by Quaritch in 1881, as evidenced in a letter 

from that firm which is loosely inserted with 

the map. Title-page of the first volume 

slightly grubby but the text generally bright. 

Contemporary half calf bindings, rubbed and 

worn, the backstrips of the spines lifting. 

* This is the second edition (second issue) 

of a book first printed in 1589, with the 

bookplates of “John Carrington The 

Grange, Shenley.” The “Cadiz leaves” 

(volume 1 pp 607-619) which are present 

in this copy were possibly suppressed 

by command of Queen Elizabeth 1st 

(although Payne [2008] has put forward 

the idea that “Hakluyt himself may 

have withdrawn them out of prudent 

considerations of patronage, an act of 

“self censorship” rather than compulsion 

by orders from above.”) Very few copies 

have these leaves present. The “missing” 

map may never have been issued with 

the book, Anthony Payne [Payne 2008] 

quoting Hind, “Engraving in England ... C. 

U. P. 1952” on page 101 “... the extreme 

rarity of copies of the book containing the 

map, renders it possible that the map was 

not completed till about 1599-1600, and 

that impressions were sold separately, and 

only occasionally inserted in the book.”

A collection of signed postcard size 

photographs including Diana Dors, Jean

Cagney. Together with some signed in 

facsimile and a few post cards. All mounted 

to the leaves of an unbound album preserved 

in an old ring binder.

Jersey, Guernsey and elsewhere. Together 

with newspaper cuttings and other ephemera. 

The half roan album very rubbed with a 

presentation inscription dated 1877.

477. A Log of H. M. S. Gorgon. An original 

ship’s log for HMS Gorgon compiled during 

the year 1858. A folio journal in contemporary 

half calf binding with marbled paper covered 

boards, the binding rubbed and worn and with 

some loss (of the marbled paper) to the upper 

board. A worn morocco label, Partly detached, 

on the upper cover stamped in gilt “Complete 

Book – H. M. S. Gorgon.” 

* H.M.S. Gorgon was a wooden paddle 

steam frigate of six guns. Launched in 

August 1837, she first saw action in the 

bombardment of the City of Acre. In 1843, 

she joined the Royal Navy squadron in the 

River Plate during the Uruguayan Civil War 

and in the year 1858 set off on a more 

peaceful mission to assist in the laying 

of the first transatlantic telegraph cable, 

taking soundings for the former war ship 

H.M.S. Agamemnon. 

The log is a simple record of daily events 

during the voyage one leaf has 8 small 

sepia washes of cloud formations and 

loosely inserted is a folded A2 pen and 

ink manuscript map of the voyage. On the 

verso of the first leaf are the manuscript 

signatures of some of the crew members, 

amongst these are included those of the 

Master, Christopher Albert, the Paymaster, 

Albert P. M. Roberts, the Chief Engineer, 

Robert E. Home and John B. Butler, the 

Lieutenant. All of whom received an 

Atlantic Cable Medal for their parts in the 

proceedings.

A collection of 22 A2 size drawings in 

watercolour over pen and ink and pencil, some 

with further annotations. The drawings are for 

the most part in good condition but with some 

staining and fraying to their edges. The church 

(with the exception of the chancel) was heavily 

restored in 1878, these drawings were made 

for Charles Penruddocke. They are by James 

Soppitt, architect and road surveyor, whose 

address was Tout Hill, Shaftesbury, from where 

he operated between the years 1868-1886.
