Financial Information Service
The Financial Information Service (FIS) is a free education and information service from
the Australian Government Department of Human Services available to everyone in
the community.
FIS can help you make informed decisions about your investment and financial issues for your
current and future financial needs. It is independent, free and confidential and provides services
through seminars, and by phone and appointment. It is important to note that FIS officers are
not financial planners; they do not give or sell advice or purchase investment products.
People making more
informed decisions
Whether you are working or retired,
increased financial knowledge will help
you make informed decisions to achieve
your financial goals. In both seminars and
personal interviews, FIS officers can provide
information to help you maintain and
improve your standard of living by:
• providing you with expert financial
information
• increasing your confidence with
financial issues
• helping you to understand your own
financial affairs and the options available
• helping you to understand different
financial products and the risks of each
• introducing you to the roles of
the different professionals in the
financial industry
• encouraging you to better manage
personal debt and credit
• helping you to maximise your
retirement income.
How FIS can help you
FIS officers can provide information on
a wide range of issues including:
• managing your money and investing safely
• shares, property and managed investments
• superannuation and income streams
• planning your retirement and choosing
a financial planner
• Age Pension and working beyond age
pension age
• receiving compensation payouts or
an inheritance
• separation, divorce, or death of your partner
• aged care, and accommodation choices
for older people.
“In both seminars and personal
interviews, FIS officers can provide
information to help you maintain and
improve your standard of living.”
