Naturally 7 and INDIA, the Princess of 

Salsa. Since a tour of the Emerald City 

wouldn’t be complete without Harold 

Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow,” Broadway 

star Ann Hampton Callaway swept 

listeners away with her interpretation. 

The evening’s honorees, introduced by 

WA President Christine C. Gilfillan in 

a videotaped tribute, included Patrick 

C. Dunican, Jr., Esq. and Gibbons 

P.C. (Vagelos Award for Corporate 

Commitment to the Arts); Cephas Bowles, 

President and CEO of WBGO Jazz88.3 

FM (Ryan Award for Commitment to 

NJPAC and Leadership in the City of 

Newark) and Veronica M. Goldberg 

(Chambers Award for Service to the 

Community and to the Arts). 

During the performance, NJPAC’s lobby 

had been swiftly transfigured into a 

nightclub with swirling fabric “cyclones” 

suspended upward of three stories and 

lit with rainbows of color. Projections 

skittered about the floor, including 

a giant uncoiling yellow brick road, 

where guests danced to the music of 

DJ Kiss—when they weren’t sampling 

the luscious goodies at the Wicked 

Dessert Extravaganza. 

Spotlight Gala 2013’s lead sponsor was 

Prudential Financial; the Underwriter 

was The MCJ Amelior Foundation. Vice 

Chairs included Bank of America, Toby 

and Leon G. Cooperman, Gibbons P.C., 

Public Service Enterprise Group and 

PwC. Special thanks go to the Board of
