President’s Message
It’s shaping up to be a beautiful summer in Boston
this year with sunny days and warm breezes. It has
been great weather for our track events so far this
year. We can only hope that it continues for the rest of
the season. The Driving Committee has been busy with
new features for several events. The Autocross crew
has also gotten off to a good start this year, and so have
the Track Rats at the renamed New Hampshire Motor
Speedway.
It is interesting that the track dropped International
from the name (although I don’t think anyone ever
knew what it meant). I think that the word was supposed
to lend an air of prestige to its name. Look at
all of the small airports that add international to raise
their image. In this case the new owners are putting
a lot of effort into the facility with new signage and
a new entry to the track. I expect other significant
improvements over the next year as they get their
plans implemented. Along with fancy improvements,
we’ve seen higher prices for food and special services.
Bottled water uses beware — the price went from $1
to $3. Aside from the changes I’ve noted, So far we
haven’t seen any impact to our events, but we are
keeping our radar warmed up to catch any early signs
of trouble.
The Driving Committee has implemented some
changes to track events to get more people involved
and improve the types of activities offered. Our last
event sold out for the Sunday date and we had a
continued influx of new drivers. If you haven’t read
about our Driving School Sampler that provides
members a chance to experience track driving with
a trained driver, check out the details on the chapter
website at www.boston-bmwcca.com. We expect to
see some additional offerings, so check updates on
the website regularly. The options put in place by the
club appear to be encouraging new participation. One
benefit of that is the opportunity to see new people
and cars on the track. Recently we had our first new
E92 M3 on the track at NHMS along with a 135. It was
great to see the new models on the track.
BMW continues to do well in F1 this year since
their first win as a constructer (see Christo’s article on
page 8 for a first hand account). They didn’t do well
by John Oglesby
at the next event in France due to some poor choices,
but made up for it in England where “Quick Nick”
finished second. Robert Kubica was in third for what
looked to be another great finish, but spun off in the
rain. Overall, it continues to be a great year for BMW
in the top tier of motor sport.
Outside of the race track, we have several great
events coming up in the summer. I highly recommend
our visit to KTR Motorsports as well as our general
meetings. The other event I can’t recommend highly
enough is our annual trip to Canada for our Mont
Tremblant Driving School. It is a great opportunity
to experience a wonderful venue with a unique culture
that is only a few hours away. It is an event that
shouldn’t be missed. I hope to see you there. Until
next month, stay on track! ♦
Tales from the Creeper
Changing front brake pads
Begin by jacking up the car and safely supporting
it on jack stands before removing the front wheels.
Using a set of calipers, you’ll want to measure the
thickness of the brake rotor and compare it to the
minimum thickness stamped either on the center hub
or along the circumference. If you’re close to or below
the minimum, you’ll want to replace the rotor.
Begin disassembly by first removing the springlike
clip, that holds the outside of the caliper tightly
against the caliper bracket, using a screwdriver.
Next, remove the two sliding pins (hidden under
plastic dust caps) using a hex socket. With a little
rocking the caliper can now be removed from the
rotor (Figure 1). The outer pad on an E36 can be lifted
out at this point. It’s good to have an old metal coat
hanger or similar available to hang the caliper from
the strut, as you don’t want it to hang it by the rubber
brake line. (Note: Don’t hit the brake pedal with
a caliper removed or the piston will pop out, spilling
brake fluid everywhere.)
Assuming you need to replace the rotor, the next
step is to remove the two caliper bracket-to-hub
mounting bolts (Figure 2). These are usually on there
quite tight, requiring a ½” breaker bar or ratchet to
remove. Finally, while supporting the rotor with one
hand, remove the small hex bolt holding the rotor
Counter clockwise from left top:
by Colin S. Whelan
This month we’re going back to the basics of changing the front brake pads and
rotors on an E36. Most people don’t realize the relative mechanical simplicity
of this maintenance procedure. Remember: attempt these procedures and utilize
this information at your own risk.
Figure 1
Figure 1: Brake caliper removed on an E36, leaving outer pad,
bracket and rotor.
Figure 2: Caliper bracket removed. Caliper hanging safely by
metal hanger.
Figure 3: Brake rotor removed, exposing the hub and mounts
Figure 4: Pushing the piston back into its bore to make room
for the new pads.
Figure 2 Figure 3 Figure 4
to the hub. Sometimes this bolt can be tough to
remove and is easily stripped. I’ve always had
success using an impact driver, which is a cheap
$20 tool available at your local auto parts store. It
works by converting the impact of a hammer blow
into a small twisting motion, and is a valuable
tool for your collection. If you’re lucky, the rotor
will come right off the hub, otherwise you’ll need
to resort to using a dead-blow hammer to get the
job done.
To prevent this from happening again, it’s best
to use a wire brush to clean the hub (Figure 3)
of any rust or corrosion and apply a thin coat of
anti-seize. Before placing the rotor on the hub
and securing it with the hex bolt, you’ll want to
thoroughly clean the friction surfaces of any oil/
coatings using “brake clean” solvents. (Tip: If the
rotor is directional, make sure you place the correct
rotor on its respective side of the car. This can
be done by matching BMW parts numbers or by
examining the cooling vanes along the circumference.
When attached to the hub and viewed from
above, the vanes/channels should be bending
back towards the rear of the car as they extend
from the center hub to the edge of the rotor.)
With the new rotor and caliper bracket back in
place, let’s turn our attention the caliper and pads.
The first step is to remove the pad wear sensor
wire from the inner pad, if so equipped, using
a pair of pliers. Next, the inner pad can simply
be lifted out. Make note of both pads’ orientation
before removal so that you can put the new
ones in the same way. Using a C-clamp tool to
push the piston back into its bore (Figure 4). You
might need to remove some brake fluid from the
reservoir to prevent it from overflowing. (A garage-only
turkey baster works well. Remember,
the old fluid should be recycled.)
Before installing the new pads there are two
things that are often overlooked. First, you might
consider lightly coating the backside (metal side,
not friction side) of the pad with an anti-squeal
coating and secondly, lubricating the metal-tometal
contact points between the caliper, bracket
and pad.
This is also a great time to re-lubricate the metal
pins that hold the floating caliper in place. You’ll
want to make sure that this is a high temperature
lubricant capable of withstanding the somewhat extreme
temperatures found in braking systems. You can
pick this up at your local auto parts store, but I happen
to like Pastelub and Ceramilub dry-film lubricants that
I found at www.GWRauto.com.
With the inner pad back on the caliper and the outer
pad back on the bracket, simply slide the caliper back
in place, tighten the sliding pins and replace the plastic
covers. Now reattach the spring clip. This is a good
time to double check that everything is torqued to spec,
including the wheels. With everything reassembled and
the car back on the ground, make sure you pump the
brake pedal until it is stiff, since this will push the pistons
tightly against the new pads and rotors. I always
like to try the brakes a few times before moving the car
more than a couple of inches to make sure everything
is well.
Now follow your pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure
to insure proper brake-in of the new pads. ♦
The Next Apex
BMW wins its first Formula 1 Race!
BMW has been the best surprise of the past two years
and the team that everyone is talking about. The team
has been dicing it up with the leading teams since the
beginning of the season and a few F1 insiders were expecting
that given the right circumstances, BMW would win its first
race as a constructor this year (it has already won 19 races as
an engine supplier). It took some help from McLaren’s Lewis
Hamilton who ran into the back of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen,
effectively taking two of the top contenders out of the race.
by Christo Tinkov
BMW has done it! In only its third year as a constructor, BMW has won
its first Formula 1 race. I was lucky enough to be at this historic Grand Prix of
Canada and see all of the action live.
BMW’s Robert Kubica took the lead, drove magnificently
and error-free the entire race and never looked
back. Nick Heidfeld in the second BMW was on a different
fuel strategy, which helped him work his way
up to second place at the finish from ninth on the grid.
Not only did BMW win its first race, it pulled off a 1-2
on its first win!
To top it all off, Robert Kubica’s spectacular win allowed
him to take the lead in the driver points with
just over a third of the season gone. It is the first time
since Jacques Villeneuve in 1997 that a driver from a
team other than McLaren, Ferrari or Renault leads the
points standings. That is a special moment for an upand-coming
team! BMW is also challenging Ferrari for
the constructors’ lead as it is currently only 3 points
behind in second position. According to BMW F1 team
principal Mario Thiessen, the goal for this season was
to win a race. The team is not realistically expected to be
in a position to contend the constructors trophy. With
the main goal for 2008 achieved and 11 races remaining
on the calendar, the team can focus on developing a car
for next season, which should allow them to challenge
for the win in every race.
What I find most impressive about BMW’s progress
as a Formula 1 constructor for the past 3 years is the
thoughtful and disciplined approach to building the
team and the rate at which the team has introduced
and absorbed new technologies. Every one of the manufacturer
teams in F1 has a wind tunnel and powerful
supercomputers but not every team has been able to
put these to good use. Toyota, for example, has been
pouring vast sums of money into F1 for years and does
not have much to show for it. Honda moved from a
backmarker team last year to a midpack team. After
winning the driver’s trophy two years in a row, Renault
has been running midpack as well. BMW’s steady progress
has been absolutely free of drama and setbacks.
Even though the speed of BMW’s F1 cars is still lacking
a couple of tenths per lap compared to Ferrari and
McLaren, BMW is now considered a top team. There is
much more that goes into a team than the raw speed of
its cars - it’s also the cars’ reliability and consistency,
the people in charge of the strategy, the crew chiefs
reacting to changing situations during a race, the pit
crew, which can make or break a race, and the management,
which motivates the drivers and protects them
from overexposure from PR activities.
Together with Monaco and Melbourne, the Montreal
Grand Prix is considered one of the top 3 events on
the F1 calendar. It invariably delivers a dramatic race
and 2008 was no exception. The track is within walking
distance from the downtown area, while the paddock
that backs onto the Olympic rowing basin is one of the
most relaxed and intimate of the season, and Montreal
itself is a great city to visit. This year, the race was extra
special for BMW fans and I am sure many club members
who watched the race popped a new bottle open to
toast BMW and Robert Kubica’s first win in F1. I know
I will be saving the can of beer that I toasted the win
with in a prime spot on my garage shelves for generations
to come. ♦
Warning: Racing wheels not necessarily for street use
Mark Steven Schnoerr, sent the following personal
story to the Boston Bimmer to help other
club members prevent costly, dangerous wheel
damage. Mark is the owner of a 1996 M3 and a
1974 914 2.0. Thanks Mark for the heads-up!
To all who enjoy High Performance Driving School
with track tires and / or have made their cars better
with lightweight race wheels:
I have heard of some wheel failures on some exotic,
expensive and lightweight race wheels and have checking
my wheels while I clean them thoroughly after DE
events. I never expected to have a failure.
I made the mistake of driving the M3 to and from
NHMS last week to heat cycle some new Nitto NT-01
tires and save myself from changing them at the site.
On the way home I drove over the part of I-495 Southbound
where they are stripping and re-paving, South
of Mass Pike. There was one “bump” from the stripped
area to a bridge that did not have the leading edge asphalt
ramp built to it at all. The car did not deal well
with a 2 inch step at 70 mph. I had no idea how much
damage had been done until I got home a few minutes
later.
One of my rear tires was very low on air and on the
other side of the car I had broken one of the 6 spokes!
This is a 16.8 pound, 17 X 8.5 wheel, 40mm backspacing,
with a 5 x 120 bolt pattern with 255/40 x 17 tires. I
ordered a replacement wheel and had the tire remounted
at a local race shop. When I picked it up, they asked
if I had driven these lightweight track wheels on the
street since they have never had this brand fail on any
of their race cars. They also showed me hairline cracks
in 3 of the remaining 5 spokes before suggesting I do a
thorough look at the rest of the wheels.
At home, I rolled the others out of the garage and
found hairline cracks in at least one spoke on 3 more
wheels. Replacements have already been ordered.
So be careful driving your race wheels on the street
and thoroughly inspect them at tech, every time you
put them on, take them off, and between run groups
and especially if you ever go off track at an event. ♦
My good friend Joe Rich
. . . and my path to joining Boston BMW CCA
by LARRY BARBIERI, Membership Chair
There’s hardly a day that goes by when I don’t ask myself, “How did I get
here?” I suppose I should define where “here” is. “Here” is being a BMW car
nut (just ask any of my friends! ). “Here” is also being an active member of
the Boston Chapter, a member of the board of directors, a driving school registrar
and a driving instructor at the Chapter’s High Performance Driving Schools.
Over the past few months, I come to realize that I can
probably trace being “here” to one person and one
event in my life. The person is my friend and former
neighbor, Joe Rich and the event was, when I tried to
buy his 1995 M3 from him. But, we have
to back up a bit. Joe used to live across
the street from me. When I first met him
he owned an early silver, E36, 325i. At
the time, to me it was just a silver BMW.
Then one day Joe came home with a
brand, spanking new, 1995, Hellrot M3.
Again, at the time I didn’t know the difference
between an M3 and an M&M!
During those early years my wife and
I became close friends with Joe and his
wife. I found out that Joe was a car guy.
He liked BMWs, but he liked Porsches
too. He was knowledgeable on many aspects
of both. In fact, I found out that Joe
was knowledgeable about many aspects
of just about everything!
Joe and his wife,
Beth ran their own
company and it was
quite successful. Eventually,
they moved a
few miles away to a
larger house, but we
still saw them frequently.
Each year,
Joe and Beth would
host a party just before
Christmas. It was
a lavish event thrown
for their employees as
a sort of end of year
“thank you”. There
were always a few
My good friend
Joe Rich
friends and neighbors invited too. This was just one
of the many generous things Joe did. I could easily fill
several pages with a list of the others.
In 2002 Joe’s long time desire for a Porsche came
to fruition when he purchased a new 911
Cabrio. He sold the M3 to his brother-inlaw,
Brad.
The next year I was in the market for a
new car. I had finally decided that maybe a
BMW would suit me. I had been unhappy
with the two offerings I had from Nissan.
I wanted something better!
Around this same time I discovered
Brad was relocating to Colorado and I
wondered if he would be willing to sell
the car to me and not have to transport it.
I phoned Joe to ask and he told me that,
Joe Rich’s 1995 Hellrot M3
indeed the car would NOT be making the
trip to Colorado … but this was because
Joe had bought it back. As he put it, “I
had such a soft spot for that car. I really
love it. ”Despite my
begging for him to
sell it to me, he graciously
declined,
but informed me
that there were
plenty of them out
there and I should
have no trouble
finding one.
Now I had the
bug. I was so close
to an M3 I could
taste it. Oh yeah,
by this time I had
educated myself on
the M3 and the E36
chassis and the differences between models and . . .
well you get the picture. At that point, the search was
on!
Soon after that I found my white E36, 1995
M3 and joined the BMW car club. As I got
more involved in the club’s activities, Joe
would say to me, “I have no doubt you’ll
be running that club one day! ”Well, I
don’t know about that, but I’m certainly
trying to do my share.
So for me, it was my friend Joe that put
the bug in me about BMWs and started me on
this journey.
This coming year’s driving season was going to be
a great one! Joe had decided to use the M3 for some
track events. He had been to other tracks before and
had some driving experience. He wanted to get the M3
setup a bit better than stock. He asked me what to do
and I was only too happy to pour out my new found
knowledge and suggestions. Eventually, he took the
car to Turner Motorsport where they made modifications
to get him ready for the track.
I was excited, because he was going to come to a
Boston BMW CCA event this year, and I would get to
be his instructor! What a great way to give something
back to him for all that he had given to me.
Sadly, on December 28, 2007, only one week after the
annual Christmas celebration, Joe was taken from us,
suddenly and unexpectedly. He is and always will be
missed. I hardly ever get into my BMW without
thinking of his influence on me and now I
will always think of it. On the many occasions
that we spent with Joe, as the
evening wound down and guests began
to put on their coats and bid their farewells
Joe would never say good-bye. He
always extended his hand to shake yours
and uttered a single word …”Peace”.
If you want to know more about what kind of guy
Joe was, just come find me at the race track. I’ll be driving
the white, E36, 1995 M3 with Joe’s initials on the
back, JRR. Peace ♦
July 2008 Update:
On June 24, 2008 Larry acquired Joe's red 1995 M3.
He reports that “This car has very special meaning
for me. While in my care, it will be driven the way
Joe intended — on the race track.” Look for Larry
and Joe’s Red E36, 1995 M3 at the race track . It
will be the one with Joe's initials on the back.
Postcards from a Racing Road Trip
Part 1 The Glen
Story and photos by Jason Walker
I’ve always been an all or nothing kind of guy. For two years I had been part of a critical
project at work; so I was giving all of myself to work and almost none of myself to anything
else. This is how I ended up with over a month of vacation time and a genuine need
to get away. My girlfriend and I were discussing my plans for the USGP, which I try to attend
every year and I had also been thinking about attending some Skip Barber races as a
spectator, just to hang out at the track. All at once an itinerary spilled out of my mouth as
I was joking about going from one track to another and having a “racin’ vacation.” I hadn’t
been serious when I said it but over the course of the next week I started thinking why not?
I got in touch with my friend Rob Slonaker whom
I had met over 15 years ago when I was a Skip Barber
Racing School mechanic at Sears Point Raceway in
Sonoma, CA. Rob and I worked at a couple of other
racing teams together and have stayed in touch ever
since. Rob now operates a business called Slip Angle
Consulting that is dedicated to helping people have fun
with cars and driving, which includes coaching and instructing
his clients that race with Skip Barber. I knew
that if anyone could guide me towards some racing fun,
Rob could. After a few calls and e-mails I suddenly had
an itinerary: Watkins Glen, NY to Louisville, KY to Indianapolis
to Kansas City to Chicago to Elkhart Lake,
WI to Boston, MA
The Glen
Experiencing Watkins Glen was like sitting around the
campfire with the tribal elders of racing. There was so
much history surrounding me that it seemed like every
single detail was a jewel waiting to be discovered. On
my way to and from the track the country roads had
signs that marked the old racing circuit. There was a
roadside marker for a fallen racer, which reminded me
that the farmland I was driving through was as much
a part of the experience as the purpose built facility
down the road.
I stayed at the Seneca Lodge, which MHP described
as “camping with a door;” but he meant it in a good
way. MHP is a classic gentleman racer. His appearance
is that of the quintessential Connecticut preppy guy, but
he is so genuine, knowledgeable and experienced that
it is either the ultimate contrast or the ultimate complement
to his appearance (depending on what comes to
mind when you think “preppy”). Like Rob, MHP has
been an instructor with Skip Barber for 16 years and has
turned thousands of laps at tracks all over the U.S. Before
all of that they both raced in Europe. Career racers
like MHP and Rob make you truly understand the value
of a driving coach because they can tell you the specific
details of why something works or doesn’t work on a
specific track, on a specific day. It’s one thing to know
the fundamentals of racing but it’s something entirely
different to know that if you move your racing line a
foot to the left or right in some turn, there’s a bump in
the road that will catch the car and it will allow you to
keep your foot in it just a moment longer.
The Lodge
The Seneca Lodge bar was like a museum of stickers,
signatures and memorabilia related to motorsports.
There were bits of history from Formula 1, CART,
Champ Car, IRL, NASCAR, SCCA, WKF and even an
arrow that rocker Ted Nugent himself shot into the wall
(they do a lot of hunting there too). The rooms at the
Seneca Lodge were clean, but they were dated enough
to have wrapped back around the clock
into retro. My favorite part of the accommodations
was that most of the
cabin doors opened up to a porch that
was shared with all of the neighbors.
Most nights we would fire up a grill
and cook something fresh for dinner,
share some wine and tell some stories.
These evenings with these characters
and the wood chips smoldering in
the grill were among the best moments
of my trip.
Another great thing about the
Seneca Lodge was that it is imme-
diately across the street from Watkins Glen State
Park, which provided the setting for one of the
most beautiful walks I’ve ever been on, with waterfalls,
a gorge and nature at its best.
In downtown Watkins Glen, there were reminders
everywhere of how important racing is to this
community. There were historical markers indicating
which parts of Franklin Street used to be part
of the racing circuit. I couldn’t help but imagine
what it must have been like to watch this small,
rural American town turn into Monaco when F1
or CART came to town. At the same time Watkins
Glen is a lake community, a hub for farmers and
has a thriving wine economy. There’s something
about the balance of Watkins Glen that, for me,
made it all the more attractive. I loved the idea
that racing is something that adds character to a
great community. There are towns in this country
that are renowned for their race track and one or
two major events that are held there; and if you
visit those towns when there isn’t a race going on,
it’s like attending a stranger’s wake. Watkins Glen
on the other hand felt like a place that I would
enjoy even without a race to attend.
The racing was great. Unfortunately for the Skip
Barber mechanics the ARMCO at Watkins Glen
was like a magnet for racers in training; and by the
end of the weekend it seemed like more cars got
loaded with a hook than with ramps. But the men
and women that turn the wrenches did an incredible
job of rebuilding cars that had their corners
torn off. It was intoxicating and comforting to be
back in the pit lane with the cars, but it was the
people that really made it great.
I met a lot of wonderful people at the Glen,
but two standout characters were “The Griest
Brothers,” a father and son racing team that did
extremely well that weekend. Revere Griest took
home two wins and his father Dr. John Griest took
home a 1st and a 2nd. Each of these two BMWCCA
members went on to win their respective Regional
Championships in 2007. For 2008 John and Revere
have moved into a pair of Formula Continental
cars and their progress so far is equally impressive.
Stay tuned for the next destination: Indianapolis
for the United States Grand Prix which was a
journey full of surprises. ♦
