Tour Three Historic
Grosse Pointe Churches
The Grosse Pointe Historical Society will once again
conduct a tour of three historic Grosse Pointe
churches on Saturday, April 19, at 9:00 a.m:
Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, St. Clare of
Montefalco Roman Catholic Church and St.
Ambrose Roman Catholic Church.
Traveling by bus, guests will first visit Grosse Pointe
Memorial Church. Although the current worship
spaces were built in 1925, the influence of this
community faith spans more than 140 years. Learn
Tour Three Historic Grosse Pointe Churches
continued from front page
more about the Little Ivy Church, the current church architecture and history of this dynamic community.
Next visit St. Clare of Montefalco Roman Catholic Church. Since 1926 the Order of St. Augustine has been responsible
for the spiritual life of this parish community. The present building, dedicated in 1952, replaced the 1927 church. The
architecture, stained glass and carvings tell the story of their faith and history. Major renovations in the church building
were completed in 2000.
The tour’s final stop is St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church established in 1916 as a Catholic parish community. The
first church was wood frame, designed by Donaldson and Meier in 1917. Ten years later, the current Norman Gothic
style building was built and dedicated. The design earned critical acclaim in American Architecture Magazine for its
attention to detail. Detroit Stained Glass Company fabricated the Arts and Crafts style windows.
Lunch will be served in St. Ambrose’s gathering space, The Ark.
The tours will be led by local historians and church docents. The tour leaves the Grosse Pointe Historical Society
Provencal-Weir House, 376 Kercheval, at 9:15 a.m. (please arrive by 9:00 a.m.) and returns at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $25
for Society members, $30 for non-members and includes bus transportation to the churches and lunch.
For more information or to make reservations, please call 884-7010.
The Past for the Future: A Simple Way
to Give a Legacy Gift to the Society
“I give, devise, and bequeath the sum of $____________
(or _______% percent) of my net estate, as
finally determined for estate tax purposes,
to the Grosse Pointe Historical Society (GPHS),
a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located in
Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, to be used in
furtherance of its charitable purposes.”
We are indebted to our donors who have included the
Grosse Pointe Historical Society in their wills or
trusts. Insurance policies, IRAs, or annuities are an
easy way to leave money to the Society. If you would
like to leave a restricted gift or would like to discuss
other gift planning ideas, please call (313) 884-7010.
Catherine and Jimmy Fennessey, dressed as 19th
century schoolchildren, helped out at the Provencal-Weir
house in December. The house was part of the Grosse
Pointe South Mothers’ Club Holiday Walk tour of homes.
Hundreds of visitors from the Pointes and beyond
explored the house, learning of its legacy and the history
of this community.
committee member, Valerie Dodenhoff.
Since 1986, the Grosse Pointe Historical Society has been
annually awarding historic plaques to Grosse Pointe landmarks.
These plaques recognize historical or architectural
value to the community, encourage their continued
preservations, and recognize the value of adaptive reuse.
On May 13, the Society will hold a special ceremony that
will honor the more than 60 homes and buildings that
have received commemorative plaques. The plaque winners,
members of the Society and the community are
invited to attend the program beginning at 7:00 p.m. and
followed by a wine and cheese reception at the Grosse
Pointe War Memorial.
Former plaque recipients will be acknowledged. Photos
and information on all the recipients will be on display.
Four new recipients will be honored for adaptive reuse,
restoration, and maintaining the historically significant
structures. Outgoing Historical Society trustees will be
recognized that evening, as will be new trustees, and
outstanding volunteers.
“The event will be a great opportunity to share the historic
legacy of your home and learn a little more about
local history,” said Peggy Woodhouse, Historic Homes
Plaque Chair.
“We wanted to thank our membership, and get to know
other historically-minded members of the community,”
said board president Stuart Grigg. “It will be an evening
to celebrate some extraordinary structures and extraordinary
people.”
A Windmill Pointe Story
The archives at the Grosse Pointe Historical Society are filled with intriguing information about our community. The
following is an excerpt from the Grosse Pointe Guide written by the WPA about 1935. The complete text is available
in the Alfred B. and Ruth S. Moran Resource Center. We invite you to visit our Web site, www.gphistorical.org. You
never know what you’ll discover!
July 25th, 1810: There were on the premises a dwelling house, barn, stables and a windmill. About 20 acres were
under cultivation and enclosed. This private claim is now part of the Windmill
Pointe Subdivision in the Village of Grosse Pointe Park. The windmill built of stone
was erected on the lake shore near the foot of what is now Lakepointe Avenue, by
one of the first French settlers in Grosse Pointe, and was used as a grist mill, propelled
by the wind to grind the corn and wheat of the colonists. It was doubtless a
crude affair but performed the work more satisfactorily than had been done before
that time, when only hand work was employed.
In the early days of the mill’s activities, it is said, the farmers and the Indians who
resided in Canada crossed the lake in small boats bringing their grain to the mill
for grinding. This was due to lack of grist mills on the Canadian border.
This old mill is said to have been built about 1750, and was in operation until
about the year 1800. Efforts by historians to definitely fix the date and name of the
builder have not been successful. Old French records show this mill, together with
a house and barn, to have been situated on this land and as early as 1759. It was
occupied by Jean Baptiste Leduc who might be considered the original owner as
well as the builder of the mill. There are no records to show that Leduc built this
old mill but, in the absence of any proof to the contrary, we are willing to believe
Leduc is the original builder of the first mill on Windmill Pointe.
On the lake shore of this private claim is now located the village waterfront park
and many beautiful homes. The home of R.W. Judson at 15324 Windmill Pointe
Drive now occupies the site upon which stood this historical windmill. Nothing
remains of this old mill, house and barn, but as a reminder of the past there still
remains two very large French Pear trees standing as sentinels over this old landmark.
Historical Note: The remaining millstone from this windmill is now located in the Trial Gardens at the Grosse Pointe
War Memorial.
