Dr. Jack Shock, associate professor of communication, warms
up before the private strings class which was held at 8 a.m. every
Tuesday during the fall semester. Shock enrolled in the class to further
his interest in music.
~ H e is a very willing and diligent student, ~ Dr. Patricia Cox, associate
professor of music, said. "He practices regularly and comes to class
regularty. He's still working on his hand positions but he seems very eager.n
Shock said he aspires to play in the Harding Orchestra one day.
However, Shock also mentioned that he has other instruments in mind.
"My goal is to do the stand-up bass, because, it is really a beautiful
instrument," Shock said. Shock thought the violin would be a good
starting instrument, since he had no prior training with stringed instruments.
Shock dreams of having his own personal band.
"I want to form a combo and have a piano player, a jazz singer and
me. It would be Jack S hoc ~ Un p lugged ," he said.
During high school, Shock played the trumpet and French horn . He
has also played the piano from age five.
Shock believes the class was good for him, and it lifted his spirits.
"I leave that class humming. It is very therapeutic. It really helps to
get my day s ta rte d ,~ he said. (Photo by Russ Phillips)
