In oil drill<strong>in</strong>g operations, mud pumps<br />

force the drill<strong>in</strong>g fluid down the drill<br />

str<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> back up the well bore.<br />

Up to now conventional three<br />

cyl<strong>in</strong>der piston pumps (Triplex) have<br />

traditionally been used. Because of<br />

their size, weight <strong>and</strong> pressure<br />

pulsations a new pump has been<br />

developed, to improve drill<strong>in</strong>g rig<br />

capabilities <strong>and</strong> economics.<br />

The Hex Pump, a jo<strong>in</strong>t development<br />

project of National Oilwell Varco <strong>and</strong><br />

the Schaeffler Group, is a true<br />

technical highlight.<br />

The Hex 240 Pump (National Oilwell<br />

Varco patent) is designed to h<strong>and</strong>le<br />

variable pressure <strong>and</strong> volume flows.<br />

Like the old pumps, it utilises axial<br />

pistons, but <strong>in</strong>stead of a swashplate<br />

it has an asymmetric cam.<br />

Significant advantages over triplex<br />

mud pumps are:<br />

• 30% smaller<br />

• 30% lower weight<br />

• greater pump<strong>in</strong>g capacity<br />

• steady flow (no pressure<br />

pulsations)<br />

In Nov 2000, the first contact was<br />

established between National<br />

Oilwell Varco <strong>and</strong> <strong>INA</strong> (l<strong>in</strong>ear<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>gs), as well as <strong>FAG</strong> (roll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>gs).<br />

In May 2001, the first prototype<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>gs were ordered.<br />

In 2004, the first series of bear<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

was produced.<br />

<strong>INA</strong>/<strong>FAG</strong> supply all the bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

components for the Hex 240 Pump.<br />

Cam<br />

The cam, which rotates at a max. speed of 212 m<strong>in</strong> –1 ,<br />

is the heart of the pump. Thanks to its special profile,<br />

the cam produces a unique steady state flow, which<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imizes pressure variations. The cam of special cast<br />

steel is manufactured on a mach<strong>in</strong>e with a multi-axis<br />

control system. It has a special heat treat runn<strong>in</strong>g area<br />

to withst<strong>and</strong> the considerable cycl<strong>in</strong>g stress <strong>and</strong> to<br />

protect aga<strong>in</strong>st surface wear.<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g arrangement<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong>ly axial forces are taken up at the upper position<br />

by a tapered roller thrust bear<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Radial guidance is provided by a cyl<strong>in</strong>drical roller<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

An angular contact thrust ball bear<strong>in</strong>g serves as the<br />

counteract<strong>in</strong>g bear<strong>in</strong>g. To prevent slippage, the bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is preloaded by means of spr<strong>in</strong>gs via a thrust collar.<br />

For easier h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> mount<strong>in</strong>g, all large bear<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

are fitted with non separable cage assemblies <strong>and</strong><br />

have threaded holes for eyebolts.<br />

Cam rollers<br />

The cam rollers are mounted <strong>in</strong> a clevis. They translate<br />

the motion of the rotat<strong>in</strong>g asymmetric cam <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ear motion of the pump<strong>in</strong>g cyl<strong>in</strong>ders. The outer r<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of the cam rollers has an optimized cross profile which<br />

prevents edge stress<strong>in</strong>g. The cage is designed especially<br />

to withst<strong>and</strong> high radial accelerations.<br />

The forces are taken up by a preloaded, premounted<br />

tapered roller bear<strong>in</strong>g unit (patent pend<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

P<strong>in</strong>ion shaft bear<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

The p<strong>in</strong>ion shaft is supported <strong>in</strong> two cyl<strong>in</strong>drical roller<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>gs which take up the radial forces, <strong>and</strong> one four<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t bear<strong>in</strong>g which takes up only the axial forces. All<br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g bear<strong>in</strong>gs are lubricated by an oil circulat<strong>in</strong>g system.<br />

They guide the clevis <strong>and</strong> the track roller. Robust roller<br />

type profiled rail units easily take up the forces <strong>and</strong><br />

high accelerations. Perpendicular guides compensate<br />

thermal expansions. The bear<strong>in</strong>gs are lubricated by<br />

splash oil.<br />

All roll<strong>in</strong>g bear<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ear guides were designed<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g the bear<strong>in</strong>g calculation program BEARINX ® .<br />

<strong>Roll<strong>in</strong>g</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g monitor<strong>in</strong>g –<br />

<strong>FAG</strong> Industrial Services<br />

The F’IS onl<strong>in</strong>e monitor<strong>in</strong>g system measures <strong>and</strong> automatically<br />

analyses the vibrations of the Hex Pump. In<br />

this way, any irregularities <strong>in</strong> pump operation, any<br />

damage or defect can be detected at an early stage .<br />

If an alarm is triggered , the data are automatically<br />

sent via satellite l<strong>in</strong>k to a remote diagnosis center<br />

where F’IS experts will make a detailed analysis.<br />
