Tempe honors veterans<br />
with parade, memorial<br />
Families and community groups are<br />
welcome <strong>to</strong> attend the annual Veterans<br />
Day Parade in Tempe on Monday,<br />
Nov. 12, starting at 10 a.m. at ASU<br />
Gammage, on Mill Avenue south of<br />
University Drive.<br />
The parade proceeds north on Mill,<br />
ending with a short ceremony in<br />
Tempe Beach Park, located at Mill<br />
Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway. For<br />

After the ceremony at Tempe Beach<br />
Park, at noon, the City of Tempe will<br />
dedicate Phase One of its Veterans<br />
Memorial on the south bank of Tempe<br />
Town Lake, just east of Ash Avenue.<br />
The memorial is located at the his<strong>to</strong>ric<br />
abutment of the Ash Avenue Bridge.<br />
Phase One includes the Memorial<br />
Overlook, which is the res<strong>to</strong>ration of<br />
the his<strong>to</strong>ric Ash Avenue bridge<br />
abutment. The overlook provides a<br />
great vantage point of Tempe Town<br />
Lake and a ceremonial stage for<br />
events.<br />
Two more phases will be completed<br />
in future years.<br />
Tempe Tardeada celebrates Hispanic heritage<br />
All are invited <strong>to</strong> the 14th<br />
Annual Tempe Tardeada<br />
from noon <strong>to</strong> 8 p.m. on<br />
Sunday, Oct. 14, <strong>to</strong> celebrate<br />
Tempe’s Hispanic roots.<br />
<strong>This</strong> free festival will take place<br />
at the Tempe Community Center<br />
Complex, 3500 S. Rural Road, at<br />
the southwest corner of Rural<br />
Road and Southern Avenue.<br />
A tardeada is a vibrant afternoon<br />
festival and social dance featuring<br />
continuous entertainment,<br />
traditional Mexican foods, arts and<br />
crafts for children, community<br />
booths and a <strong>to</strong>rtilla-making<br />
demonstration. In conjunction<br />
with National Hispanic Heritage<br />
Month, the goal of the festival is <strong>to</strong><br />
celebrate and experience the legacy<br />
of Tempe’s Hispanic culture.<br />
Some of the many performers<br />
set <strong>to</strong> appear include Power Drive<br />
and Mariachi Corazon Latino.<br />
Colorfully dressed folklorico<br />
dancers, Folklor y Cultura<br />
Mexicana, and the Roping<br />
Reynosos Trick Ropers will add<br />

Tempe Zero Waste Day honors America Recycles Day<br />
Tempe residents are invited <strong>to</strong><br />
participate in Zero Waste Day on<br />
Saturday, Nov. 17, from 7 a.m.<br />
<strong>to</strong> 1 p.m. at the Tempe Fire Training<br />
Facility, 1340 E. University Drive<br />
(directly north of the Household<br />
Products Collection Center).<br />
Residents can bring just about<br />
anything for recycling, including:<br />
• books and school supplies<br />
• electronic equipment (phones,<br />
computers, TVs, DVDs, etc.)<br />
• scrap metal<br />
• household hazardous waste<br />
(cleaning supplies, lawn and pool<br />

Theme of this year’s event ‘Circling the Wagons — Sharing the Journey’<br />
For more than a century, longtime<br />
Tempe residents have gathered<br />
for an annual reunion <strong>to</strong> socialize<br />
and share memories.<br />
On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Tempe Old<br />
Settlers Association will hold its 104th<br />

hiking boots, sandals or dress shoes)<br />
• paper, cardboard and other<br />
recyclables<br />
All items need <strong>to</strong> be clean and<br />
sanitary, and will be recycled, reused or<br />
disposed in an environmentally safe<br />
manner.<br />

is requested for Tempe Community<br />
Action Agency’s food pantry.<br />
Each person who participates will<br />
receive a free reusable lunch bag.<br />
Participants must show proof of Tempe<br />
residency, such as a driver’s license or<br />
