<strong>ABOUT</strong> <strong>THE</strong> <strong>AUTHORS</strong><br />

LONNIE R. ARMSTRONG Jr. is originally from Fresno, CA. He served in the Armed Forces Department of<br />

the Navy for seven years. He earned his B.A. in American Studies from Franklin Pierce College in 2006 and his<br />

M. Ed. in Educational Studies from <strong>Rivier</strong> College in 2007. He is currently in the CAGS program in school<br />

psychology at <strong>Rivier</strong> College. He resides in Nashua, NH.<br />

SUSAN E. BARBARO, Ph.D., obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from Concordia <strong>University</strong>, Montreal,<br />

Quebec, and Master of Science and Doctorate from the <strong>University</strong> of Waterloo, Ontario. Her desire to understand<br />

and protect the environment has always played an important role in determining Susan’s research interests. In<br />

particular, she is interested in the microbial ecology of fresh water and soil ecosystems. Susan has studied and<br />

conducted research related to microbial physiology, biological control, and bioremediation. Her first full-time<br />

teaching position was at Delaware State <strong>University</strong>, a Historical Black College. She joined the faculty at <strong>Rivier</strong><br />

College in 2003. Dr. Barbaro is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Department of Biology.<br />

KATHI VIESER BIANCO is a freelance writer from Long Island, New York, specializing in higher education<br />

and consumer marketing. The winner of multiple awards for both nonfiction and fiction writing, she holds a<br />

bachelor's degree from Northwestern <strong>University</strong> and master's degrees from New York Institute of Technology and<br />

the City <strong>University</strong> of New York-Queens College.<br />

MARK W. BOEGEL earned his M. Ed. from <strong>Rivier</strong> College in 1989. Since then he has worked as a school<br />

counselor, a technical recruiter and the director of career services at the local campus of a nationwide technical<br />

college. He has also worked in other unrelated fields. As a Clinical Case Manager for the Mental health Center of<br />

Greater Manchester, Mark currently works with people with severe and persistent mental illnesses. He resides in<br />

Nashua with his wife Linda and Martin, the youngest of his three sons. His two older sons and two grandchildren<br />

live on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.<br />

LUCIE BRYAR earned a B.A. in English Communications from <strong>Rivier</strong> College in 1976. She has more than 20<br />

years experience in news-writing, marketing, and public relations, including 14 years as a staff writer for <strong>Rivier</strong><br />

College. In her current position as a writer for Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, Bryar produces the<br />

employee newsletter. She also writes for the hospital magazine, as well as contributes to the production of<br />

collateral marketing material.<br />

Professor LLOYD J. CARR, Ph.D., has been a member of <strong>Rivier</strong>’s Philosophy Department since 1985, having<br />

previously taught at Baruch College (CUNY) and Long Island <strong>University</strong> (Brooklyn). His philosophical interests<br />

include normative critical and practical reasoning, theories of rational choice, and philosophy of mind. His article<br />

“Deliberation versus outcome: a procedural problem for committees” draws from his recent courses in political<br />

philosophy and decision making, as well as from his study of articles in professional journals.<br />

Sr. <strong>THE</strong>RESA COUTURE is an artist in digital and combined media. She received her M.F.A. from Rhode<br />

Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island; D.Min. in Theology and the Arts from Graduate Theological<br />

Foundation, South Bend, Indiana (partially coordinated with studies at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley,<br />

California and the Andover Newton Theological School, Newton, MA); and M.A. and B.A. in English from<br />

<strong>Rivier</strong> College. Theresa Couture combines an active studio life with a full professorship in art at <strong>Rivier</strong> College, a<br />

Catholic liberal arts institution sponsored by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary of which she is a member.<br />

She has served as Co-chair of the Department of Art and Music and Director of the Design Program. She is<br />

currently Director of the <strong>Rivier</strong> College Art Gallery. Her work on paper has been exhibited throughout the United<br />

States. Many of her pieces are in private and university collections as well as in the collections of the Armand<br />

Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, California, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.<br />

Her work has appeared in Art New England, Christianity and the Arts, Insight, Face of the Deep, and publications<br />

of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA).<br />

ROBERT CRAVEN, Ph.D., Professor of English and Humanities, is an interdisciplinary scholar who teaches<br />

Humanities and Art History. Bob is a recipient of the Southern New Hampshire <strong>University</strong> award for excellence<br />

in teaching. He has published five books, including a two-volume encyclopedia of symphony orchestras around<br />

the world. He has also written more than 80 reviews for the magazine Art New England, of which he was for<br />

many years the New Hampshire review editor. He instituted and formerly directed SNHU's McIninch Art<br />

Gallery. As he approaches retirement, his interest in photography has turned away from technical work towards<br />

images of birds, emphasizing their colors and personalities.<br />

TIMOTHY J. DOHERTY, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Department of English and<br />

Communications at <strong>Rivier</strong> College, where he also directs the campus writing program and chairs the Faculty<br />

Development Committee. He received his Ph.D. in English from the <strong>University</strong> of Massachusetts at Amherst in<br />

1996, and is currently interested in the intersection of conflict resolution, deliberative democracy, and core<br />

education in colleges and universities.<br />

ERIC DROUART, a native of France, after graduating from Institut de Préparation à l’Administration et à la<br />

Gestion (IPAG) in Paris, France, attended the <strong>University</strong> of Massachusetts (Amherst), and received a Bachelor’s<br />

in Business Administration and a Master’s of Science in Business Administration. Drouart joined <strong>Rivier</strong> College<br />

in early 2000. He is an Associate Professor in the Business Administration Division teaching courses in<br />

management, marketing, advertising, international business, and strategic management. Drouart had extensive<br />

international marketing and general management experience with Bristol-Myers Squibb. He was based in Paris,<br />

France from 1994 to 1999. Eric also spent five years, from 1986 to 1991, in Japan, and one year (1993) in Italy.<br />

Drouart had prior international research experience with General Foods Corporation and Burke Marketing<br />

Research. Drouart is a member of the American Marketing Association.<br />

PETER ELIOPOULOS received his Bachelor of Arts degree, in Political Science and Philosophy, from Boston<br />

College. He is currently enrolled in the Writing and Literature M. A. Program at <strong>Rivier</strong> College. His works have<br />

been published in Remodeling News, Typically Unusual, and The Lowell Sun newspaper. His writing has also<br />

been featured on Jay Leno's Tonight Show. He lives in Lowell, Mass., with his daughters Julia and Mia.<br />

LISA ENRIGHT is the Director of Academic Advising at <strong>Rivier</strong> College. She received her M.A. in<br />

Communication degree from the State <strong>University</strong> of New York at Albany in 1994 and B.A. in Political Science<br />

degree from Utica College of Syracuse <strong>University</strong>, in 1993. Lisa joined <strong>Rivier</strong> College in May 2002 as the<br />

Evening Academic Advisor before being promoted to Director of Advising in July 2004. Lisa now oversees both<br />

day and evening nursing advising offices and also continues to serve as the academic advisor for all B.S. evening<br />

nursing students. Before coming to <strong>Rivier</strong>, Lisa served as an adjunct humanities faculty member and academic<br />

advisor at New Hampshire Community Technical College (NHCTC) at Nashua. Prior to working at NHCTC, Lisa<br />

was the Elderhostel Summer Program Coordinator and Marketing Assistant for the <strong>University</strong> of New England’s<br />

(UNE) Office of Continuing Education, Biddeford, ME. Before going to UNE, Lisa worked as a Staff Assistant<br />

for the Office of the Provost, State <strong>University</strong> of New York System Administration. Lisa is a member of the<br />

National Association of Academic Advisors (NACADA).<br />

Dr. H. ALAN GOODMAN is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Director of the Graduate Program in<br />

Clinical Psychology at <strong>Rivier</strong> College. He has a Bachelor's degree from California State <strong>University</strong>, a Master's<br />

Degree from the <strong>University</strong> of the Incarnate Word, and a Ph.D. from St Mary's <strong>University</strong>, and he is all but<br />

dissertation in a second Ph.D. in General/Experimental Psychology from Tufts <strong>University</strong>.<br />

GEORGI LAURIN HIPPAUF holds a B.A. from Boston <strong>University</strong> and an M.A. in Education from SUNY at<br />

Albany, NY. She edited and co-authored three books with former Governor Hugh Gregg on New Hampshire<br />

Primary politics. She led the founding of Le Parc de Notre Renaissance Française in Nashua, about which she<br />

wrote the descriptive book The Third Century: A Recognition of Franco-Americans to raise funds for the park’s<br />

bronze sculpture. Her latest book, The Story of How They Banished Pickled Frogs’ Legs Forever, was illustrated<br />

by RISE colleague Diane Statkum. Georgi co-hosted Talkline with Maury Parent for three years on Nashua’s<br />

local radio stations. She has facilitated courses at RISE, including French a la Mode, and serves on its Executive<br />

Board as RISE publicity director.<br />

JENNIFER LISKOW is <strong>Rivier</strong>’s Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications and teaches in the<br />

College’s Professional Communications program. Jennifer earned her bachelor’s in English and communications<br />

from Notre Dame College in Manchester, N.H. in 1996. In 2002, she completed her master’s in writing and<br />

literature at <strong>Rivier</strong>. She began writing in junior high school; since then, she has had poems, short stories, features<br />

and essays published. She serves on the Board of Directors for NH Roller Derby, the state’s first competitive flattrack<br />

roller derby league.<br />

Professor MARIA MATARAZZO is Chair of the Division of Business Administration at <strong>Rivier</strong> College and<br />

has served as a faculty member for the past 20 years. Matarazzo has a comprehensive background in business<br />

management, business communications, and business software applications. Matarazzo has previously held fulltime<br />

faculty positions at Southern New Hampshire <strong>University</strong> and Manchester Community College. Professor<br />

Matarazzo has served on the Board of many professional organizations. She is past president of the New<br />

Hampshire Business Education Association and has held memberships in the National Business Education<br />

Association, the Eastern Business Education Association, the Academy of Management, the Association of<br />

Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, the National Campaign for Tolerance, and local organizations such as<br />

the Nashua Chamber of Commerce. She serves as a marketing advisor for Business Week. Matarazzo has been<br />

named several times to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, as well as being inducted into several honor<br />

societies—Pi Omega Pi, Alpha Sigma Lambda, and Alpha Delta Kappa. She has been honored with the State of<br />

NH Excellence in Education Award, 2005. Additionally, Matarazzo has been honored with the State of NH/BPW<br />

“Excellence in Advocacy” Award, and the 2003-2004 "Megaphone Award" for her advocacy of legislative issues<br />

that impact working women, families, and minorities. Matarazzo has presented to the International Management<br />

Council, the New England Council of Lions, and the National Regional Conference of the Association of<br />

Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, the New Hampshire Business Education Association, and other<br />

professional organizations. She has recently published a paper “Shifting Hemispheres: Age, Altruism, and New<br />

Markets” that will be presented at the 9 th International Conference on Knowledge, Change, and Culture in<br />

Organizations. Professor Matarazzo resides in Nashua, New Hampshire.<br />

ROBERT T. McLAUGHLIN, Ph.D., chaired <strong>Rivier</strong> College’s education division in 2008. He oversees<br />

professional educator preparation program approval for the NH Dept. of Education. His three children, he enjoys<br />

telling them, are usually cute and adorable; with his wife he provides a home for four border collies, who all are<br />

cute and adorable. He founded and chaired the International Society for Technology in Education’s interest<br />

groups on innovative learning technologies and digital equity, serves on the national commission on technology<br />

and the future of teacher education, and is senior fellow for the Stokes Institute for Opportunity in STEM<br />

Education.<br />

KATHY MORRISSEY is the Administrative Assistant for Academic Advising and has been with <strong>Rivier</strong> College<br />

for two years, serving one year in the Division of Nursing as an administrative assistant.<br />

JOANN B. NICHOLS is enjoying her first year as faculty in the <strong>Rivier</strong> College Education Division, having<br />

taught as adjunct faculty and in the <strong>Rivier</strong> Early Childhood Center Kindergarten for several years. She is eagerly<br />

anticipating the pending completion of her doctoral dissertation on the history of reading instruction.<br />

KATHLEEN PATENAUDE is the president of the <strong>Rivier</strong>-St. Joseph Nursing Honor Society. She is an<br />

Instructor of Nursing at <strong>Rivier</strong> College with over thirty years of nursing experience. Kathleen has also served the<br />

public in various roles with a background in critical care. She holds licensure as a registered nurse in New<br />

Hampshire and Massachusetts. Kathleen earned a bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in nursing<br />

education at <strong>Rivier</strong>. She has had the pleasure of contributing to the community's education of nursing program for<br />

the last ten years, six of which were spent at <strong>Rivier</strong>. Her devotion to <strong>Rivier</strong> College and the Sisters of the<br />

Presentation began in her high school years as a student at Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson, New<br />

Hampshire. Most recently, Kathleen was appointed to be the certified nurse educator (CNE) for the National<br />

League of Nursing (NLN).<br />

Dr. VLADIMIR V. RIABOV, Professor of Computer Science at <strong>Rivier</strong> College, teaches Introduction to<br />

Computing, Networking Technologies, Computer Security, Software Engineering, Object-Oriented System<br />

Design, System Simulation and Modeling, and Professional Seminar in Computer Science. He received a Ph.D. in<br />

Applied Mathematics and Physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and M.S. in Computer<br />

Information Systems from Southern New Hampshire <strong>University</strong>. Vladimir published about 100 articles in<br />

encyclopedias, handbooks, journals, and international and national conference proceedings, including The Internet<br />

Encyclopedia, The Handbook of Information Security, The Handbook of Computer Networks, International<br />

Journal of Computers and Structures, Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, Journal of Aircraft, Journal of<br />

Thermophysics and Heat Transfer, Proceedings of International Congress of Aeronautical Sciences, International<br />

Symposia on Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Shock Waves, International Conferences on Computer Science and<br />

Information Systems, Conferences of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and others. He is a<br />

member of ACM, AIAA, IEEE, and MAA. His hobby is digital photography. Vladimir’s photos have been<br />

published in The Bedford Bulletin and The Goffstown News. He has also participated in the SNHU Community<br />

Art Shows and New Hampshire Art Association Photo Exhibitions.<br />

Dr. VIRGINIA RYAN is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at <strong>Rivier</strong> College since 1999. She earned a<br />

Ph.D. from Boston College in 1998 (Dissertation: “Physician-Assisted Suicide from a Social Justice<br />

Perspective”), M.A. in Special Education from Assumption College (1989), M. Div. from Andover Newton<br />

Theological School (1977), and B.A. from Boston College (1974). Dr. Ryan teaches courses in Bioethics,<br />

Christian Ethics, Environmental Theology, Biblical Theology, and Feminist Theology & Spirituality. Before<br />

becoming a college professor, Virginia was a hospital chaplain, patient representative, and youth minister. She is<br />

a Board Member and Section Convener (Theology, Ecology and Natural Science) of the College Theological<br />

Society and is an active member in the Catholic Theological Society of America and the Society of Christian<br />

Ethics. She is on the Advisory Board and Ethics Committee of Notre Dame Health Care Center in Worcester,<br />

MA. Dr. Ryan has spoken to various groups on such topics as ecotheology, justice in the Church, spirituality and<br />

sexuality, and bioethics. She lives in Worcester, Massachusetts, married to Neil Castronovo. They have two<br />

daughters, Elizabeth, 23 and Annie, 18.<br />

MARGARET SHAW is currently in the M.A. in Writing and Literature Program at <strong>Rivier</strong>. She earned a B.S. in<br />

Elementary Education and Psychology from the <strong>University</strong> of Massachusetts-Boston. Peggy taught at the<br />

kindergarten for 15 years. Also she was an ESL tutor for immigrants for five years. Peggy lives with her husband,<br />

Thomas in Hudson, NH. They enjoy sailing the Prickly Heat in Wellfleet, MA and in the Lake Winnisquam, NH,<br />

cross country skiing at Windblown, and bike riding on the Niagara Water Front in Canada. They have no pets, but<br />

neighborhood cats do enjoy playing mortal combat with the field mice that inhabit Shaw’s fieldstone foundation.<br />

Dr. REGINA SHEARER is the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at <strong>Rivier</strong> College. She received<br />

her Bachelor and Master's of Science in Physics and Bachelor of Arts in French at Shippensburg State Teachers<br />

College. She received her Masters of Divinity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and an Honorary<br />

Doctoral Degree from <strong>Rivier</strong> College. Dr. Shearer is the Executive Pastor of Zion Church Ministries,<br />

headquartered in Everett, MA, and Dean of the Covenant Christian Bible Institute.<br />

LYNN LESSARD SPERL is a communications specialist for New Hampshire Local Government Center in<br />

Concord, New Hampshire, and is more than half-way through coursework for obtaining an M.A. in Writing and<br />

Literature at <strong>Rivier</strong> College. The former journalist has been a writer and editor for the healthcare industry for over<br />

25 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the <strong>University</strong> of New Hampshire and is an active member<br />

of the New England Society of Healthcare Communications. Lynn lives in Gilford, New Hampshire, with her<br />

entrepreneur husband, Kevin Sperl, who publishes the new Lakes Region Spirit magazine to which Lynn<br />

contributes her copyediting and column writing talents.<br />
