I .. ,PRESIDENT -<strong>Harding</strong>'s ambassador spans the globe in 1968DR. CLIFTON L. GANUS, JR., in his third yearas President of his alma mater, spent a significantamount of time traveling on native soil and abroad.During November, 1967, Dr. Ganus made a tripto the Far East, participating in the lectureship atlbaraki Christian College, Ibaraki, Japan. As amember of the Development Board of the Japanesecollege, Dr. Ganus was summoned to a specialmeeting for preparing its status as a senior college.It was of necessity that the move be made in 1967to comply with Japanese law. Circling variouscities of the United States and visiting Hawaii inthe summer, completed his annual itinerary.Three new buildings have been completed thusfar during President Ganus's administration -the new science building and two air-conditioneddormitories. Also, the enrollment of Harcling hasincreased Ii fly per cen t.Dr. Ganus is in constant demand as a speakerfor various civle and ('nllcational groups.BASKETBALL affords recreation and exercise for Dr. Ganus.SPANNING the globe from the Orient to New York as <strong>Harding</strong> 'sAmbassador, President Ganus often uses the college plane.18


DEAN OF THE COLLEGEDean Pryor ably guides <strong>Harding</strong>'s academic lifeDR. JOSEPH E. PRYOR continued throughou tthe year to keep <strong>Harding</strong>'s curriculum abreast withthe new developments and knowledge. No curriculumrem ains static and Dr. Pryor, as the m oderneducator, adjusts academic life in accordance.During 1967-68 he served as Coordina tor in theNo rth Central Association Liberal Arts Study Program,visiting eight colleges in Minnesota andlllinois. This was in addition to his duties asSecreary-Treasurer of Region II of Alpha Chi andas Pres ident of the Arkansas Intercollegiate AthleticConference. Last year was Dean Pryor 'stwenty-second year as advisor to the Petit Jean.ORGANIZING and conducting the counsel ing sessions which init .iate registration are only two of Dean Pryor' s many duties.20


DEAN OF STUDENTSDeans solve problems from gambling to hemlinesVIRGIL H. LAWYER fills the dual role of Deanof Students and Director of Admissions. However.this year in addition to these responsibilities, heserved as acting Dean of "Vomen and coach of thecross-country team. Guiding the cross-countryteam to an AIC victory, Lawyer traveled with theboys to Omaha, Nebraska; Springfield, MissoUl~;Bowling Green, Kentucky and Oklahoma City.Oklahoma. Acting as Dean of Women has posedseveral problems such as enforcing curfew andespecially suggesting lower hemlines. This yearfound Lawyer wearing a more harried look on hisface as he keeps up with 1900 students. Nonethe·less, Lawyer, assisted by Eddie Campbell, still con·tinues to direct the recmitment of future students.CARL LEE ALLISON vitally aided the formationof TTarding's first dormitory council. Throughoutthe year Dean Allison gained the respect of thestudellt body by the understanding way he di s­('harged his duties as Dean of Men.Dean Allison is a member of the ArkansasCoaches Association, the NATA Baseball CoachesAssociation and the Arkansas Officials Association.Mr. Al1ison is assistant athletic director. basebal1coach and advisor on veteran's affairs. BUSINESS MANAGERBusiness Manager aids investigation of burglaryLOTT R. TUCKER, JR., aided the police in aninvestigation of the $371.00 robbery of the businessoffice on November sixth. The thieves broke openthe safe in expectation of the week-end footballgame receipts. However, this additional $1,000 wasnot there, since the receipts were not turned in untilthe following morning.As Business Manager, Mr. Tucker is responsiblefor all <strong>Harding</strong> business operations, managing abudget of approximately $5,000,000 for 1967-68.He is responsible for budgeting, purchasing, accounting,construction, maintenance of buildingsand grounds. investment of endowment funds, andmanagement of non-academic personnel. Mr.Tucker is a Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis Internationaland he is a board member of the SearcyChamber of Comm erce and the Searcy FederalSavings and Loan Association.REGISTRARLOTT TUCKER , BABeckett's study expedites registration problemsVIRGIL M. BECKETT has been able to ex pedite<strong>Harding</strong>'s registration problems greatly througha study of methods and procedures. With an enlargedenrollment, such a study has increased efficiency.The growth of the registrar's duties necessitatedthe addition of William T. Wallace as Assistantto the Registrar during the 1967 summersession.Registrar Beckett also h as been able to increasehis services as Registrar through additional usesof the IBM equipment that was installed a yearago.Mr. Beckett is a recent past president of theArkansas Association of Collegiate Registrars andAdmissions Officers. PRESIDENTIAL ASSIST ANTCOX assumes new post as Presidential AssistantBILLY RAY COX was appointed assistant to thePresident in the areas of development and publicrelations at the beginning of the 1967 fall semester.Known by students as the voice who broadcastedBison football games play by play in his ownunique style, Cox also finds time to serve as Directorof Placement and Director of the AmericanStudies Program. In the fall he accompaniedAmerican Studies students on a field trip to surveyDallas enterprises. Mr. Cox is in his fourth yearsponsoring the <strong>Harding</strong> business team in the MichiganState Executive Games. The competition provesa challenge to the team and Mr. Cox as <strong>Harding</strong> isthe smallest school entered in the competition.BillY RAY COX , MBA , CPA , TOADIRECTOR OF RESEARCHNASA grants $46,000 for research in '67 '68HARRY OlREE, EdDDR. HARRY DOYLE OLREE, Director of Research,is the recipient of a $46,000 research grantfrom the National Aeronautics and Space Administrationfor 1967-68 to conduct basic research onthe evaluation of physical fitness. This research isin connection with the space program's training ofthe astronauts. Dr. Olree is the editor of the AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine Newsletter andpresident of the Research <strong>Section</strong> of the ArkansasAssociation for H ealth, Physical Education, andRecreation. He was elected to an honor m embershipsociety last May. In addition to these positions, heserves <strong>Harding</strong> as Chairman of the Departmentof Health and Physical Educa tion, Chairman of theDivision of Education and Athletic Director.23
