Wrangler News • Feb. 5 - 18, 2011 • Page 9Popcorn, Milk Duds and your Favorite SqueezeMark Moorhead’s ‘Best of’ listing of all-time romantic film classicsBy M.V. MoorheadFlowers wilt. Candy endangers the waistline.Jewelry endangers the credit card. But a goodromantic movie can make for a world-classValentine’s Day.Choosing the right Valentine’s movie is an art, however. Every taste must be taken into account, ofcourse, but so must the danger of over-familiarity.Few would question that, say, Casablanca or TheShop Around the Corner or West Side Story or KingKong or Moonstruck or Room With a View or AnOfficer and a Gentleman are fine love stories, butsuch obvious choices may land with a thud. Here area few choices that may set the heart aflutter:French Kiss (1995)—Meg Ryan, as an uptightAmerican expat in Canada, pursues her strayingfiancé Timothy Hutton to Paris, gets stranded, andfalls in with scruffy, shady Frenchman Kevin Kline.Guess what happens? This wry, mature comedy, hinging on Ryan’s best performance and one ofKline’s, may be the most underappreciated movieromance of the last two decades.Roxanne (1987)—Steve Martin wears the bigschnoz in this 20 th -Century American version of theCyrano myth. Daryl Hannah is the glorious titlecharacter, and Rick Rossovitch is the unworthy clodto whom Martin feeds silver-tongued eloquence.Martin also scripted this delightful small-towncomedy.Pride & Prejudice (2005)—Deftly directed by JoeWright, this version of Jane Austen’s masterpiece hasspeed and informality and lush visual beauty, and it’sfull of eccentric, genuinely funny performances, byKeira Knightley as Lizzie and touching, sad-facedMatthew Mcfadyen as her Darcy, but also by BrendaBlethyn and Donald Sutherland as her parents, JudyDench as Darcy’s disapproving aunt, and TomHollander as the excruciating Mr.Collins, among many others. Ang Lee’ssuperb 1995 version of Sense andSensibility is a fine choice too, if youand your sweetie are in an Austen sortof mood. The Goodbye Girl (1977)—Richard Dreyfuss won his Best ActorOscar for his performance in the NeilSimon comedy. Marsha Mason plays the titlecharacter, a former dancer and single mother who’sforced to share her Manhattan apartment withcharming-if-hyper actor Dreyfuss. She’s recently beendumped by another actor, so Dreyfuss is swimmingupstream in his efforts to win her heart. With QuinnCummings as her daughter, with whom Dreyfussbonds, and Paul Benedict, hilarious as an addlebrainedShakespearean director.Same Time, Next Year (1978)— Meeting once ayear for a quarter-century at a cottage on the Pacificcoast, a man and a woman, both married, catch eachother up on their lives before spending the nighttogether. Bernard Slade’s theatrical conceit about thisimprobably tidy annual adultery is made convincing, trendy ‘70s dialogue and all, but the heartfelt work ofits cast of two: Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn at hermost beautiful.Imagine Me & You (2005)—Piper Perabo is onher way up the aisle to marry Matthew Goode whenshe spots florist Lena Headey and they fall in love. The complications that arise from this startlingdevelopment make up the rest of this civilized, goodhearted, sometimes wistful comedy. Celia Imriestands out in the supporting cast as Perabo’s Mum.What’s Up, Doc? (1972)—Peter Bogdanovich’shomage to classic screwball comedies has become aclassic itself. Ryan O’Neal is a mild-manneredmusicologist whose world is rocked by wacky BarbaraStreisand; the two of them get caught up in anintrigue involving mixed-up identical luggage. Theterrific cast includes Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendeltonand the great Madeline Kahn, and Streisand andO’Neal sing one of the best love songs ever, “You’rethe Top,” over the end titles.Jackie Brown (1977)—I know, this is a crimemovie and it includes several murders, but I include ithere because the last thing anyone, fans or detractorsalike, expected from director Quentin Tarantino wasa mature love story.
